CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Captain Renault (Claude Rains) tells Rick (Humphrey Bogart) about Victor Laszlo and his female companion, and warns him about helping them.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
One of the most beloved American films, this captivating wartime adventure of romance and intrigue from director Michael Curtiz defies standard categorization. Simply put, it is the story of Rick Blaine (Humphrey Bogart), a world-weary ex-freedom fighter who runs a nightclub in Casablanca during the early part of WWII. Despite pressure from the local authorities, notably the crafty Capt. Renault (Claude Rains), Rick's cafà (C) has become a haven for refugees looking to purchase illicit letters of transit which will allow them to escape to America. One day, to Rick's great surprise, he is approached by the famed rebel Victor Laszlo (Paul Henreid) and his wife, Ilsa (Ingrid Bergman), Rick's true love who deserted him when the Nazis invaded Paris. She still wants Victor to escape to America, but now that she's renewed her love for Rick, she wants to stay behind in Casablanca. "You must do the thinking for both of us," she says to Rick. He does, and his plan brings the story to its satisfyingly logical, if not entirely happy, conclusion.

One of Bogart's gifts is that he knew how to share the screen, to be self-effacing and not distract from the actors he was working with. The scenes with Greenstreet, Lorre, Rains. Obviously they are great actors, and Bogart knew how to get out of their way and let them shine without distraction.

The studio system sort of demanded it but I agree, you could see the same actors working together well. My Ex Wife used to love my Greenstreet impressions.

How is it that with the burning charisma of the 2 leads, in the most romantic film of them all, the comedy relief STEALS the show. Casablanca is Louis' movie. He gets all the best lines.

The contrast between what Captain says to Rick and later what Lazlo says to Rick is very telling regarding Rick's past. Rick cynically says he got "well paid" for aiding the fights against fascists in Spain and Italy. He tells Lazlo the same thing but Renault responds "The winning side would have paid you much better", whereas Lazlo responds "Isn't it strange that you always fight on the side of the underdog?".

The irony in your statement, even 11 years later, is that Rick may SAY that but he does exactly the opposite by helping Lazlo and the woman escape. He knows full well he'll most likely run afoul of the Germans, barring a miracle, and yet he goes ahead. He does the same thing when he helps the young man at the roulette wheel so that he and his fiance can get their exit visas and leave. The only person he didn't stick his neck out for was Peter Lorre's character, and it can be argued that he didn't because Lorre's character was a self-interested, murdering toad. By your statement alone, you're nothing like Rick, no matter how you may claim you 'feel.' More likely you're just another in a long line of people looking for a way to justify being selfish and/or self-centered. I stick my neck out for people or for causes - but they have to be worthwhile, not just the cause du jour, as it were, or the latest thing to be outraged over - in that regard, much like Rick's character.
