7:48 "Cars won't make you happy. But sometimes... they can put a smile on your face." That's the truest statement of hobbies I've ever heard
@twistedpixel2558
@twistedpixel2558 2 ай бұрын
For some of us, they aren't hobbies, they're a necessity. I have lived out in the country my entire life. I drive hundreds of miles a week just getting back and forth to work, taking kids around to where they need to be, getting groceries or a new washing machine, etc. We HAVE to have them. There's no uber or taxi, even if you could afford them. Even though it's a necessity, you might as well have a nice one.

ill ad to that. im in the same boat. and now at 35 years old. there's something nostalgic about having the Honda Civic with a 6 speed I would admire in high school (2006) tbh nobody gives af about what you drive. everybody is in their own world. so once you learn to appreciate what you have. its the best. I feel 18 when I get in it. its slow as dog ish but that's fine with me. it has the sounds, the smells and the clunkiness of a car of my day you won't won't get now.. I call that the difference between a "enthusiast" and actual "carguy" enthusiast want the flashy fastest whatever for insta clout. but real car guys enjoy the aspect of driving any vehicle. that's a whole other topic that's generational also lol.

Thank you for making this video. I always dreamed that I could drift. I saved up and bought a 350z and sure enough, I could actually do it. But it was kind of like meeting a hero. We began to take it more seriously. We rushed to make it to events and my car was never working right. It took the joy out of it. Someday I want to compete. But I want it to be because I’m at the track to enjoy drifting, and it just so happens to be in a competitive environment. For now I sim race. Awaiting my return behind the wheel of a real car.

mid-late 80's was doing it with a modded Datsun 620 long bed pickup, the extra 10" wheelbase made it very predictable+consistent. there's lots to be said for "keep it simple stoopit", it put up with being hammered and rarely ever broke. recommend for a fun "slideways seat time" budget build project. L20-B giving +165 whp, 4 speed from a 1600 wagon for lower closer ratios, no spare no tailgate no rear bumper no smog no AC, lots of weight stripped. late 70's Datsun was like playing with a Chevy, near anything bolts together! power sliding and "slideways" was before anyone called it drifting, hehe so what.

Kind of similar scenario. Ive always loved racing games. Bought an Altezza track car. Cost me pretty decent money. The heartbreak of trying to get things ready for track days and things going wrong, mechanical failures, accidents. Did it for 3 years and eventually sold it. Bought a direct drive setup and just sim race now. Its astonishing how close it feels to real life. Assetto Corsa feels great. The only IRL track experience im missing is Nordschliefe. Absolutely going to bring a car there.

I recently inherited my dad's car. He died from cancer 3 weeks ago and he had a 1989 Renault 12. It's by no means a sports car, but he bought it for dirt cheap after being parked in an old garage for over a decade (I'm new to car stuff, but is this considered a barn find?) He spent 4 years fixing it, making it run and even painted it. This year my dad came home extremely happy saying it passed the technical test it needs for it to be legal to drive in the streets. The car is far from perfect still and soon I'll have the paperwork so it's finally mine, and I expect to finish it up and have it like my dad wanted it :) I won't do anything crazy to it. I live in Argentina and don't have the kind of money needed for that, but I will enjoy fixing up this car with my friend and will be very happy once I'm done. My dad wanted me to have the car and sell it as a classic when enough time passed, maybe it's too common to be a classic but we'll see. I miss my dad.

This commentary really resonated with me. Over a decade ago, I used to have a huge group of friends that were collectively into the racing scene. We used to travel every month to autocross, the drag strip, car shows, and just driving up the mountain. But as the years went by; those same people acclimated to new and differing priorities that took them away from the hobby. We all slowly drifted away, until there was just now you, and your car that you dumped tens of thousands of dollars into and the group and the motivations of doing what you used to do no longer exist, because even you have changed. I used to daily my modded car until I bought a motorcycle, and even bought a new car to replace it recently. Now, it's being sold at a huge loss. But when I look back at the pictures of it; I remember the experiences I got to have, the friends that I made, and the joys of what it was to be a part of that community. That in the end, was worth the price of admission.

