I met Bob and his twin brother up in the canyons of the Hollywood Hills. We all used to race up there between Coldwater Canyon and Mullholland. Bob and Jim were incredibly funny and we always had a good time talking cars. They both spoke Japanese too. Also, there’s a movie about us inspired by a magazine article about our canyon racing. Called “King of the Mountain,” it starred Harry Hamlin and Dennis Hopper playing crazy as usual. It’s laughably bad. In the peak years there would be at least a hundred people watching from “the pits” at the top of the hill, with tow trucks waiting for mishaps.

I love a Miata. Just quick enough to be fun, you know exactly where each tire is on the road, predictably breaks traction, the handling is very responsive to throttle and brake inputs, and they are relatively cheap to buy and own.

I proudly own a 1990 NA and I am the 5 th owner. It is a local car and all of the owners, have been acquainted. I possess the complete history of the car and own the original shop manual used to prep the car for its initial sell when purchased from the show room floor. I cannot tell you how many times I have told the Miata Story. How the car model came to be is unique and his chance meeting with the chairman of Miata, changed the future for the better for drivers world over. This sums it up. My wife ask me once, " Do you know why I love the little red car?" No. I replied " Because it makes you smile." Driving a piece of automotive history does make me smile.

"We worked on it so long we didn't see the problem." Whether you're a detective on a cold case, a colorist on a blockbuster, or that guy trying to troubleshoot his dead-in-the-water Miata, this is a problem we all ultimately face at one time or another. Being humble enough recognize that and cede even a small portion of creative control over our work can bring significant benefits. Bob Hall seems like an excellent colleague and the first person you'd want to have around at any social gathering.

Re the leaking at the car wash; It's a feature of a lot of convertibles. Car washes use high pressure water sprayers which will force water into a car through any gap or loose area in the top. That usually doesn't happen with rain (i owned a Spitfire and a TR-6). I was a Mazda driver for a long time. I had a GLC, 323, 626, and four Mazda3's (not all at once). Never had a Miata because they were either too small to fit my drums into or too expensive. Now i drive a 2011 Mini Cooper which is fun to drive and has some room for my instrument. I have to admit that i kinda like the new Mazda3 hatchback, though...
