He doesnt have nice eyes anyways to be honest. His eyes always tell the story of a man who gets little sleep but it looks more like he had just seen a man die in his arms as he stole his last breath from a gentle kiss.

He explains it several times. It's so that he can watch the camera monitor, to check framing and composition etc, without looking distracted. It's also now become his trademark / look now. Part of the brand.

That's the biggest part that makes him stand beyond his imitators is his work ethic, and I'm glad you mentioned that. The guy barely gets a minute to himself. His life is a constant rush and to be honest, as much as I value my own work ethic, I wouldn't like to have the brutality of his.

THANK YOU so much for this video. People do not understand what makes casey so popular. Everyone wants to imitate the things that he does. (ride boosted boards, fly drones, etc). But he isn't revolutionary for WHAT he does., but HOW he does it. HOW he edits, HOW he tells stories. Casey should inspire people to BE DIFFERENT. Instead, he has inspired thousands of people to copy what he does. I have been watching casey for five years now, and he has inspired me to find my own voice. NOT to be a carbon copy.

This video was the first, real, proper introduction to his work I can see the appeal. He really is a master since he was the first person to combine two art forms: The Vlog, with expert camera technique. A master makes what they do look simple, but there is a strong foundation of skill beneath that many miss. People want to live the highlights of his life, but not put in the time and effort to earn that success. It's why they don't get the same views.
@TheCVK01

Agree! I love when Casey does a shot/edits in a way i would have too in that situation, but to be completely authentic, i would never do what he does the way he does it. There has to be uniqueness in what you do creatively because when it comes to techniques and angles etc, nothing is new under the sun. Everybody can fly a drone, and set up a shot, but it takes your own creativity to do something that's not been done before.
@Reilly5
@Reilly5 8 жыл бұрын
I'd say that people know on some level why a thing is fascinating or unique, but can't consciously say why. Such as PokemonGo. It takes something familiar and places it in a new style (Geocaching) on an a device that is common. It also fixes problems that many free to play games have that turn people away with micropayments by removing the pay for success model, and having the items for sale an option to the user. A direct copy would be identified in an instant, and people would return to the original creator. Because the original creator has shown a level of skill, and perked your curiosity via novelty. That novelty wears off over time, and exposure due to how dopamine works. In a survival sense, this is a good thing because constant dopamine dose would stop you from doing anything and you'd die. For creative work, this forces the artist to survive by pushing their knowledge and work ahead to get noticed.

well not everybody wants to be original, he did inspire those who wanted to be m, and they knew him before he became so popular...and he did inspired me, I can remeber omit was about early in 2013 I found his movies and I watched all other until 4 am, I was trilled, if I would discover vlogs now I could watch max 3, there is acually no story to tell, no thopic, it's just his life...before you could leave him on deseted island and he would make interesting deep movie about something...nowdays it's just about him. I mean I dont need to watch it, but for selfish reason I miss those old videos that didnt have that popularity

You're talented enough brother. In fact on a few of your videos, you have mastered Casey's style. I know when I start in a couple of weeks my style of video will be on par with caseys. THe biggest thing like the great one himself has said, is story. You've got to build towarads something. But my problem is, even with trying to start a successful startup, how can one do this while working an 8-5. Casey has a slight advantage over most of us because he's been blessed to officially be funded and have pre-exisiting capital. But my mind is free, ive got the equipment, I want to see how far I can take my channel, AnimeBusters and build a story around it.

i give casey full credit for his work ethic and stylr. but the veneer of amateurism is very thin and to use it to somehow sentimentally elevate his work is misguided and misinformative. not every amateur can enter the field with the kind of gears that casey's able to have access to. or the locations he has access to. $$$ the limits to access isn't democratized the way we think it is or hope it to be truly amateur. i dont see why we cant call casey a complete professional utilizing an amateur Style instead of romanticizing it as Form.

The equipment I really don't think is the issue. His true genius is in the planning, most vlogs are amateurish because there is no planning. Casey has a plan, he knows the shots, he knows the basic content of each video. If people spent more time planning and less time worrying about equipment their content would be better. Casey simply has lots of skill at planning content, planning the shot, and editing. Those things come with lots of practice. Yes and sometimes life happens while you're planning and you can get awesome content too.

Apologies in advance if I misunderstood something... but isn't that exactly what this video was saying? "there is nothing amateurish about" Casey, except the 'style' of the videos, which nerdwriter goes on to explain that the lack of corporate influence and polish is what makes 'daily vlogs' successful on youtube. Think your point and this video are trying to communicate the exact same things!

