Carving and Polishing Fire Agate with a Dremel. This one came from a ‪@FireAgateMark‬ parcel and I carve a little creature out of it. Probably not a traditional shape for the material but I had some fun.

That is so cute. I imagine the color pops much brighter in person. I like that you carved a little animal rather than free formed or cab. That’s a keeper.

Its hard to capture it but it is a bit of a duller one. The stone being so dark halfway through the recording I decided to bump up the light significantly to give it a better shot at showing off.

I think the green on the koala looks like it’s munching on a leaf poking out the side of its mouth. What a cute carving!

Good looking material. I was thinking hippo or brown bear at first for the fire agate, but then the Koala picture sold me.

Dude excellent carving. You're a natural fire agate guy. Those new burrs seem to take to the fire agate being faster too. I'm gonna send this video to fire agate mark now. Glad I sent ya the fire agate from him. Don't give it all away lol!!!! That's gonna be some decent stuff value wise +++ collection wise when they're done.

Carving opal is like a walk in the park compared to following fire agate layers, but when it is done right, they rival the best opal and they are agate tough. Mining America goes into fine detail like Mark does.
@RoysRocks

That's what I think as well. The whole structure of fire agate is just so strange to get used to. Like wavey boulder opal thin seams on steroids.

@@RoysRocks The old gold standard for rockhound rough was bright surface color under a thick, able to just be cabbed, agate vein on top preferably with a flat layer, not a lot of "towers & textures". I have yet to crack open my Diashine for even an opal.

I've seen them just make a cavachon and it's like you see down into the stone... I guess they just wheel the texture off... It seems to me a new hot item

Fire agate is a carvers dream. I didn't know you could cab it, but I don't doubt it. The color layers can be thin and different for each bubble, but when done right they look amazing. Edit: It turned out great, congratulations! Good call on the aluminum oxide.

As an ex-wildlife carer I have never had to care for a wombat so dont know much about them. I was more of a possum man. Actually, we would get a few owls as well. They love getting stuck in fences.

low grade fire agate with very little bubbles can be cabbed i dont recommend cabbing nicely formed pieces as you'll burn really good color

btw if you'd like roy id be happy to send you some deer creek fire agate rough it carves a lot easier then Mexican dark base rough because you can candle with a torch like you can opal and see all the diffrent fire layers from the sides (its also just nicer because its typically a lot brighter). also in regard to your thinning it on a flat lap, I very comfortably take my stones down to about 5mil thick. Fire agate is extremely strong as long as there isn't fractures present in the stone.
@RoysRocks
@RoysRocks Ай бұрын
I haven't heard of deer creek fire agate before, interesting that it is easier to carve. I still just try torching this stuff and you can get a slight glow but most of the time I'm just going in blind and hoping to hit some colour. 5mm sounds like a good thickness. I haven't buzzed it down yet but I'll do that. The stuff seems rock solid compared to opal so I wouldn't be surprised if even 2mm was still solid. 💪

Good vid Roy,it was nice to see you do something a bit different. I haven't worked any fire agate before. How hard is it to get the rough? I tried to get rough fire obsidian, but to no avail, the people that mine it dont like to part with it rough. Well that's what i found

I think to be classed as a fire agate it does have to have the bronze bubble colour. The really good ones have full on flashes of colour play like opal with greens/golds/reds/blues/purples.

Hey Roy, besides koalas and wombats would a freeform have been suitable here? If you trimmed off the small colorless leg on the right and rounded it off would it have a more 3 tiered and sculptural effect? Great job by the way, fire agate is one of my favorite stones. Very underrated imo.

Just say no to cabbing fire agate....detail carve it for maximum color. Treat the brown agate cover as potch or the color bars on the bots as color bars....hope that helps.
