Nice job. Good that the home owner was there to do the demo. Never fun to explain a big hole in the wall after the fact. Gotta love those old systems where as you get into it the job just keeps getting bigger. I am working on an 82 year old boat right now. What started as two hour job has grown into 4 days so far and I still haven't finished the demo.

That looks very familiar. I picked up a HUD home ca 1925 cast iron from the bottom to the top!! It all starts when they turned the water back on and you think you have a bathroom that is functioning. Halfway through the day you go outside to the truck and happen to look up... hmm... why is the side of the house wet? two thirds the way up? Cracked pipe, split toward the outer wall. Fix that. Next day. Hmm... why is house wet one third the way up? because you thought you were done with one. Fix that one. In basement. Hmm what that smell? Should have done the whole standpipe. All cracks were facing out to the cold side. These were 12-20 inch long split pieces of iron. Ice has to be one of the strongest hydraulic forces in the universe. Kudos for giving feedback to the comments. Most people never come back around to answer questions. Those flexible boot clamps are the shit!!

Hi Chuck, I am researching the causes of cast iron pipe splitting along the length of the pipe. We have several commercial and research buildings that have multiple failures like this on the rain water leaders. I have recently been made aware of Microbiologically Influenced Corrosion or MIC. I have a suspicion that MIC is a major contributor to this type of failure in cast iron pipe however there is very little research on MIC specifically in water and sewer pipe (Most research has been in the oil and gas industry). I am hoping that you or anyone looking at this post has any opinion on this?

One question,what posessed you to remove the guard from your angle grinder?At the beginning of the video you stated that you were concerned with getting metal chips in your lungs while at the same time you were using that angle grinder without the guard or the side handle,seriously?So you were concerned with metal chips getitng into your lungs but you never gave a second thought to how extremely dangerous it is to use an angle grinder without the grinder guard and the side handle?If that were my house as soon as I saw you using that angle grinder without the grinder guard I would have asked you to leave my house immediately and I would have never called you back for any kind of work.You also stated towards the beginning of your video that you can't find the gaurd for your angle grinder which makes no kind of sense because if you had not removed the grinder guard you would not have to look fort it and what's more angle grinder guards are quick release which means the guard can be repositioned in no time at all.There is no way that I would ever use an angle grinder without the side handle or especially the grinder guard because I value my safety and my fingers.Seasoned butchers have had fingers cut off using band saws to cut meat so what makes you think that using angle grinders without the grinder guards is in any way a safe or smart thing to do?Sorry dude,you lost both my confidence and my vote.Money is tight all over I understand but if that's the case then head over to Harbor Freight and buy a nine inch angle grinder for $62.99 to tide you over until you save up enough to buy a better nine inch angle grinder and leave the grinder guard in place because there is no reason what so ever as to why the grinder guard should ever need to be removed from an angle grinder.A cheap tool can always be replaced with a better one,a severed finger on the other hand is not so easy and extremely expensive to reattach.As a licensed locksmith I have had to use my angle grinder to cut and adjust metal doors and metal door frames and one time when I was with my mentor the Jewish guy that taught me locksmithing he took my angle grinder and used it carelessly and I freaked out because my angle grinder got a hold of his coat and tore the guy's coat big time and in the excitement and the melee the locksmith didn't have the composure of mind to simply let go of the trigger on my angle grinder so I jumped and pulled the cord to disconnect the angle grinder which is why the angle grinder stopped immediately and believe it or not the locksmith still hadn't let go of the trigger on my angle grinder even after I had pulled the electric cord so believe me,I know exactly how dangerous misusing an angle grinder/being careless with an angle grinder can be.Thank God,blessed and praised be His name,Amen.,that I was close enough as I was to be able to pull the electric cord as fast as I was able to because if not my angle grinder would have torn a hole in the guy's side.Tools must be treated with the utmost respect and used exactly as the tools are designed and intended to be used because if not tools can and will hurt us very badly.Other than your misuse of your angle grinder your video is very good and educational,thank you and God bless you and yours.By the way,what helped prevent a total tragedy when my mentor the locksmith carelessly used my angle grinder was the fact that my angle grinder had both the grinder guard and the side handle attached,otherwise the situation could have ended up much much worse than just a torn coat.The metal buttons on my mentor's coat didn't do anything to slow the angle grinder down but the side handle did plenty to keep the angle grinder from tearing a hole into my mentor's side because my mentor had a good firm grip on the angle grinder's side handle thank God.I had just finished telling my mentor to be very very careful with using my angle grinder right before he scoffed at me and misused it and it got a hold of and tore the heck out of his coat,go figure.

