Kami brought the dragon balls back because people were still pure hearted, evidently seen in Goku. However after the fight with King Piccolo, as we all know, Piccolo Jr. was born So Goku went up to the lookout to get training and was warned of Piccolo Jr., so he trained with Kami for 3 years so he could face him. There wasn’t any condition mentioned as far as I know

General Tao was the first villain to absolutely destroy Goku, he was a minor character but he had a major impact.

I wouldn't call Tao a minor character 🤔🤔 Although he only had about half a season, he put Goku to work, hard. 😕 Had that boy training and he didn't even realize it 😅 it was nice seeing him pop back up in Z. Not a huge character, but definitely a stepping stone in the overall story.

King Piccolo also introduces the formula most later arcs would follow. Goku is taken out of commission for a time. The other fighters have to band together to hold the villain back until Goku arrives. Goku trains or gets a sudden power up and fights the villain after they kill main characters. The Saiyan, Namek, Android, and to a lesser extent Buu sagas all follow this formula.

We kinda already got that in the Red Ribbon Army Saga. When they were fighting against General Blue and Goku was taken out of it for a bit, while Krillin and Bulma almost got killed until Goku finally arrived.

Saiyan, Buu and Androids don't follow this formula though. Vegeta beats Goku, Gohan beats Cell, Buu was more of a group effort after a ridiculous string of stuff they try against him. Really it's only on Namek that Toriyama follows what you lined out, and ironically that's the best arc in Dragonball.

If I'm gonna be honest, King Piccolo had the best presentation as a villain out of any character in Dragon Ball. The build up to him regaining his youth and killing Shenron then actually achieving global conquest before being struck down by Goku has always been awe-inspiring to me. Props to Toriyama for cooking with this villain!

The build up to piccolo and Frieza in namek is one of the greatest build ups. I like frieza's a little more. But king piccolo killing shenron was one of the greatest villain moments in dragon ball.

Over there, it seems to be completely normal to joke about / show sexuality in the pursuit of humor, even in kids content, as it’s really all just jokes. Showing Goku’s ‘parts’? Always done either in a harmless or comedic fashion to show his ignorance of society. Bulma’s scenes? Always used as a vehicle for comedy, usually to laugh at Roshi. Stuff like the Ran-Fan (I think) fight? Done as both a comedic showing of her very poor fighting, and as a show of Nam’s skill to be able to fight with eyes closed. These adult scenes are totally fine in Japan because sexuality usually isn’t being used for looks, but as a vehicle to do something else, usually comedy. Also why the ‘sexy-jutsu’ in Naruto is totally kid-friendly humor in Japan, and allowed to be in a Shonen magazine. Other adult stuff in the show like death and alcohol are also fine, even in the west. Death is treated either as a serious vehicle to drive the characters emotions, and/or as a way to show the evil of the villains. And the alcohol is also used for comedy. TL;DR: the sex is used for comedy and other adult themes are used for character growth or also comedy. Japanese standards are very different. Holy shit why did I type this all out.

Exactly. I have been saying this for a long time. The guy's offspring were stronger than almost anyone in the planet, he was strong enough to kill Shen Long, and it was the first time Goku had to resort to "mystical" ways to get strong quickly due to how overwhelming Piccolo was. Heck, he killed the strongest human on earth at the time (Roshi). That was also the reason he learned to properly sense and control his ki/chi.

That's why Toriyama said Piccolo was his favourite character: he was his first true evil no nonsense enemy, even Tao Pai Pai did silly stuff like flying on pilars and killing people with his tounge. Piccolo was ruthless and went straight to world domination.

i mean; hes literally all the evil contained within god; unleashed on the world. if you got killed by king piccolo, his pure evil kept you from going to the afterlife. you stayed in a purgatory inbetween he was the first real challenge/immoveable barrier for goku. there was no negotiating with him, no slowing him down. the only way was to drink the ultra divine water (which had a high probably of killing you) and hoping for the best

I think the case could be made that Mercenary Tao was the villain who changed everything. Goku lost to him in their first fight and had to undergo intense training in order to beat him in their second fight. Tao also killed Bora, resulting in Goku using the Dragon Balls to bring Bora back to life.

Well said, although I think the most brutal and terrifying villain title goes to Zamasu. He’s the one villain neither goku nor his friends could ever beat(they used every move they had used in their past victories from the spirit bomb sword to the potara earrings but to no avail). Not to mention his crimes outclassed what any past or future dragon ball villains have done: destroying the super dragon balls, killing all the kais and destroyers throughout the multiverse, wiping out all of humanity along with other unspecified planets, and if not prevented by Zeno, destroying all of life in every timeline. This guy is like the dragon ball version of ultron from What If….

If it wasnt for king piccolo and his minions killing krillin, goku likely wouldnt have had the reaction he had to frieza blowing him up, because for goku, that meant krillin was likely dead for good this time. He relapsed into the rage he felt towards king piccolo bearing that responsibility originally.

Honorable mention: Raditz for dropping the biggest bombshell of all dragon ball, taking Goku's son causing the 3rd best pair up in dragon ball, causing the other saiyans who show up to earth, and be the reason as to why best dad Piccolo dies. Which causes our heroes to go to Namek to revive him, but Krillin dies which causes a top 3 best anime moment which was Goku going super saiyan, which leads to every other event in Dragon ball. Really Raditz deserves some more respect but can't get any.

agreed. we went from funny adventures with funny interesting powers or tournaments as silly as they can be to... ... a monster that kills krilin, destroys shen-ron, kills muten roshi, terrorized the entire world and almost kills goku. this is not a red ribbon, or pinky tiara, army or any other BS, this is the first serious threat to the entire world and, let's not forget, the first time the bad guy gets a wish granted by shenron. King Piccolo was fear incarnate. he was the loss of all hope in a world level. it was the first time goku fought not for a tournament or to get the dragon balls, he fought for revenge and to save the world. this was, indeed, a huge change in dragon ball.

Hail to the king. One of Goku’s few kills and one done in anger and desperation. I think it is a deep fridge horror cut that among the villains proxies that are manifested by fear during the TOP mini arch “Forest of Fear” King Piccolo is one. Not Piccolo from the 23ed tournament, not some version that Krillin would have met. King Piccolo . That’s all bc of Goku. Krillin had his own demon to reface. He was killed the first time before he got to see King Piccolo. Goku was scared, at some point, of King Piccolo. Probably from around the time his heart stopped. He was so out gunned for the first time in his life! That’s been deep in the freezer.
