Dark Coober Pedy Opal Carving and Polishing with Hard Resin Burs.
Making up for my failed attempt at using the new hard resin burs with a decent example.

So glad you are taking us along with you as you do the testing. Glad you’re using a variety of stones. I look forward to seeing the progress.

Next up... Fire agate! Possibly. I still don't understand that stuff but I do know it is harder.

Cant wait to see the final product, less burrs are definitely cheaper than 5 that don't all work.

Even better than the money savings... The TIME! So much faster to get the same result and we are all one step closer to the grave each day so that is the huge win in my eyes now.

"Not happy, Jan". Oh hell Roy, I cracked up! Only in Oz! Great heads up on the resin point. I have plenty of that scrap Boulder that Alice picked up. Great place to start. Can't bugger up a rubbish bit of dump site stuff. By the time I get through that lot, I can start on the rough.😊. Thanks again.

Haha I keep saying texta as well which turns out isn't widely used so I try to use permanent marker which I dont think I have ever used outside of youtube!!!

Nice gem, it looked a little like rough from Mintabie at the start. Shame about the 3000 bur the others worked great. 2x👍

I was suspicious of the origin as well while working it. Was a bit harder than I expected and had a bit of shyness as well. That rough side did certainly feel like CP though so I can't be 100% sure.

Cant wait to see what it looks like when you've finished 😊. Just wondering what you use for doublet material please?
@RoysRocks

The backing will probably be obsidian. I still have slabs of it lying around for doublets.

I'd say you ARE an opal carving content creating machine. Nice video and nice looking rock. Also, wondering if that staining bur is a case of the ugly duckling... who knows? Thanks again!

I will for sure give it another shot and I do have a handful of test units but it seems like a different resin.

This was another informative and enjoyable video, Roy. Thanks for that. I just tried to polish some little pieces of opal with felt tips and diamond paste. I just put it down. It's oil based paste, and it feels like the stone has turned to candle wax after I used it. It looks like it too. I think that I need to go over it again with an unused felt tip to lift the residue off the stones. I have been messing around with a big chunk of water opal, it's looking like some sort of toffee now and a little bit of boulder opal that I either burned or it's getting stained from the iron stone. Is it my imagination or does opal smell like burned hair when you grind one spot too long?
@RoysRocks
@RoysRocks Ай бұрын
I've used oil based before and it can be a little slimy but typically you can just wipe and rinse with water. I dont think I have ever smelt any burning hair smell from carving an opal before. If cutting with water the stone never even heats up.

Could it be some permanent marker left on the 3K grit from the last stone? I've experienced that with novas that they get stained from the marker and then marks the next stone.
@RoysRocks
@RoysRocks Ай бұрын
No that 3k has never been in contact with permanent marker before only the 800.

@@RoysRocks Let's hope you can skip it 🙂 Maybe let the manufacory know, wierd they did'nt stick to the brown for the last grit 🤔🤷‍♀️

Max audio is set at -1dB from clipping so sounds like the phone might be nearing end of life. Google pixel 7 pro going really well for me and a really good camera to shoot some opal!
