I'm doing a fairly shallow base relief carving here. These ivory grips are relatively thin, so we don't want to take too much material off of them. For this type of project I prefer hand tools to power tools., for the better control.

Hello Jack, l hope you’re doing well. I’m having fun now, KZfaq has made it possible for me to upload directly from my album. Not as good as the big videos that Max and I do but at least I can keep little ones coming at a more steady rate. Thanks for being there for us!

What a great series! I’ve been using your technique’s on a powder horn I’m working on and if anything I’m learning to take my time with scrimshaw

That’s awesome Roosterrun! Nothing makes me happier than hearing from a new scrimshander! I will say that the walking engraving technique doesn’t work very well with horn but the rest does pretty good. You’re better to cut your lines with a little knife ( horn is so fibrous). I would love to see your progress.

Using the hand tool over the power one makes it easier to stop at borders especially in soft materials.

You’re right about that, a small slip can leave you with a big problem using a power tool.

Thank you for the video Brian , beautiful work . When you mentioned how thin the ivory is, I wondered if it would benifit from being stabilized with epoxy of if the ivory would even accept anything like that. Have a great day.

Thank you very much Rich! Actually the ivory is quite tough stuff and can take a beating, but if I thinned it out too much it could crack from the shock when fired.
