I just got my first OCC knife, 1 7/8" roughing knife. Sharp out of the box. It cuts pretty much the same as my sharpened and honed Flexcut. The handle is a bit longer and that gives a little more leverage. I like the shape of the handle better than I expected. From what I've read, it should hold it's edge well. Paid about $25 + shipping. Pleased with it.

Well, I can tell you that I use my 1-1/2" and 1-3/4" knives the most. Every now and then, I will use my 2" and 3/4" knives but about 95% of my carvings have been done with the knife size used in this video to make the little carving for the demo. So, pick up a knife between 1-1/2" and 2 inches as well as a knife around 1" and you should have just about everything covered for most carving projects.

Hey Brian, I asked a video or so ago if you'd review an old timer knife. Just forget about that knife and if you decide to do an old style knife look at the eight dollar imperial jackmaster on amazon. It is a Barlow as well but its really cheap and made of soft stainless steel but definitely a good knife to pass to a child.

I saw that one, just worry about how long the cutting edge will last for whittling.

Hello, from the OCC brand what would you choose (and how many) for the best accuracy and tiny details (small figurines, facial features, etc)? I'd like to buy 2, or maybe 3 or 4 OCC knives and can't decide. "1 - 7/8", "1 - 1/2", "miny detail", "1 - 3/4"? All of them? Thanks!

Howdy! I personally own the following OCC knives and it covers every single whittling need I have: 1 - 7/8" blade for roughing 1 - 1/2" blade for general carving 1" detail blade for small cuts You could also just grab the 1 - 3/4" blade for a good all around whittling knife and maybe a 1" detail knife for the small cuts.

For any brand or just OCC? For me I primarily use my OCC 1-7/8" knife, OCC 1-3/8" detail knife, Helvie Detail knife, and my Flexcut stub sloyd.

Not anymore. I'm not a knife collector and don't like it when I have tools sitting around and not being used. I usually pass them along to friends and family or trade them off to find something more my speed. In this case, I traded mine out to be able to afford some new knives to test out.

I like using blades between 1.5 and 1.75 inches in length for general whittling. Handle design is up to you but the larger handles fit my hand better.

I use them for cherry and walnut all the time. But if you want some really nice higher end carving tools Deepwoods Ventures is a wonderful option. The blades are a bit thicker and hold up to harder woods

I have some purple heart that I have been playing around with as well! The OCC knives handle it well enough but take frequent stropping breaks to keep them sharp!

I mainly use thicker knives with a edge angle between 15 and 20 degrees. Sloyd knives are also a great option for removing large chunks of wood.
