HOW TO MAKE AND USE A FULLY ADJUSTABLE CARRIAGE STOP FOR THE MYFORD ML7 LATHE

Жыл бұрынIn this video I describe what you need to know about making a fully adjustable carriage stop for the Myford ML7. I show what material is needed, how to keep costs and machining time down. I also show the measurements I used and important details to get the carriage stop to lock up nicely. Plus at the end I show a simple method to be able to machine an exact length of cut and how to use the power feed safely when using a dead stop. a dead stop.

That's a nice stop, nicer than the one I made :) In case you're interested it's o1 tool steel, o for oil-hardening similarly w1 and a2 for water and air hardening!

MATERIALS NEEDED TO MAKE THIS CARRIAGE STOP. A Length of 20mm Wide x 6mm Thick Annealed 01 Tool Steel. A Length of 20mm Wide x 12mm Thick Bright Mild Steel Bar. A length of 20mm Wide x 1/2'' Inch Bright Mild Steel Bar. A Length of 8mm Stainless Steel Threaded Studding. A 6mm Nut, Bolt and two washers Some Small Steel Screws To Hold It All Together.( I used 4BA). (All Of These are usually available on eBay).

A great video Steve. Lots of detail on how this excellent tool was made. I made a carriage stop about three years ago. My one was a very simple design though. I wonder if I should do a video on it some time. Thanks for sharing the build. Cheers Nobby

With the stop set anyone new to marching could put the cut on at the stop then traverse out towards tailstock.

I wonder how difficult it would be to add an additional plate on the half-nut lever, protruding upward, so that the carriage stop would move into it and automatically raise the half-nut lever to stop the feed-screw advance before it reaches the final mark.

Just an observation... could you not put the locking bolt in the other way up thereby dispensing with the need for a nut? The clamping piece is threaded anyway and it'd look nicer. Or would it not clamp so well? Nice knob BTW 😂

Thanks, you may be able to. I haven't tried it, though, as I like it the way it is. I also bought one on eBay a while ago, and it had the same design with the nut on the top.

I would like to have a Myford ML7 but no I am stuck with a Chinese made nothing accurate P.O.S. Mini lathe that I have dumped money into just to make it useful. Sorry for the rant. Project was super helpful, I will need to make one but a few modifications are required in order to use it.

My Myford ML7 has cost me a lot more than my Chinese Mini Lathe to put right. I even had to buy a new spindle and bearings that cost nearly £300. Also, I use my Mini Lathe for some components that would be difficult to machine on the Myford ML7. I have made a carriage stop for the Mini Lathe as well, that I hope to show soon. Regards Steve

Did you ever work for Bodgit and Scarper ?? It's a right Bodge. And where on Earth do you get, 20mm wide by 1/2" steel from ?? I've looked everywhere and I can only find Metric or Imperial, does this mixed measurement come from another planet ?? 😂😂

That is the size it needs to be. Just convert the Imperial to metric if you want. I work in both. If you can't find the exact size, you have to adjust it on a disc sander or milling machine. Regards Steve
