A very laborious restoration process this one. The patience was incredible with all that tiny screws etc. A job well done Dr DCC. Patience here was executed to perfection. A valuable lesson for me 😉

Great that you brought the last portable home and in full restoration!! Thanks

"We do not know what to expect". Later: Opens the case with ease, know every screw it's place/origin. :-D But man, you need to desolder a board to replace the belts, madness!

You've taken one apart before! The speed that you found the screws and knew the procedure.

As you know, I opened and closed the five portable recorders in my collection quite a few times recently so I've gotten quite familiar with all the details. The Panasonic really is exactly the same as the 170 except for the front panel. Also every time I disassemble or reassemble one of these (or see someone else do it) I get more and more aware and annoyed at the glaringly obvious design flaws. It's so easy to destroy a portable if you miss tiny details like switch alignment, or if you make the wrong movement while you take it apart or put it back together.

It is not service friendly when opening the first time. Happened to me as well (but that was 107 devices ago.....)

How were they expecting people to change the belts if you have to desolder the motor, and Solenoid? That's crazy!
@DRDCC5 жыл бұрын
I agree.Not service friendly at all.
@XMguy5 жыл бұрын
DR DCC was the motor, tape sensor, and solenoid able to be left soldered in place and still change the belts, or was this the only way? If the latter, definitely not service friendly!

@@XMguy This is the only way.

DR DCC that's a shame. Phillips should have thought the belts would have to be replaced. Hmm. Perhaps they considered it a throw away item. Sad.
@roasthunter4 жыл бұрын
@@XMguy this kind of device really was a throw away item, they last 10 years then get replaced with a new one, why spend valuable time trying to make it service friendly if you design it to last what is considered an acceptable life and then you can sell another product. Only a small number of dedicated people like this will do repair items like this.

Dr DCC do you have a video on how to replace a pinch roller on a philips DCC 730? 🤔 Peace ✌️ out people
@UberSynth5 жыл бұрын
It's OK. I worked out. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/oJuHidqA2LW6eZ8.html

Surrinder J The solution is not always going to be permanent. It is better to replace the pinch rollers eventually.
@UberSynth5 жыл бұрын
@@DRDCC I couldn't find a video where someone removed the DCC pinch rollers. I saw someone else had the same problem with side B on the philips DCC 730. I worked it out after taking off the cover, you can easily remove the upper portion of the cassette caddy mechanism to access the pinch rollers. They just snap in and out at the spindles. Before I took it out, I marked where the slight bump was with a penthen treated that area surface with some sand paper. It worked perfectly. The pinch roller seam good they just needed that slight sanding to make them smooth again after years of use. Peace ✌️ out people

That constant background music is rather annoying when listening on headphones. I would rather listen to your voice instead. Very good video though. I like these miniature audio tape recorders.

LiveSteamMad Have to agree...especially on a 20+ minute video. But other than that beautiful content as usual.

Thanks for the feedback. Would you rather have no music on longer video's or just softer in the background?
@LiveSteamMad5 жыл бұрын
@@DRDCC No music works best I persoally feel, like for example KZfaq user "12VoltVids" that you may be familiar with (the guy in Canada who repairs A/V equipment and has a nice relaxing narration instead of music), I enjoy hearing the person's voice and explanations and things where I learn something.

Why do you not recommend playing analog tapes on a DCC machine?
@DRDCC5 жыл бұрын
The shedding of regular analog tape on the thin film head in any dcc player is just asking for problems. DCC playback is heavily affected because of it and it would require constant cleaning.
@XMguy5 жыл бұрын
DR DCC How so? I thought the medium of DCC was metal type tape? I figured analog playback would be considered when making these players for backwards compatibility.
@DRDCC5 жыл бұрын
Nate Newman DCC uses Basf Chrome Videotape. It is backwards compatible, but older analog tapes are dirty and you would need to clean the head constantly. Since you have remove the cover every time, it is just not wise and can damage the head potentially.

@@DRDCC Back in the days I even modified normal tape so that it was recognized as DCC tape to save some money :). Just replaced my belt also (in my old DCC170). The joys of early adaptors. The main plus against minidisc back in the days was that it did not skip when jogging and the quality was supposed to be better.
