When it comes to a classic pipe tobacco of distinction that is simply timeless, few can compete with the likes of Carter Hall. It's one of my personal favorites especially when it comes to doing yard work and yearning for something that is consistent, comforting, and downright delicious.
I managed to get my hands on several sealed tins from the 1970s, when the blend was still made by its original manufacturer, RJ Reynolds. The blend was originally developed in the mid 1950s and John Middleton Inc. took over producing in 1987.
It is a Burley, Virginia mixture that is topped with Bourbon and Cocoa. I like to think of it as Prince Albert's "Sweeter" cousin.
Thankfully, this blend is still available today, and if you haven't had the opportunity to get some, I highly recommend it!
The pipes featured in this video come from the one and only Dr. Grabow!
Hope you enjoy me cracking open one of these delectable nostalgic time capsules. I will say that the original RJ Reynolds is much richer and all around better in my opinion, when compared to the current John Middleton production.
Take care and swell smokes, my friends!

This one is my favorite of the drugstore blends. Great for the beginner and an old friend for the experienced pipesmoker.

There was a time in my early years of pipe smoking, I met several people who always smoked this tobacco. I was always offered a bowl, but never really cared for it. It didn't have wonderful commercials like sea captains, turned lighthouse keepers, puffing their pipes and the aroma attracting women to their sides. Now, a codger, this is my main smoke, always toss between Carter Hall and Prince Albert. It's two, fabulous smokes. I don't know if women care for the aroma, but the deer seem to. It's a joy, having a cup of tea, out on the porch, smoking my pipe and watching the deer wander by.

All these years that I have smoked up to today it has been Carter Hall, and I have smoked a pipe since the 70's. Of course I have tried other blends, even some of the expensive one, but back I come to my old friend. Sad to say there is only one store in my area that sells it so I may have to start ordering it offline if they quit.

Not only is Carter Hall harder to find, but it’s not even made in the USA anymore which is a crime if you ask me! It’s been relocated to the Dominican Republic along with Prince Albert. I’ve heard they taste different now too

I’m pretty much in the minority with this opinion, but I think that Carter Hall beats having a premium blend all days of the week. It’s a simple blend with sweet chocolate and alcohol topping. It’s my all time favorite pipe tobacco, simple and sweet with not bite. Thanks for sharing!

What can you say about Carter Hall? It’s a near perfect blend. It burns beautifully and is always mild and smooth. I do recall however, that the stuff I smoked in the early 1990’s was considerably more pungent with the classic topping of bourbon/cocoa. The new stuff (manufactured in the Dominican Republic) is a bit lighter on the topping. Maybe I’m mistaken but that’s my recollection. I still love it, and might even be inclined to regard the new stuff as better since the artificial topping has been scaled back. Someone let me know if you also recalled a stronger aroma from the tin in years past. By the way, I traveled to Carter Hall (the estate) this past autumn. It was deserted and quiet and absolutely beautiful!! It’s a real place. I don’t think I need to mention what I was smoking as I walked the grounds.

This particular iteration from RJ Reynolds is much better than any other version of Carter Hall I have tried. Rich, smooth, fragrant and no harsh artificial edges at all. It was such a thrill getting to try some of the original stuff. Thanks for your support and for sharing!

I have a tub I just opened that is a pre-Dominican manufactured Pennsylvania made stuff. Carter Hall was my all day blend for a few years. I went to SWR regular for two years then switched to Prince Albert. PA all the way for me.

Fantastic video! Love the pipes, ashtrays, and tobacco! Great videography and music! Really set the mood nicely. It's shocking how great of shape the tobacco is in after all these years. How was the smoke? Does it differ from the modern batches of C&H? Thanks. Really enjoyed the video.

Thank you, Nick! Yes, this does taste better to me than the current version of Carter Hall. It’s smoother, richer, and the aroma is next level good. I’m sure age has something to do with it but it makes me question if Middleton messed with the formula when they took over this blend. Cheers pal!

Looks nothing like the Carter Hall I have in the pouches lol. Probably way better! I know they're made in the DR now but this and Prince Albert in the pouches have a chemical tinge I dislike, especially in PA. I'd be interested to try the newer DR ones, I bet that's gone now. Carter Hall is my favorite but I'd probably lean towards the Prince if that chemical taint was gone, LOL!

The original RJ Reynolds PA and CH are most definitely different and better than any iteration of the Middleton versions. It’s wild how blends change (some for the better but usually for the worse) over the years. As a general rule of thumb, I’ve almost always found that the tub/large can version of blends are usually better than the pouch format. They tend to have less of the chemical taste. I’ve never had the DR version of PA or CH but I’m sure I’ll get around to it eventually. You should try some and see if there is a difference! Take care and thanks again for dropping by
