Cast Iron Drain Pipe Replacement | Galvanized Drain Pipe Repair | Orangeburg Sewer Pipe Problems

How do you know when you need a cast iron drain pipe replacement? How do you know when you need a galvanized drain pipe replacement? How do you know you need an Orangeburg drain pipe replacement?
Well, If your buying a home and your home inspector mentions you have cast iron drain pipe or your sewer inspector mentions you have Orangeburg drain pipe! Get it replaced because there is absolutely no benefit to keeping it besides keeping your money in the bank. This pipe will eventually become a nuisance and result in back ups or leaks in or under your home that can be very unpleasant.
Buying an older home will likely come with some old systems still in service such as your plumbing drain pipe system. And yes plumbing upgrades can be on the expensive side depending on your property type such as is the home on a raised foundation or a slab foundation?
Your home type can dictate the price of the plumbing upgrade, if your home is on a concrete slab the plumber will need to saw cut the floors inside the home to remove the cast iron and galvanized iron drain pipe. This is a very invasive task which can disrupt your way of life for a few weeks. If your home is on a raised foundation then this is much easier for the plumber to access and remove the old drain pipe system.
Cast Iron & Galvanized steel waste & vent pipe is present in the home. These materials were used widely throughout early 1900's till approximately late 1970's when ABS plastic became the more popular pipe to use. You can expect to do repairs on these older type of pipes in future as they have reached the end of their life expectancy and will eventually deteriorate and leak over time. Removing and upgrading these pipes is recommended and I also Recommend further evaluation by qualified licensed professional to evaluate condition of pipes and recommend a course of action regarding replacing/upgrading before the end of your inspection contingency period and close of escrow.

Bonus info - Orangeberg was initially designed as electrical conduit for commercial installations. I'm told it's installed in the Empire State Building in NY, still serving well. Just not a good idea to bury tarred cardboard pipe in the ground and put liquids through it, whether it's treated with pitch or not. There is still some (rare) surviving orangeberg in some west San Fernando Valley developments, most of it has failed and been replaced.

Yes sir Gary that is correct I did a bunch of research on that I didn’t get into all that detail in the video but yeah I did look that up pretty cool information it has a really good backstory to it.

We have orangeburg pipe but it runs under our parkway to the sewer line in the street, we had a plumber do a camera inspection and found out that part of the pipe is cracked. But that's up to the village to take care of that part of the line

My home was built in 1892 but the plumbing was not added until around 1903, because most of the homes in our village had privys

What’s wrong with new cast iron pipe, doesn’t today’s materials a lot better than the 100 year old cast iron? How do you know if pvc or abs will last 100 years?

I see you use ABS. Some guys use PVC. Can you tell me if and why you prefer ABS ? Also, can you recommend the best way to cut old galvanized steel pipe so as not to disturb the nub remaining in the cast iron fitting . Do you recommend a grinder with a metal cutting wheel or a sawzall blade, and what kind exactly ?