I watch Casey's vlogs because he does a lot of interesting things and I really enjoyed watching them when he was creating Beme because it was interesting to see someone run a business. Beme failed, but his vlogs took off and it amazes me how much work and detail he puts into his work every day. His vlogs aren't the typical boring watching someone's life, Casey really makes a movie everyday.

This video was great. Very well edited and explained beautifully. 4:07 "I've never wanted to Share all the intimacies of my life" lol that pretty much summarizes MY vlogs. You could say my vlogs are the polar opposite of Casey's when it comes to production value haha. Ironically, he's what inspired me to start Vlogging. Again, great video I completely agree with everything.

Thought the same and was pretty curious about it. Because there is not much to "expose" him for. He does his videos they are pretty good he works hard on them he is not a bad person and does not try to create any drama with anyone, the only thing that you might not like about him is some of his opinions on stuff, as his political video which I completely disagreed. There is not much more to say about him, he is pretty open about stuff in his videos and all.

The thing that makes Casey's vlogs so special seems to be the way he subconsciously portrays the hard work that goes into his vlogs. All his viewers can tell that he's put huge levels of efforts into each video yet they don't see this work directly. This is part of the beauty of his vlogs and the reason he's been able to create a new, special format of vlogs other creators can only dream of.

I'm really only familiar with his vlog work and I'm a fan. What was it about the pre-vlog work that you liked? I think those works seem better because they were few and far between, and also developed and polished with the help of time. You can't really compare a video edited in 2-3 hours, to a video that's been edited and re-edited and color corrected and has been allowed breathing room and fresh sets of eyes to weigh in. Not all of his daily vlogs are hits, I agree, but there's a lot of awesome stuff in there, despite the rushed execution.
@borohhh
@borohhh 8 жыл бұрын
Laura Frances I can, and am comparing them. It's not a matter of colour correction or extremely cautious editing, if you have followed Neistat for a long enough time, you should know that the guy believes ideas and stories are what's truly important. Vlogs are vacuous and lack substance in general, his vlogs are the better of the bunch, but they are still just that, vlogs. His older movies showed clever ideas executed with a unique style that was completely his own making. But hey, if that's what he's into now, good for him. I just don't like the attitude of his fan base at the moment, and feel somewhat alienated. I just see his previous format as the superior material.
@lauraaguirre7467
@lauraaguirre7467 8 жыл бұрын
I wasn't saying you couldn't compare them if that's what you wanted to. You can obviously do whatever you want. I only meant that comparing these two things would be unfair because they're different things, undergone through different processes. It's like comparing a bird to a fish and saying the bird is better for not being able to fly, when fishes are not suppose to fly. I have followed Neistat since before the vlogs and those early videos where the hook. They're awesome and deeper and yes, better! So I agree with you there. But I guess you also do agree that his vlogs are the better of the bunch, and that's what I believe too. I'm not a huge fan of vlogs in general, but his, his i love.

This video was my introduction to Casey's work, about two months ago. Coming back to it after having watched dozens of his vlogs, it really seems like you got the essence of it. I would only add that there's a fortuitous coincidence between Casey's personality (which you define as what makes the show un-copyable) and the medium (to which he brings such freshness) - he moves at the pace that the KZfaq platform requires, heck, he almost demands that everything around him pick up the pace. It's not just an individual who understands how the mechanisms of this new form of video-making work, but someone who uses these mechanisms as tools to push the medium itself (and we've all seen his philosophy on tools). Give the man a smoothy, to go.

This is superb! I appreciate how you've described what actually goes on behind the scenes of Casey Neistat's videos. The work of video editors is supposed to be invisible but, because of that, it's often overlooked and unappreciated.

TLDR Casey is a professional cameraman but his style is amateurism

With a theme of democratization of media sprinkled in, nothing you have to watch the video to get or anything

Could you explain what you mean by "theme of democratization of media"? It sounds interesting, but I'm not the sharpest blade in the knifeholder.

democratization, as in, anyone can make it, ranging from a DIY approach to a fully funded production

I'd say his style is beyond professional. Calling it amateur doesn't sit right knowing the amount of hours he has spent perfecting his craft while going against the grain. He's iconic.

Often times on KZfaq I find myself dumbed-down or drained. This time a feel a little smarter and bit more enlightened. Nice work! Subbed.

Neistat is a G-rated, family friendly version of Dan Bilzerian. It's just Aspirational Wealth Porn for the KZfaq crowd. I mean, I'm not trying to shit on the guy--I subscribe to his channel. But I think you're reaching a bit when you call what he does "art."

Dan Bilzerian is practically pornography. I don't believe there should be validation in art either. it is simply subjective. it is humanity's only pure creation.
