A few thoughts on carving designs, aesthetics and function. These days i tend to prefer function over form but that's not to say you can't carve a really good looking piece in a rustic fashion.

congratulations on the channel! I'm new in woodworking, and I find your videos very useful and really interesting, the information is very clear and precise. I found your products very beautiful and your techniques efficient and effective, as well as useful information on equipment. And the videos themselves are perfect. Thanks, great work! Greetings from Italy...

I appreciate your point of view. I get it when you say you go where the wood takes you. It is not cliche'. Once I pick up a piece of wood I have an idea in my mind where I want to go with it. I just start taking away the wood to get there. Sometimes its not exactly where I want. The wood tells me. One thing I don't do, yet, is use a pattern. If I ever do a series where they are to be somewhat the same I may. But in the meantime each is unique. Good job!

I would agree with most of that except the patterns. I have several spoon templates, sometime I use, sometimes I dont, I also mix and match the bowl from one template with the handle of other. I try not to be too rigid on design. As you say sometimes you just go with the wood
