I set my nieces up with sets, I gave them a #3, #5 and #8 skillet, a dutch oven, a chicken fryer and a corn stick pan. What can I say, the herd needed some thinning. :)

Nice video presentation on starter sets! I always enjoy the tid bits of information you provide and learn something new with each video you do. 😊. I will be reordering some Easy Beezy soon, but held off due to the postal delays. I’m just about out with an order of two sticks in early August! Keep the videos coming. I picked up 2 more BS&R pieces today (I think) while out sourcing. I will be sharing it on my next video.

There is nothing better for baking biscuits than a No 8 griddle. Absolutely perfect for 8-10 biscuits. I agree about the No 8 skillet being the foundation piece for any collection. If i could only have one piece of CI, it would be a 10" skillet, and I want a heavy one. I think the retail price on a Lodge 10" skillet is about $18.00. that is the best money ever spent in the kitchen.

I agree Stephen. Those are the three pieces are really great choices but I would change the griddle for a loaf pan. We have several of the griddles but don't use them very often. We use the loaf pan more often when baking fresh bread and have even made some small casserole dishes in them. Hope you and the family had a Merry Christmas and wishing you a Happy and Healthy New year.

HI Stephen, New years greetings from Canada, thanks so much for the great videos , I agree that a griddle is a "more useful than most realize" piece. About a year ago I bought a modern Lodge 12 in square griddle and I now use it more than my skillets. It is the star of breakfasts, hash browns, pancakes, eggs and meats, but I also sear a lot of my meats and sauté vegies on it . I use it over my square copper heat diffuser that helps with even heating but also it is nice to be able to do a first dish on the center and then move off to the corners to keep warm while you do the second cook on the hotter center , Like Steak with mushroom's and onions on the side. And thanks for the Easy Beezy , A great seasoning/maintence product and SO SO cost efficient , I find I only have to use a tiny bit melted off the stick and it lasts forever. Thanks for all your contributions to the cast iron community .

I use my griddle to bake biscuits on all the time as well. Also, one year before we got married (43 years ago) I let my mother use my new skillet for a year to season it for us. Then when one of my younger sister's got married, we purchased her new skillet and I ask her if she wanted me to season it, she said yes. It caused stir at her bridal shower until she told everyone that it was new, but I had started seasoning it for her.

you are so humble.......the scripture at the end always gets me, lol.......thank you......by the way, I told you about my dutch oven a couple months ago, just like the one you have in the video, and after workin' on it and workin' on it and seasoning several times, mine came out beautifully as well! I was SO happy, and I'm glad to know now, how old it is and what brand.......I wasn't quite sure, but I felt like it was old.......belonged to my daddy :-)

My dad would cook a pot of beans in a Dutch oven in the campfire coals while at deer hunting camp, they would have a purplish color. One time I shot a wild Turkey and made a stew with it in the Dutch oven, it was delicious.

I made my own skillet/griddle/pizza pan. I took a new Lodge 12" skillet and cut it off down to 1" high from the stovetop to the top of the rim. I cut off the helper handle in the process but left the other handle. The handle is now offset from the rest of the piece which allows me to get my fingers or potholder around it to lift it easier. Cutting it down made it weigh a third less so lifting it is easier in that way too. I know not to mess with older cookware but I do love to modify new things to meet my needs. 100 years from now someone will look at my cookware and wonder who made it. Well I made it. Lodge cast it but I made it usable.

@@castIroncookware I have a question about what I believe is called a Vienna roll pan, it has absolutely no markings but appears to be old. Possibly has gate marks on edge. Six rolls that look like an elongated football. Question is how do I identify something like it, I have seen other makers with similar pans but aren't cast as rough as mine. It appears to have grind marks opposite of the gate marks.

I agree that a Griddle, a Skillet & a Dutch Oven is a good combination set for someone just getting started with cast iron cooking. Of course, after they start cooking in cast iron their collection will quickly grow!!!😊😊😊 I have found that using my cast iron on my induction cook top insures even heating across the entire surface. Another good video.👍👍🍳

When I was a baby ( 1962 ), we were very poor, and my mom needed new cookware, so she went to a mexican flea market and for $1.50 she purchased a set of Wagner #8, #5 skillets and a 1109 D griddle, the only piece that's left is the griddle, your video brings back fond memories. Also lovin the easy Beezy, It's all I use, now I don't know if I can use up all this grape seed and avocado oils before they go rancid?

Great video once again Stephen. I think both your #8 & #10 griddles are probably '40s as they do not have the OG markings. Generally Lodge began using the 2 digit designation in the '50s followed by MIU in the'60s. Also I've been meaning to ask, is that a custom Easy Beezy skillet on the wall behind you? So cool!

question.... do you have a book available? would you consider writing one? besides your channel what/where do you recommend someone who's inherited their 76yr old mothers collection go to find information about makers of the CI? I do know I have 2 pieces that are over 100 yrs old because those were passed down from the mother to daughter- a skillet and a 'tea' kettle.
