Watching this now as a happily married woman, I can’t believe I ever watched this believing this was romance. Big was a complete narcissist; he would give breadcrumbs when he wanted how he wanted and zoom off into the night knowing she would eat those crumbs like it was a full meal. He would double talk her just enough to keep her wondering if maybe he was “the one”. That soul mate exchange was classic narcissistic behavior. If a man says those things run for the hills; he will keep you tied up in knots your entire relationship chasing down true love.

I won't condemn Big as a villain only because he did not fulfill Carrie's every fantasy and expectation. People have a right to set their own pace. Carrie was more "in love with love" than she was with Big. Love is wanting "for" the other person. Being "In love" is merely wanting "from" them which is a selfish attitude. If he is at fault than so is she for accepting terms that did not satisfy. They were more playmates than they were soulmates. He had lots of money to indulge their trivial amusements and Carrie loved to play along. Romance is the easy part.

it wasn't big's money that carrie was neccesarily attracted to. he was a romantic, a zealous person and had the suave personality the dramatic writer in carrie needed.