This has to be the most motivating video I heard. Story: I use to be all in on the car community, I hanged out with the OG Gold Rush Rally guys that you see on KZfaq, visited all the coolest car shows in FL, raced multiple cars race tracks, personally know an F1 Racing Manager, I drove nice super cars, what they are all looking for is people to be around, not to be lonely, to be with someone like them so they can finally have someone to relate to. But once the cars are gone, life and circumstances take over. You are so different and so cool, that you are lonely, i have never felt so depressed as when I made the car I drove determine me . Enjoy life, your family, and the people that care for you, don’t let social media transform and stomp your life. Take an internet fast or social media 1 month fast. That works amazing miracles. Good luck, and thanks fro reading my story :)

Cars will absolutely make you happy. The problem is unattainable or unreasonable goals, and that applies to any hobby/obsession. The problem these days is people forget what made cassic hotrodding so good, which was the concept of really good ideas anyone can do on an average budget for a hobby. My all black 2014 GT was the alternative dream car to one of my actual dream cars (either a 08/09 Bullit or a real classic Dodge Charger like my dad had), and with the red accents on the headlights, blacked out exterior, and free flow exhaust, it turns heads when other cars that cost way more are ignored. It's loud, has great power, and gives me plenty of satisfaction as I see people stop and look on the street. It's such an icon, they *know* what it is. On those merits, I'm satisfied with the car, but I don't want all bark and no bite. I have goals to expand the rear tires from 295 to 325 radials in the rear ($1250?), replace my radio that just died ($600), get an e85 tune ($150), and if I ever find a get lucky, a Tremec transmission (over $2000) and a Procharger ($5000+.) I juet want to put more expensive cars and Chevys to shame. Should be reasonable. Should I ever strike it rich, I'll buy an actual dream car like a $150,000 Cobrajet, and I can grease Teslas all day long. Until then, I will appreciate what I have and be humble.

YES! Cars can make you a bit happier, but only AFTER you've figured out how to make top dollar--and by then, the odds are pretty good you're getting older and will sacrifice everything for the biggest possible house and a couple kids you don't want because "SHE wanted it." If you haven't nailed that 100+ grand a year job yet, you can sort of just piddle around with cars. This shit is *expensive,* even if it's a 20-year old car in decent shape and all you want is to put some rims on it and maybe install a decent stereo. Your car can, and probably will, eat up more of your life than ANY physical possession has any business consuming--even a house! That's time that you could have spent pursuing a $100,000 job that you hate (like any job) and have the money to pursue a car that you actually like instead of pissing away a decade of your life fucking around with a car because you can't afford the one you really want. They're just cars. Some of them are cool cars, but they're still just cars.

Also cars, I've sunk too much cash in my build (years ago before social media were a thing) and nowadays I wouldn't even consider modifying my car beyond a chiptune and some good rubber. And I've got more money than I had before. The reason was because I thought the car was my identity before. How good the car was was indicative to how I thought people saw me. That of course was an illusion and all the trouble I did was wasted. Today I'm less insecure about my identity, My car doesn't portray who I am, not even a little bit. I still like cars, but it's so much more fun now that I can enjoy them without that selfimposed pressure. I think that's what he is trying to convey.

I worked very hard and I didn't ever once think that it would be possible for me to obtain a car that I knew I truly wanted. It doesn't have to be the best or most turned or modded. If you care that other lambos have turbos and yours doesn't, it is your problem. if you care that your car doesn't have a turbo because your car is slow without one, then that is a valid reason to care, because it's about your enjoyment and not about others. the bottom line is, do what makes you happy, not what makes others give you an internet point.

Dude, rewatching this video 2 years later after owning my dream car, this video really does stand the test of time and is very true. I own my car for me and me only. If you aren't happy before the car, you won't be happy after. There are car things I would love to get into, but they won't affect the enjoyment I have in my car whether I get to do them or not. I love this video.

