Who is Ron Spomer
For 44 years I’ve had the good fortune to photograph and write about my passion - the outdoor life. Wild creatures and wild places have always stirred me - from the first flushing pheasant that frightened me out of my socks in grandpa’s cornfield to the last whitetail that dismissed me with a wag of its tail. In my attempts to connect with this natural wonder, to become an integral part of our ecosystem and capture a bit of its mystery, I’ve photographed, hiked, hunted, birded, and fished across much of this planet. I've seen the beauty that everyone should see, survived adventures that everyone should experience. I may not have climbed the highest mountains, canoed the wildest rivers, caught the largest fish or shot the biggest bucks, but I’ve tried. Perhaps you have, too. And that’s the essential thing. Being out there, an active participant in our outdoor world.

I love the .308 by far my favourite, and to be honest it isn’t so much about performance. Most of my shots are between 50 yards and 150 yards so at that range any notable cartridge would suffice. The real reason I love my .308 was stated in the video “I like to be able to buy ammunition” I can go to my local hunting store and I 100 percent know I can pick up cartridges in any weight and configuration for a fairly decent price. Oddly enough my brother prefers the 7mm 08 and he sometimes has great trouble finding ammunition and then it’s usually over priced and bullet weight is sometimes not exactly what he wants. Because remember if you sight your gun in 150 grain bullet that’s probably what you should use to hunt with and if all you can find is 130 grain it may cause issues with your zero

I am leaving today for an Elk hunt with my 12yr old daughter. It is her first big game hunt and her rifle is chambered in ...7mm-08. I debated three years ago when I bought her rifle and it came down to selection of youth rifles in a color she wanted. It was between 6.5 cm, 7mm-08 and 308, which I also have a few. The 6.5cm didn't have a lot of youth rifles (at the time in my area) and the 7mm-08 having a little less recoil might have tipped the scales. Another factor was it would be a new caliber for me. The one argument against the 7mm-08 vs 308 is ammunition availability. Especially now. I can find alot of 308 (relative) but have not found any 7mm-08 except for the light loaded rounds. The .308 does work well enough, but its proponents are always falling back on supply chain arguments. Which is really how we got stuck in the .30 rut in the first place. The .30-40 was quickly obsoleted, but we had to stick by all that .30 tooling when we sorted out its successor, when we could've skipped forwards to a 6.5 or 7 over a century ago. ;-)

Circumstantial is the reason why a lot of not-as-good cartridges remain deeply ingrained in minds, even though manufacturers have improved most every aspect of the case, powder, bullet. Its funny how the 308 was touted as a lighter recoiling version of the 30-06 for women and younger hunters but when the compare the 7mm08 to the 308 they say the 7mm is for women and youth. Fact of the matter is both will do the job at closer ranges and at longer ranges the 7mm-08 will perform a little better than the 308. I will agree the 308 might gets more support with a wider selection of bullet weights and construction but that is more a fault with the manufacturers not supporting the 7mm08 as much. All the arguments made in favour of the 308 can be made in favour of the 7mm-08 when you compare it to the 6.5 Creed but not many writers want to point that out. Everybody knows that the lighter recoiling Creed is geared more for masculine long range hunters than the 7mm08...right?

@@BabaNovac792 Not really. My 1990 Sako's accuracy is holding up better than I am. Most hunters will never shoot out a barrel of their big game hunting rifle with any of the calibers I mentioned. And most wouldn't even notice the accuracy drop off if it started. In my considerable time being involved with firearms, I have seen exactly one shot out rifle and it was a 243. I'm not considering surplus rifles and I can't vouch for the maintenance of the 243 but bullets it fired tumbled in 100 yards. The reason I took the shot is the other moose that was with it had already turned and made it to the forest and I wasn't interested in taking a quartering shot while it would have been moving so I took my shot. I've never had to take a second shot with my 7mm-08. But I have to admit I'm working up loads with Federal TBT in 140 and 160 grains to hopefully get another 50 yards of effective range on moose in case I get another chance to hunt them. It does all I ask and doesn't ruin much meat. That's good enough for me.

I’m slowly planning on acquiring a rifle for everything smaller than elk - deer, antelope and bighorn (if I draw a tag before I’m too old to walk up the mountain to hunt one). I keep waffling between the 308, 7mm-08 and 270 Winchester with occasional thoughts of getting a 6.5 PRC.

You guys are funny, because you both have good points. As a matter of fact, I was debating these two cartridges when I bought my Winchester model 70 many years ago, and you know what, I chose .308 after a lot of research, but the reasons I chose it just barely beat out the other cartridge.

All depends on your criteria: Do you mind recoil? Does cost matter? Do you need a lightweight rifle? What's the max range you intend to shoot? What's the max size of game you hunt? Some of these answers will provide opposite conclusions. Compromise is necessary or buy for a specific use case. Hence we have lots of choices in the market 😉

This was hilarious. I'm into the oddball cartridges, and I've always preferred the 7-08. BUT I used the 308 a bunch when I was younger, and it performed great- and definitely easier to find if you need some more. That said- if you are going to go 308, might as well go 30-06-. You have more variety of loads, even easier to find it on a shelf, and the difference in recoil is insignificant.

So you guys made a taste great less filling commercial! My uncle hunted most of his life with a 308 till he figured out that he could still shoot his deer, loved venison with a 22 Hornet. He asked me to load up some for him so I did 45 gr Speer SP. two hundred rounds for him, and that was the last he ever ask me to load some ammo. When he died 24 years later, I found that ammo he still had 170 rounds still in the box. Oh and there was a note, Nephew, thank you for loading this ammo for me. When you read this I will be gone. Even though I never said much, you were the best part of my life. I have that hornet I still have quite a bit of that ammo some 15 years on and the rifle. I shoot or have shot a 7mm-08 a lot. Really "better performing" has more to do with the shooter knowing their rifle and cartridge characteristics so well that they can put the bullet where it needs to go for greatest effect. Beware the hunter who owns only one rifle chambered in their favorite cartridge.

I have been looking to get my first boot action hunting rifle, and so far when I look in stores for ammo the most common and affordable cartridges is .308 like the gentleman said I would like to buy ammo for my rifle, the price of 7mm08 or 243 or 30-06 is vastly more costly than 308, I can buy bulk 308 to plink and practice the fundamentals and a couple of boxes of premium ammo for when I hunt (hopefully soon) for way cheaper than the cheapest stuff in any other cartridges, I agree with the ballistic point mentioned in the video, but what good is ballistic data if you can’t buy the darn ammo in the first place
