Safety warning on caps, they can hold a charge for a long time after power is disconnected so make sure you discharge the leads on a metal surface otherwise you risk a nasty shock.

Jason, I'm a 40 year retired electrical engineer. Ryan Darfler is absolutely correct. These high power caps can bite pretty hard. Shorting with a screwdriver, as Ryan mentioned, will DEFINITELY discharge them successfully. However, there will be a WICKED amount of current flowing when you do that. That MAY shorten the life of the capacitor(had it been good). Better to discharge it slowly with a 20-Watt, 1K-ohm power resistor(cheap). You can get one at @t or @t. Hold the body of the resistor with a pliers, just in case it should get hot. Thing is, you may never need to mess with another high power capacitor in your life, so this may not be worth the hassle. For your particular fix, the fact that the cap was bad PROBABLY meant the the capacitor was already drained and not dangerous. HOWEVER, let's pretend that the cap was NOT the problem(which could have been possible). THEN, it's could have been kinda like walking into a bit bull's cage, unawares.

You should invest in a digital multi meter and a good set of wire crimpers. You can test capacitors if you have a meter that reads uf or micro farads (sp). It comes in handy for A/C compressor capacitors or generator capcitors. Great video.Thanks.

Just a suggestion that every time you have to add a connection to wiring you always cut out the old connector as long as you have extra wire because every connection causes heat and voltage loss which could cause damage to the cap.

I would have installed a quick release harness (weather pack / sold on eBay, Amazon...)to make it easy to replace rather than cut every time You have to replace it. ***Any time you create a new connection along the same circuit, you gain resistance and have voltage drop. 2) nothing like a tarp to lay down. Either to keep from getting wet and 2, in case of any spills, it can be easily cleaned up. Tarps are typically inexpensive at Harbor Freight or free w a purchase of almost anything. Cardboard, I love more. I buy the xl box at Uhaul and use it when I repair something. I toss it in the recycling bin thereafter.

Whenever you were hooking the new wires up you could have cut one of the original connections and hooked it together, then cut the other one so you would know which one was which and it would have eliminated the old connectors. Its better to have less connections. I know you know what you are doing but this is just a little helpful tip. Peace, Love and Expediting my friends..

Good job for the side of the road. I have a class a diesel pusher and now way do I want to wrench on the side of the road like that. One thing I am thinking as an engineer. And you got the video to prove they put that capacitor in a bad spot originally. You figured it out too, at the end, when you made sure it did not interfere with the power packs oil filter. That capacitor mounting bracket needs to be moved in, like 2 inches. That capacitor should be supported in the middle. If you look at beginning of the video, you will see how it was set up originally. Hanging in the middle. It should not be hanging out the mount 3/4 of the way. It is mechanically unsound. The insides of the capacitor could shift and not last. That is my opinion. The thing I see, the bolt hole placing was messed up in the power pack's engineering department. I bet the electrical engineer did not know where the engine engineer (I am sure they bought a foreign engine) put the oil filter (down to the mm). He /she might have been told the length of the capacitor, wrong. I bet that whole design was made by computer (CAD). They missed it. If for some reason that capacitor had not failed and time came to change the oil, you would have figured this out totally. It was hanging way under the oil filter. If you can. I say drill the same sized hole a few inches in, towards the center of the truck (make the dealer do it). You could move the new hole a little down too. the geometry will work. I'd make sure you have all the head room for the rubber insulator cap (on the capacitor) when you are planning to move it (if you do) And near the same room for the wire. For real, that was not right. You got the video to prove this.

I’ve had to replace my capacitor 4 times over the 2 years of having my truck. I hate having to go to carrier every other month to fix the apu. I have an older carrier pc6000 with almost 17,000 hours on it. Luckily the generator hasn’t gone out blows colder AC than my truck does. If it does go out I’m getting a rig master bc it doesn’t tie into the trucks coolant system.

Hey Guys - Former car stereo installer here. The things you refer to as quick connects are actually called butt connectors. They need to be crimped with a crimper and not smooshed with some pliers. Those wires will eventually work their way out leaving you without power! I would highly recommend getting the right tool and fixing it.
