Choosing an exhaust for a 1uz can be a delicate topic but lets have a discussion about it.
The Cartune Company (2003) Ltd in New Zealand does 1uz and 3uz conversions / parts and wiring. We have been working on UZ Toyota V8 engines since 2004 when we did our own Hiace van to transport dirtbikes around NZ. Since then we have swapped to doing mainly just Lexus V8 work from a family owned farm hidden away in our paradise , surrounded by the NZ native bush. Every now and then I play with the idea of putting an exhaust system in my very stock looking LS400. But I love the best part of driving an LS400: peace and quiet. Getting old I guess.

I bought a used 98 ls400 and first thing I did was cut the resonators and mufflers off. It sounds great but theres a little bit of drone. Oh well ....

love it. bought a toyota soarer with the gen 1 uz (which i learned from you the difference) and i got told a timing belt is a nightmare (but watched your video of it it and its not so bad) so now i can do it with confidence. love your work mate 💪🏻

especially when space is tight. Ive also got a couple of wiring jobs coming which might interest you too. Look of for the blue engine for a boat and the Lemon wiring job. Glad that boat is all sorted. Cheers Kelvin

The show engine masters has a few episodes about exaust sizing vs HP/flow ect. It seems to coordinate with what your saying. It's awesome that you do videos on toyota 1uz as they are not too popular where I live in the U.S.

Mine is 3 inch from the headers into an x pipe to 3.5 inch dual shotgun exhaust tips, just need to tune but it sounds very rowdey and its very loud just how i like it😂

Informative as always Kelvin. I cooked up the entire system myself. Went with 1.5" primaries into large 2.5" collectors and then 2.5"/side out to the back. I knew it was too big but I also always planned to stick a blower on it. Also purely for the sound I didn't install a cross over, probably lost a few ponies by doing that though!

It is a big system on an NA. We did one like that and it was great once the blower went on. Although without the crossover it sounded funny so we added one.

@@CartuneNZ hey bro I’ve got leak at the manifold or smewhr round thr in the left sounds like a bit of ticking noise like a loose flange gasket or smthn it’s not the bucket n shims I’ve had those readjusted the mechanic I took it to was shit I think he even said it was hard work trying to find a manifold gasket for my ls400 think it 90’s era Would u know the part number or point me in the right direction of what it might b?

Thanks Kelvin!! Just put headers and Y pipe on a 2UZed 4Runner. The old exhaust needs replaced which will be soon, and you have me sold on the smaller diameter from the Y pipe back. Heavy 4Runner can't afford to lose any Torques. Thinking 2.25" Thanks again!! Oh and Tell the cows I said "Good Day!!"

What are your thoughts on high flow cats for my 3uz? Im not sure the flow rate on the stock cats but the sard cats are 180 cells per square inch. I have these sard cats paired with PPE headers and a 2.5 inch catback. I did notice low end torque loss but increase in mid torque and high rpm

Hi Kelvin great video again😉I follow as I have a UZ 100 with the 2UZ in it down here in ChCh and want to fit your headers as I’m sure they will fit in there albeit by extending down the collector and fitting the flange a bit lower. I have been sharing your vids to the over seas landcruiser guys as all the videos are relevant to the 2UZ engines and your content is spot on.

Thanks. I have played with a couple of cruisers too. One trick we did was increase the size of the AFM body to drop voltage slightly, resulting is slightly leaner mixtures and better fuel economy , at the same time as improving the exhaust. Cheers Kelvin

Hey Kelvin! As always.... Sound advice mate! Initially, 12+ years ago, I learned that the hard way haha Not sure if you got to witness the original 3" tailpipe and resonator??? Had a pretty relentless drone at 100km/h and the exhaust had a slightly loud bark to it. Cert guy wasn't impressed either. Off with it's tail!!! Whacked a 2.5" on there with a decent muffler. Nice low V8 rumble and it went way better!!! Cert guy approved and me happy!!! .....Until eventually 2 snails joined the party and brought the noise!!!! Muahahaha :D

@@CartuneNZ Sounds like a plan. I also need you to reinsert your magic touch back into the ECU. It's been dyno tuned twice since you. However, they involved discovery and immediate compensation for fuel and spark issues which I've now fixed.