@@ChuckBarron I am not trying to give you or anyone else a hard time.My aim is to raise awareness because believe it or not many people will take what you present as law and do things the very same way that you do things and as a professional you should do your best to stress safety above all else.My comment could have been longer still if I had also mentioned that one of my uncles worked for a meat packing company for over fifteen years and one day he cut one of his fingers off while operating a band saw to cut meat.My uncle's finger was reattached successfully and my uncle regained full use of the finger but he told me that the finger never felt the same after that.Thank you but no thank you,I did not post my comment on your video to receive any favors or free-bees,I posted my comment on your video because all of the youtube videos that I have seen so far show people using angle grinders without the grinder guards on them and that is an extremely dangerous and nasty habit and somebody somewhere is going to end up getting badly hurt from using angle grinders without the grinder guards God forbid.
@donaldvazquez
@donaldvazquez 4 жыл бұрын
It dangerous to take the guard off of course but the guard gets in the way. I’ve been doing plumbing for over 30 years. I throw the guards away. Wear good gloves and goggles or a shield. Getting the job done accurately and timely is important. Safety always. I’d say most pros don’t use guards. They slow you down and can get in the way. Doctors bone saws don’t have guards. Far more dangerous. Yes I’ve lost some skin here and there but my work is well praised. You learn to live with danger and always respect your tools. A hole hog drill will break your arm if you’re not always prepared for that sudden jolt.
@chrisgraham2904

That's quite a "chew out", but your right. The angle grinder is the most under estimated dangerous tool. It's the second most dangerous tool in the workshop, only surpassed by the table saw. The blade guard is a must. The right angle handle should be used wherever possible and when working with the thin kerf metal discs, buy the best you can. Harbor Freight and "chinesium" discs aren't worth the risks. Google "Images of angle grinder accidents"....not pretty!

sometimes it's easier to abandon a section of pipe in wall and run new out around it, use the old piece of vent-stack as a chase for smaller pipe (2") out the roof/rubber boot it, then they only have to box in new pipe. of course it wont pass code everywhere/many places, so be careful :)) less tear out/destruction, no playing with the roof boot, etc.

Chuck I also have pipe connections above the stack where I need to cut plus it looks like there is a brace connected to those pipes mounted to the rafters of the ceiling. I have to install a Clean-Out in the pipe is why I am doing this. We have a sewer blockage and the plumber needs a clean out on that pipe to snake it. Other plumbers in the past went through other pipe openings with no success snaking it. They went down the stand pipe in the floor with the P trap on the bottom, no success. Then they snaked it through a hole (in the side of a floor drain) and it did work for awhile (the unblockage). But again the new guy I want to do this told me about the clean out. Any thoughts from you or others on all this will help! Thanks Much! Also I did see in another video the guy put the glue on the inside of the rubber collar to the cast iron, which is not needed right? I understand about the glue though PVC to PVC..

There must be absolutely no code in NJ. Where I live, you CANNOT co mingle material (using ABS with cast) and absolutely no ferncos. This is not plumbing, this is a guy who has a sawzall, a few ferncos and some plastic pipe. Just putting multiple bandages on the same line. Also, trying to figure out why you didnt install a cleanout tee at the base of that stack. That fernco on that wet vent was horrendous by the way. Quit fooling the public on your KZfaq channel. You are a glorified handyman. Maybe my crew and I should put up a video and show you all the professional and correct way to do repairs. -ben (master plumber, local 16 omaha, NE)

I'm surprised you don't use a nut driver on an impact drill, makes things faster on the ferncos. Hmm
@ChuckBarron

just started that.....thanks

You can do the nut driver on a drill but you need to let go near the end and finish by hand or you will break the band occasionally. Not worth digging for another band that you probably don’t have.

I tried a few, the only thing that worked for me was treating it like leading cast together, just too much flammable materials around otherwise. I preheated the pipe some and used crude sleeve (soup can) and poured the joint, that was a large open basement. the other was instant charred wood and worry about fire, not worth the risk, no vent up wall, so I abandoned it and ran new pvc over and up through floor(sink). that's my favorite way to fix drain clogs, cut and replace, majority is iron pipe, no vents and open basement/crawlspace though, so it's pretty easy