Well said. I have long realized how impossible rare my opportunity is. And it makes zero sense financially or emotionally to put this much obsession into building a rotary. Thankfully my happiness comes from self growth and pushing my limits. Which is why im not the best youtuber. Im not doing the superlative build for the views. its a byproduct. im doing it for my happiness and curiosity. KZfaq second. But im so fortunate that it allows me to make a monstrosity. It is like chasing a high though. I knew the night as i was driving back from racing Ken that i would be focused on the next big thing because that race wouldnt satisfy for as long as i was dreaming about doing it to begin with. Ive made peace with chasing the devil and found a way to be happy. And a way to use my restlessness or unhappiness to be productive and push myself further.

Rob, I love your work best cause for the first time I watching all of KZfaq, your channel gives me passion for something I thought I'd lost. Cars, we do it be cause we love cars. It's not about beating the best or even being the best but being the best version of ourselves. Reaching the heights we BELIEVE we truly can reach. Taking on those hard task not because they're easy but because they're hard. Keep up the good work and fighting the good fight. Your car and ability to work on cars and learn on the fly gives me hope and passion. Be thankful for the position you're in. To try out your passion without worrying about the other. Your passion pays you. I wish I had that position. I'd be a mad scientist in the garage all the time. Its my zen. The happiness for me is seeing what I built come into fruition. Keep being great bro!

When I'm not working I'm either at my computer or out driving. What's making me even happier is to know that all of those things are paid for by myself, alone. It gives you a feeling of accomplishment. I might only be 19 years old but I work, by far, the most hours in our household (mother, stepfather, friend, me). I might not work every day sometimes but I don't have normal work hours. I'm.a truck driver. I don't stop when I'm tired. I stop when I'm done...

Yes, I agree My philosophy Is to use that desire to Always Better myself: work hard and spend time and Money on your hobby not for social media clout, not to be the Dude having the 1000+HP Supra "look at me", but to improve yourself and achieving your goals. Sure, maybe you Just wanted that car at the start and now that you have It you want It faster, appreciate what you achieved so far and don't set your standards to the ones of "big people of KZfaq" Dream big but Remember to be Happy of what you have done so far, and most importantly do It for YOURSELF, you'll never feel Happy if you think happyness Will come when people "envy" you or when they'll think you're successful, It's YOU Who Need to think YOURSELF as successful, not others

if you think about it, humans are very selfish creatures. there’s never a moment where we think “okay, I have everything I want, I’m done now”. we always want more things, better things, etc. and it comes to a point where people’s happiness becomes reliant on the next cool thing they do or buy, but the happiness is only temporary. it takes a long time to break that cycle. the only way to really be happy is when you’re happy with yourself, and you can only do that when you aren’t reliant on other people or other things. at the end of the day, the most important thing in our life is ourself (as selfish as that sounds)

I love these videos, a breathe of fresh air. Way I see it.. it’s not about the cars, it’s about your passion for them and your personal experience with them what matters, not how others experience your car.. clout chasing etc etc and whatever else, just do what makes you happy, not dictating your happiness based on approval of others (in most things in life) Yes car communities can be a good way to socialise and be a living part of community, but if the only thing you are basing your happiness on is if others like your car, then it’s probably not the way to go.

Great video this. I'm super fortunate to be able to own my dream car, an R32 GTR. Outside a couple of videos, I've made an effort to keep it off KZfaq because everyone has their own opinion on what it should/shouldn't be and they all disagree with each other. The best moments I have in the car are (as you said) when I go out for a drive with no cameras, phone on silent and just enjoy what the car means to me. Also regarding "MUST DO THE BIG BUILDS". This is kinda the reason why I've never tried to do my own content with irl cars. I know the majority of my audience doesn't care about me cleaning up an old MX5, so it stops be from doing the content that I'd like + more importantly, the car doesn't get worked on. It's a balance that I think every video creator/social media nerd struggles to get right.