How much of 2.25 or 2.5 exaust piping would you need on a setup to get better flow and free up some hp, right now im thinking of replacing the 3rd cat with two high flow cats, going into two x pipes, then 2.25 piping back to some sort of tip

Thanks for all the info ! Very appreciated , my 1uz is currently stock but I'm not planning on leaving it stock so I will make some 1 3/4 " long primaries to match 2.5 colectores and end up with a 3" pipe would love to hear your opinion.

Would make for an interesting system , Ive seen something similar with a set matched to the correct firing order so some from each side collected. Was a work of art in a rear mounted vehicle. I sort of feel that trying to get 8 pipes to merge might cause some flow restrictions so the complication might not result in the gains as one might hope. Looking at NZ superstock headers might give you some more ideas of performance header design. Cheers Kelvin

I got a 3inch piping kit about 2 weeks ago for my 1uz vvti, I've been at 2.25 from each bank to a 2.25 single all the way back and thought it was too restrictive when going by other charts online and this one. I decided to keep the 2.25 per bank to a 3 inch single all the way back to have a bit too much flow rather than too little, using a gs400 ecu 310 horsepower. Would you say its fair for a vvti motor or will I still notice a loss in torque?

Great video mate. Really explained it all. So, as an example, and using what you've said about cooling and retraction, if I put headers on my 92LS400, go 2.5 inch off each, into a Y, then 3inch to the back, split into twin 2.25 to the rear, That would be adequate? I currently have the rear mufflers off just for some sound. I can't help but think the factory mufflers (5 of them) are somewhat restrictive. I don't think it would be too much to expect a 20hp gain from a properly formed exhaust. P.S. The close up only intensifies the message.

If you want noise you got it. I think with a modified engine making plenty of crank hp then the 2.5 section would be fine however with stock engines or mild tune you may find better torque with 2.25 primaries or even two inch, two inch might be laughed at though. Compare crank hp to flow when choosing. Cheers Kelvin

It seems like dual 2.25" is plenty for most 1uz builds... but why do most aftermarket headers have 2.5" collectors? The long tubes im looking at have 2.5" collectors but my stock vvti 1uz certainly won't make enough hp to need a dual 2.5" system. Would you still follow the chart to determine pipe size even if it means going smaller right after the header collector? Thanks for the great info!

there is some exhaust theory which regard to collector size and then dropping to the smaller pipe at that point which works well. So they exhaust drops size just after the collector is normal.

Mmm that made me think. I got 3 inch ready to fit with tundra Heathers thinking it will do great with the Eaton 112 supercharger. I'm I making a mistake by doing the 3 inch instead 2.5? Thanks

Work out your expected crank hp. Then check out an online calculator and 3 inch might be fine. Remember Its based off crank HP. Cheers Kelvin

Hey man, Ive got a 92 SC400. Exhaust is gone from headers all the way back. What do you recommend the best option is for an exhaust? I really do not mind not having cats, but Im looking for something cheap, though there are Zerooooo replacements. I need to do something ASAP, too loud in the neighborhood at 6 am haha. Cheers

I would do primary in 2 1/4 with resonators and then merge into single 2 1/2 with a good muffler.

Mine's made out of a factory fitted "SS Commodore" system. Had to make it on my back with a stick welder and grinder only. Had a bloke with a CV Monaro ask me how it sounds so good. Stock Soarer cats and mufflers only.

You seem to be one of the most knowledgeable guys with the uz series engines, in youre opinion would long tubes or shorties be preferable for a 2uz VVTI. I plan on running duals with either 2 1/4” or 2 1/2” with an x pipe for the rest of the system. This is a bone stock 2005 vvti 4.7 engine for now. Other question I have is if there’s a way to completely remove the secondary air injection with an ecu mod or the such. I’ve got 197k miles and I know that systems a ticking time bomb and I’ll eventually have a limp mode situation when I actually need the truck!

As the 2uz is designed for torque I prefer long tubes. 2 1/4 is plenty at the front, then we normally drop to single 2 1/2. To big will cost you torque. Some 2uz have a reflashable ecu, some do not. That would enable removal of secondary air system, something we dont get in nz.

I just had a question for you, is it possible to remove the factory exhaust manifolds with the engine still in the vehicle or is it only possible with the subframe dropped.? Hello. Yes it is possible in all the models I have worked on. I go in through the side with long extensions and out they come. Not so easy though and I think sometimes it would be easier to drop the engine a few inches to do the job. Cheers

@@TaylorMadejdm1975 yes, under the engine bay the soarer is the same as sc400 except for steering shaft being on other side, lhd for sc400 and rhd for soarer. Provided headers are designed for both lhd and rhd its all good.

