Dan Quayle misspelled "potatoes" in a spelling bee he took part in. It was a letter he wrote in regards to Murphy Brown being written as a single mother that got him the attention of the TV show. two separate incidents, but from around the same time.

You're totally mixing up your Dan Quayle facts...he was a judge at a spelling bee and told a kid who spelled "potato" he was wrong...

The Murphy Brown part of it was that he accused the show of glamorizing single-motherhood, when the character got pregnant. Since the show was named after the character, the show runners were able to play that clip, in an episode, as though Quayle was talking about the character, in-universe. She responded by having a dump truck full of potatoes emptied onto his lawn (or the White House lawn, I can't recall that detail).

Great video guys! I thoroughly enjoyed the sporadic approach to Jim's storytelling in this issue. Even though some may have found it confusing, I still find the fast-pace story telling to be very fitting --while also separating itself from others books, like X-Men. Attempts to dilute the story and make it more palatable for audiences could have resulted in a much weaker issue.

Silvestri’s run on New X-men 2001 #151 + is absolute proof that he should have been up there at the top. Insane talent.

I knew about Dan Quayle, the Potatoe thing, the Murphy Brown thing, but like 13-odd-year-old me in Ireland had never seen Dan Quayle and had no idea who that guy was meant to be at the end of the comic until they mentioned him by name in like issue 3 or whatever.

Chris Claremont's Uncanny X-Men is the greatest run in comic book history. The stories, character development and progression. Also the contributions of amazing artists that brought his stories to life. John Bryne, John Romita, Marc Silvestri (my favorite artist to this day) and Jim Lee. Honorable mention to Rick Leonardi as he only drew a few issues but love his style.

I was all in on all those early Image superhero books. It's pretty disappointing how many of them just died like this one, Stormwatch, & Cyber Force. Have only Spawn and Savage Dragon survived? My LCS doesn't even carry SD.

Joe Rosas was Jim Lee's colorist starting around Uncanny X-men issue 273, I think, right after X-Tinction Agenda, replacing Glynis Oliver, who had colored more than 100 issues of Uncanny X-men at that point. I remember being really impressed with Rosas, who went for a kind of cel-shading look, when I was a kid, but nowadays I prefer Glynis Oliver, who chose more interesting colors and got the image to read so strongly on the page without doing all the shadow and highlight that Rosas does. Reading The Wild Storm made me really dig the WildC.A.T.S. characters and premise, but I think the "first issue" problem here is that they try to throw every idea they have at the wall right away. Maybe the alien invasion could have been spelled out over the space of several issues, for instance? Maybe introduce less of the team in this first issue? But for first-time writers, I don't think they were thinking this way.

I think Wildcats was the least successful Image book. Youngbloods story may have been non existent but this had a lot of words and was very boring. I remember it being no fun. Guess I’ll see if memory is correct.

I have two of those and i lived in Venezuela, so there must be a lot of those in the world XD. I also don´t love that comic when i was a kid i didn´t liked it either so when i grew up i checked it again hoping that there was something that i didn´t understand because it was not in my native language and it turned out to be just a bad written comic book

When I was a teenager/early-20-something back in the day, I honestly thought Jim Lee (and Rob, and everyone else) were amazing artists. Looking at this issue now, it just looks like absolute nonsense to me (that Zealot pin-up, for instance). Funny how tastes change over time.