One thing I've noticed after watching youtube for a while is that I enjoy watching people who look like they truly have fun doing videos. Its not something you can fake, you feel it while watching the video. But at the same time, people really won't watch things unless they're over the top or really special. Its a really thin line of balancing and its hard to keep that balance. Like super fkn hard. You have to keep things fun enough for your self but at the same time keep things fun for the people who watch. Personally I feel like the best way to keep up with youtube is to stay connected with your viewers so that they can hear what it is you enjoy. Although some people like to keep their private life/feelings to them self and put up with a persona. But that's preference for each individual. And like I said it harder to show your viewers that you're really happy. Idk man I just had to rant a bit. I feel like you are very honest and balance fun in a good way ^^ Keep doing what you're doing! I'll be rooting for you irl and ingame haha

You can blame social media and the creator culture of many who glamorize "things" over reality. Cars are hunks of metal, nothing more, they are there to enrich your life, not to define it.

Well easy to say when you have a personality haha! Some of us need cars to be defined into a genre of ownership. But in all seriousness, you're right. No one will ever be happy with what someone else own. I was fortunate enough to not care when I started and I still don't care which has been pretty great. I'm sure having driven as many vehicles as you have, its the pleasure of experience that creates the draw I suppose. I have had the opportunity to watch what having a car insta does, to the actual car and sadly its not pretty. The quest for likes, leaves decent cars looking like trash, held together by zipties, barely passing safety, all in the name of being ratty "cause its cool" or worse, photoshopping the imperfections away to create the ideal fashionista shitbox that can barely get past 4000RPM's cause it has a straight pipe. If someone cares about cars it shows but most can't tell. When folks care about their image around cars as an identity, well it shows.

This video just showed up in my feed. Thank you so much! The amount of effort put into this video reminds me of that exact point. If I could have my dream car, everything would wash away. That's just not true. It's a personal thing and cars shouldn't be the focal point at all. I'm inspired.

Let’s hope so otherwise people will be over it by 2030s. Something similar or more advanced and futuristic will surely replace social media that people will use by them. Either a holodeck like in Orville or Star Trek, or like in the movie Ready Player One or Wall-E. We might be living like in the Netflix show “Black Mirror” but let’s hope not.

honestly I struggled with stuff like this for the longest time but one day it just switched and I can't totally explain it but people are all at different points, and it took a while but there's some enjoyment to be found in the process and if you start to enjoy working towards the end goal then it makes such a difference.

@Lil Kabob It's meant obviously when you're trying to do something for yourself, something that should make you happy. And of course, it's not like if you're a drug addict or something like this you should keep doing it, obviously you need a bit of brain to survive anyways. Either way, I am trying my best at actually not giving a fuck about what people think, just like I preach.

Ive never spent more than 4k on my drift car and that's really all I need. Got it for 600 off my neighbor, amazing RWD junker. The draw isn't the car... The draw is the speed, the danger, and the thrill of drifting down a mountain pass. What's the point of getting a nice car if your not going to Street Race it anyway.

Very, very true. I always make sure I buy cars for myself, not for the acceptance of others. Comments like "when are you going to modify your x" or "when are you replacing your y" really bug me. There's almost an expectation online to buy a car, throw thousands of pounds/dollars at it, then sell it and buy something else. It's easy to say just zone these people out, but it's harder to actually do that in practise.

This is a great video and I wish there was more media like this when I was younger. Looking back, a lot of my failures in life came from reaching for certain areas of success too early, for example working my butt off in high school and college to buy and maintain a nice car instead of studying and waiting to get that nice (actually probably much nicer) car until I had a good career. I have a nicer paying job right now, but I'm not happy with it, and the time and expense of owning multiple cars right now is probably one of the biggest things holding me back from going back to school and working towards a career field that will make me much more satisfied in the long run. That being said, I am glad I was able to learn how to work on cars at a young age. That knowledge has allowed me to help out many friends along the way with their car maintenance and repairs....and also saved me a ton of money on my own as well, lol BTW your RX7 is absolutely beautiful