Hey bro you know much on a 94 lexus sc400?? My 1uzfe feels as if its being restricted from air so i hollowed out the clogged cats, im in the process of cleaning the whole throttle body and air intake manifold and noticed my egr sensor was filthy, would cleaning it off be okay? Or would i have to replace the sensor?

I want to make a 4-1-2-1 exhaust pipe for my 1uz. I use a 2.5-inch exhaust pipe for the middle and rear section, and I want to make an equal length banana exhaust pipe for the front section. How many inches do you think are suitable?

So what's your Opinion on running a x-pipe on a LS400 with the first gen 1uz? I'm running on my 92 LS400 2.5 inch off the cats to a 2.5 x-pipe then 2.5 inch pipe out the rear to 2 stainless mufflers.

I like X pipes for twin systems. 2.5 is a bit big for normal NA setups however you could supercharge to solve this. haha. Cheers Kelvin

I do on manual engine swaps. For stock vehicles and autos I try to leave the system working as intended as Toyota fitted for a reason. To me it doesn't make sense to remove one of the things that makes a nice car nice. Cheers Kelvin.

No idea of the best place in your location but often taking the part number to a toyota dealer is good for one off connector purchasing. I buy mine in bulk from several oem suppliers, often 1000-2500 units minimum order.

I've got a Lexus sc400 I went with 2.5 inch duals all the way back with a x pipe in the middle Left the stock manifolds and mufflers and deleted the cats It sounds very good but I do notice the low rpm torque is not great and it has a clap at low rpms I want to get some long tubes for it do you think that would smooth out the low rpms and get rid of the clap? Or should I get rid of the stock mufflers and see if that's what's causing the clap

Personally I would be fitting some long tubes to improve low end torque then I'd fit some quality mufflers to get sound right. Cheers Kelvin

@@CartuneNZ sorry, exhaust note as in getting the right sound, not just quiet and loud. UZ engines often have a horrible "flutter" sound out the exhaust if that makes sense. I'll email you 👍

Yes, all uz series exhaust manifolds can bolt onto the heads of other uz engines

Hey this was extremely helpful. I don't want to lose the torque at all. Many people have done x-pipe with 2.25 inch pipes and I think I will end up doing that sometime in the future. I see a good number of setups where people do dual 2.5 inch with x pipes but they are on the later vvti engines. Not too sure this would be good on first gen engine with lower compression but I would like to hear your thoughts.

Looking at the hp flow of twin 2 1/2 pipe its around 463 horsepower at the fly, which is way more than most n/a uz produce, I'm running that size on a supercharged 1uz vvti and realistically its still a bit big. More gains will be made with good headers, moving from stock to flowing unequal lengths, then to tuned equal lengths than going oversize on the rear section of exhaust. www.exhaustvideos.com/faq/how-to-calculate-muffler-size-pipe-diameter/

I'm going to have a 3uz with stock headers and a reflash from quantum auto/all4swap, which claims about +20hp/tq. This should put me in the 320-330hp range. According to this chart I should go 3" if single. Does that seem reasonable? Thanks

The stock headers will hold up the overall output and especially the mid range and is where there are further gains to be made. If running the stock manifolds I would only go 2.5 inch for the tail half. I would do 2 1/4 off the headers until the merge. If fitting proper headers I would go three inch. Cheers Kelvin

@@CartuneNZ Ok, thanks! I would run full headers but I was told that I can't do that without dyno time, and nobody local can reflash these ecu's. I'm also on a budget. Perhaps in the future. Thanks again.

@@CartuneNZ So his tune should work just fine with no tweaks? I asked a question about this in Lextreme and was told by George_R that no in person tuning was required if I had stock intake, headers, and cams. This led me to believe I had to leave the headers alone. Thanks

Totally different tune required if you need cams. So if you asked about cams and exhaust the answer would be different to cams or exhaust.

@@CartuneNZ I see and I saw in the video. I’m guessing it’s not just as easy on stock platforms to not run a cat cuz then the flow is missing like 10 inches of anything

@@CartuneNZ if you go in my channel I have a short of the ls fired up! It sounds amazing on open headers but our ears were ringing for like 10 mins hah
