Carved works is the collective term used for wooden decorations mounted aboard a ship. They've largely gone extinct, since they serve no purpose other than aesthetic. Historically they were one of the most important parts of the vessel. They were a vital propaganda tool for showing the power and affluence of the shipbuilder. Figureheads were considered to have magical properties. They were a sort of good luck charm that could guide them to their destination, and protect the ship from environmental hazards and evil spirits.

"The Boat" truly the height of ship naming. Another naval coup for the Dutch.

The funniest decoration on the vasa, is the lifesize polish men stuffed into small cages in prone position, facing the part of the where sailors would take a shit. As the ship was supposed to be used against the polish it was the sort of dickslinging propaganda i can respect

it's a reference to a Polish saying where "going under the table" is a sign of submission, will cover it in the video on the Vasa's ship decorations

Thanks for all your work. Surely Boaty MacBoat Face is the best ship name ever , even if it wasn't chosen in the end.😊

It makes me kinda sad to realize we don't really do anything just for aesthetics anymore. Everything is just drab and "functional". The USA has the biggest military budget in the world - would it kill them to add a little pizzazz? An aircraft carrier already billions of dollars, what's a couple more to give it some aesthetic value?
