Biopharmaceutical downstream processing (DSP) refers to the recovery and purification of a molecule of interest from the host cells. In this follow up video of our "Introduction to Downstream processing for bioreactors", I go through this process for production of monoclonal antibodies (MAbs) in bioreactors. There are over 500 MAbs approved for therapeutic purposes and scale up of the technology will be necessary to meet future demands.
This video will cover trends in DSP, how stability of the antibodies affect your choice of operating units for DSP, the general process, and give more details on protein A affinity chromatography. Finally, I will talk about what quality control parameters are important to consider based on WHO standards. In the playlist "Course: Downstream processing in the pharmaceutical industry", I will go over some case studies and discuss certain unit operations in more detail.
