I was driving across the country and took a 2 hour detour in Texas just to stand at the crossroads location. The roads stretch as far as you can see in every direction. No traffic. No noise except for the wind. It felt like the center of the universe. Like…this is where everyone’s journey starts.
@OfficialMediaKnights

Wow... What a comment! We can only imagine what that must feel like. It gives you the feeling that you truly may go wherever you want to. The visual representation of the crossroads also gave this movie a subtle but optimistic approach. He is free from his old life - and though it is painful and he lost so much, he can choose how to live it on his own terms and on his own time!

44:05 The implication is that he went after the woman in the truck. She is the other person who was on the island with him. Even though he didn't know her. Her symbol with the wings became very important to him. Also, we know some important things about her that show she's available. At the beginning of the movie, that sign didn't just have her name on it. It also had her husband's name on it. Now it's gone. Because we saw at the beginng, when we were following her package that she sent to her husband, that he was cheating on her. So, she's newly divorced, Chuck has nowhere else to go, and her symbol helped to keep him going on that island as much as Kelly's photo. He looks in the last shot at the direction her truck drove off and he smiles. She's what the tide brought in.

9:18 The funny thing is that as bleak as his situation is at this point, he's EXTREMELY lucky. Not only did he survive the initial crash, he also secured a lifeboat and avoided not just the engine exploding but also miraculously, every piece of shrapnel from that explosion.

On the DVD commentaries the director says he went to a desert beach to actuallly find out how to survive (he even had to figure out how to make fire) and several days in his experiment he found this old volleyball and started talkig to the ball because he felt lonely. And that´s how Wilson came to be in the movie... the ball was not in the original script.

Another cool titibit is that for the entire duration of his stay on the island that they show during the movie, there is no music at all... until Chuck successfully escapes the island and looks back at the place he spent 4 years on. I love the score of this movie.
@OfficialMediaKnights
@OfficialMediaKnights Жыл бұрын
Yes!!! The lack of score and the choice in filling our senses with what Chuck hears (the sounds of the island) helped put the audience in his shoes and really increase the feeling of isolation!! So many fantastic choices in this movie that truly elevated the story! What a joy to watch!!

Somehing I love about this movie is how many scenes there are shot at seemingly "nothing", and often for several seconds at a time. There are a lot of "filler scenes" where initially it seems like nothing is going on, and that those scenes were shot just to make the movie longer, when in reality they're in the movie to put emphasis on situations and create the atmosphere that the character is experiencing. Those scenes that last like 5 to 8 seconds of just nature really emphasize how alone Chuck is, and that he really is at the mercy of nature. More movies today should do the same, instead of just filling it with action every second. Perspective and immersion creates phenomenal masterpieces, and Cast Away is one of them.

I remember when this movie came out it broke me. I was in the midst of losing so much and everything was falling apart. I had had too much and I tried to remember that I had to keep breathing and the sun will rise. I recall someone telling me they thought it was a bit much tha the was so upset over losing Wilson and that it was just a volleyball. I told them it wasn't about losing a ball, it was the pent up grief and fear and loss of the past four years, of being alone, of the trauma he had lived and his last tangible piece of stability was lost and he could do nothing to save Wilson. Sometimes you lose people. He was breaking down over everything that he had been holding and here is was in the middle of the ocean alone, with just a glimmer of hope that he would not die out there alone. That is how life feels for me most of the time. I'm out here in the middle of an ocean, lost, with no love in sight, with a sliver of a chance that I will survive this. This movie is heavy in so many ways. 😥

I really wish they'd make a sequel to this and follow up on how Chuck's life changed and moved on from his experience. I'm sure I'm not going to be the first one to say this here, but my heart breaks for Hanks's character every time I see him yell out to Wilson "I'm sorry!", as if somehow he was abandoning his best friend in the world. I just found your channel and love your reactions. I don't how long after a reaction after you read the comments, but that was actually Fred Smith, the CEO of FEDEX making the speech about welcoming him home. A little true story about Fred Smith the CEO of FedEx. He was doing his Master's Degree at Harvard and his thesis was about making an airline to carry packages. His Professor was one of the academics that has never been in the real world and gave a very low grade on the thesis and told Fred his idea would never work. Fred Smith found some investors and bought about a dozen French-made private jets, had the seats taken out, reinforced the floors, take the windows out of the planes, and covered the windows, and started a company called Federal Express. The rest is history. Just a little back story about Fed-Ex.

Even though this movie ended with no real solution for Chuck, I like to believe that he finally decided to "Go get the girl." At the beginning of the movie, she shipped a package, and when the FedEx driver showed up, you could see the names on the gate arch over her driveway. It evidently had her and her husband's name on it ..... "Dick" and "Bettina." However, when Chuck shows up to finally deliver the package at the end of the movie, the "Dick" is gone (pun intended) and it only says "Bettina." This leads one to believe that in the four intervening years, she divorced her husband and got the ranch in the settlement. Thus, just like Chuck, she was available too. I like to think he went after her, they both found love again, and they lived happily ever after!

