Cassettes are analog right? Not with DCC!
One correction: My full size deck is an OPTIMUS, not Realistic. Now restored to working condition, this portable digital powerhouse made its debut in 1992-93 and most people haven't even heard of it! Now you can see and hear it here!

I remember my dad was always talking about DCC for some time in the 90s. At that time he was working for Philips military equipment and they had a Shop full of philips electronics at (way) lower than retail prices for the employees. Was a great time, we never had a DCC deck though.

As far as I can remember this excellent audio format never made it to South Africa. What a shame. I belief Philips also had a car unit. Imagine with a good library of prerecorded DCC tapes it would have been a real treat for my hearing senses.

Good job on the repair. I have a Panasonic RQ-DP7 that appears to be identical to your Philips. It works perfectly and will even run on the original battery for a few minutes. I've contemplated building a new battery pack but finding the right sized cells could be a problem. I have all the accessories for it such as the power supply, carrying case and headphones. Of course, the foam earpieces have rotted away but the phones aren't too uncomfortable just being "naked." Just gave it a test listen, still runs on the battery, volume control is a bit scratchy but that's no big deal. Perhaps I will make a video of my unit and of my Optimus DCT-2000 very soon.

The tapes actually have more (not less) dynamic range, because DCC allows 18bit resolution. Especially some of the pre-recorded DCCs make very good use of this. Additionally, some pre-recorded tapes use 48kHz. Also it seems that PASC solves some aliasing problems found in the CD lowpas filtering.

For your comment about CD's towards the end, I seen a video on this, there was an early CD album that a dude had, and he bought the 25 year anniversary rerelease, he compared the two, the newer one is what suffered from the issues you mentioned, older one did not, and this was the case regardless of CD players. So you really can't blame CD too much as making it sound like that has been common practice for years now, sounds worse but "everyone wants louder" meant they did it, the DCC died off before this change occurred
@philpem
@philpem 7 жыл бұрын
I was just thinking the same thing. Overcompressed audio... some modern CDs really do sound awful compared to the older, properly-mastered ones. As you say, the "war of loudness" ended, and in most cases... "louder" won.

I totally agree with you regarding the sound of the Philips DCC system. The sound has a warmth and brilliance it is hard to describe unless you have heard it yourself. You summed it up by saying analogue sound. CDs by comparison sound harsh and metallic if that makes sense! DCC just has much more listening pleasure and attack and sound more like a high quality 12" single. I bought two of these players (DCC 600 and DCC 130) when they started to be discounted heavily in the UK. Still have them and they still sound superb!

I have known people who believe a JPEG can look better than a TIFF image. Someone I knew in the late 90's was adamant that CD-R's "for music" sounded better than normal CD-R's. It's just the complete lack of understanding of how these things work. It's the same people that swear that there is no audible difference between the original CD track and an mp3 version of the same track.
@cwaldrip
@cwaldrip 8 жыл бұрын
The brashness of most CDs (and MP3s) is more to the audio production values. Music producers are constantly cranking up the audio levels to give their music more punch. Louder has to be better, right? *facepalm* And basically just annoying anyone interested in the quality of the music (save the obligatory analog v. digital quality arguments).
@neodonkey
@neodonkey 7 жыл бұрын
This is true. Mastering is appalling now. Look at the levels of any moderns stuff and it has no dynamic range and is clipping constantly. Play some 80s stuff on your vinyl and "oh, hello my old friend dynamic range". CDs can be mastered like this too.
@linoxyard
@linoxyard 5 жыл бұрын
My thoughts exactly. The compress the crap out of music on CDs to make them louder. This obviously makes them harsh and takes the life away out of any song. If they only preserved the true dynamic range of the original music, it would sound a whole lot better. They even compress CLASSICAL music on cd, a type of music which needs good dynamic range in order to be appreciated fully. That's just awful

I'm kind of curious what a DCC tape would sound like if you transfered the tape reels into a regular audio cassette housing and played it on an audio cassette player. I'm guessing it might sound like white noise and/or a dialup modem.
@ralfandreakkd4368
@ralfandreakkd4368 5 жыл бұрын
Not exactly, it's much louder so it may damage your ears or loudspeaker if you don't turn down the volume. How do I know? I prepared a regular audio cassette for recording like a digital tape by drilling two holes in it. The holes are to notice if it's a dcc or an analog cassette. Curiously I played the prepared cassettes in an analog cassette player. It nearly destroyed my loudspeaker, my ears and it was so loud that I might have had a heart attack. Btw. it failed because a dcc has more contact pressure to the recording head than a regular cassette by using some extra mechanics. The regular cassette had too much drop outs. I only used it for a couple of month because it started destroying the tapes and I switched to Mini Disc.

@Solitaire001
@Solitaire001 5 жыл бұрын
@@tookitogo True. DCC has a total of 18 tracks (nine for each side). Eight of the tracks are for audio (the data is split up among the eight tracks to allow for digital storage with a tape moving at standard cassette speed), and the ninth track is for data (such as metadata).

Very nice! I have 3 DCC decks but whenever I see a portable one on eBay they seem to go for a lot of money. The better sound compared to mini disc may be because the DCC format uses 18 bit instead of the more common 16 bit used on Cd's and Md's. Have you heard of the Sony nt-1 and nt-2? Very interesting format.

@databits
@databits 9 жыл бұрын
Daniel DeMayo The sound format was initially a 1:4 compressed 16bit format @ 44.1KHz and later a 18bit format at the same sampling rate, and although all DCC recorders allowed for recording and playback of 48kHz and 32kHz, most units did not have A/D or sampling rate converters capable of using those - so recording of 48 and 32 kHz was usually only possible via the digital inputs... if the original material demanded it.

The format is brilliant until the caps dry up or leak, actually MDisc will not stand vibration very well and just jumps and skips and it turns out that the Phillips system is better as vibrations don't effect it, "MARLINA WATCHES FROM THE WALL" is the best track on that DCC tape BTW have you got the Vanessa Parades DCC Tape.

I used a Minidisc daily for several years - maybe the early players were bad for skipping, but the almost stupidly long skip buffer and "high speed pre-read" in the later players (NetMD era and HiMD) certainly helped.

DAVID GREGORY KERR If a MiniDisc player was skipping, then it or the disc was severely compromised. I used MD for years and other than vigorously shaking it for 20+ seconds at a time to artificially induce skipping, I literally never once experienced skipping.

I think it was a case of a potentially good format introduced at the wrong time. I think it might have met with more success if it had been introduced instead of the Compact Disc. I think what ultimately doomed DCC was the following: - Introduction of affordable recordable compact discs. - Introduction of Minidisc - Although it was a significant improvement over the compact cassette, it was also possible to get excellent results via the use of metal tapes.