When this movie came out I was going thru some very difficult time in my life. A few months ( 1999) before this movie came out life and decisions came between the woman that I love, my soul mate. She had to leave NY and go to start her life in Italy. We kept calling and talking to each other from time to time. But in time she had moved on with her life and got marry. After she got marry I kind of stop talking to her and let her be! But we still kept in touch and from time to time talk but only as friends. Years and year pass by and she once came back to NY to visit her dad and brothers. The first time that we saw each other for the first time after all those years was unforgettable, magical, sad and extremely happy. We clearly saw in each other the love that we still felt after all those years and after moving on with our lifes! ……. We had a very similar moment….She told me “ I love you!” I have always love you! You are my soul mate and the love of my life! ( and many other things ) I felt so happy, so relieved and sad so sad! I told her I love her that I love her too and never stopped loving her, but she is marry now and we can’t do anything. It’s bitter sweet! To know that the love of your life, your soul mate loves u just like u love her bit at the same time can’t be together because of the decisions that u made in the past! This movie reminded us of our love, of the past, and of how fragile life is that one good, bad, decision or action can choose the outcome of the future. My life, my love story is a movie! If I wrote my story and publish a book I’m 100% sure that I would get a movie deal! But I am kind of lazy tho write it! Whatever u just read is not even 10% of my entire story, all I’m going through say is that there are many things that can look for to show you when a person is the real deal “ Soulmate “ 95% of people miss used this word!

When I first saw this movie I had to keep reminding myself that it wasn't a horror movie. Because I was like "there's something dangerous in that cave" or "oh no he's bleeding in the water!" Now, it's actually kind of a comfort film for me. Something about the sound of the waves and the quiet. And then the sense of utter freedom at the end. The timing of him ripping off the bandaid and the rush of air in the plane is absolutely perfect and catches you off guard. Due to being solely focused on the bandaid and nothing else as you wait to see the cut damage.

Yesss!!! The way they lingered on that moment, only to bamboozle us later was such a smart editing and cinematography choice - you get caught off guard the same way Chuck does!!

I always interpreted the dentist husband's actions at the hub as him attempting to keep Kelly from seeing Chuck out of jealousy, knowing he can't possibly compete with her long-lost love. And then, at the very end, it looks like Chuck is thinking about going back to that farm (which had the second name cut off the sign) to say hello, talk about the package, maybe make a friend, and possibly more.

There was an absolutely hysterical Superbowl commercial that year spoofing the end of this movie. They had Tom Hanks's character be like "just curious, what was in that package after all?" and the lady cracked it open & started pulling stuff out like "let's see-- waterproof matches, flare gun, satellite phone..."

Hanks was nominated for another best actor oscar for this role. If I had to choose between this or Forrest Gump, I think I'd rather him of won for this movie tbh. He's a damn national treasure.

Fun fact: Tom Hanks did make the fire as wee see, and the reaction "Fire" was not scripted 🙂 - also, he did lose a lot of weight midt movie for the role. Thanks for another great video 🥰

Hey Ari and Denise, CAstways shows we all need that human connection with another living creature. -------- And when that is absent we invent one in our imagination. ---------- People in the wilderness reach out to wild animals and make them pets for companions. Tom Hanks only had Wilson. --------- So when Wilson floats away, it's like a gut punch we feel his desperation, such a clever way to tap into the human psyche

This is a great breakdown, absolutely agreed! The claustrophobic loneliness he endured forced him to find some kind of coping mechanism, and it's truly worth thinking about, the lengths we have to go through to survive!

If I remember correctly from what I've heard from others, Tom Hanks didn't want to fake making fire. He spent a fair bit of time actually trying to make fire without faking it so, when it happened, he would have a more authentic reaction.

I saw this in theaters when I was a kid. My mother took me on Saturday afternoon. It was so good; we came back Synday evening for another watch. Just amazing; those scenes atop the cliff and the wide shots on the beach; the crash sequence and the lake of fire. It was an experience.

@@OfficialMediaKnights I saw the original Star Wars Trilogy in theaters, as well. My mother was a major movie buff; so I got to see so many good films. When they first digitally remastered Star Wars IV, V and VI; they re-released all three in theaters. Mom took me to each film twice. Now, when I tell you that was amazing; there's still no words for how good they were on the big screen. Pretty sure they will never be topped. [ unrelated ]The only recent film that blew me away in theaters was Don't Breathe. That was A BLAST! What all films were best for you in theaters?

I read somethig in the Trivia on IMDb. During all the time he was stranded on the island you couldn´t hear any music at all. The sad music starts when he finaly manage to escape the island. The reason behind was so the audience really could hear what he heard and feel what he felt. Because IRL you don´t have a theme music. I never thought about that until I red about it and it´s very powerful and briliant.

I love how calm and focused he is after that 4 year jump forward. He doesn't fidget or shift uncomfortably. He moves deliberately and takes his time with each thought and action. It's a nice reminder that this modern world is full of distractions that keep us needlessly on edge.

That tiny island in the South Pacific had been visited perhaps a total of three times in human history. Just think of it. Two sailing ships two centuries apart, then a survey team in World War 2 for about fifteen minutes found the place useless as a base, then this castaway in the nineties for four years, then a single scientific visit afterwards. In the largest area of water on the planet. Try turning a model globe to look at only the South Pacific Ocean. From that side of the Earth, there's hardly any land at all on half the world. He could not have been more alone if he'd tried. Probably only the Command Module Pilots of the Apollo missions have been more alone above the far side of the Moon.
Please be kind🙏
