In this video I not only create some cool cast iron skillet slabs from some of my scraps that have been piling up in my shop, but I also spend some time talking about how to batch out large quantities of projects using the CNC. For anyone that has a CNC, or is considering getting a CNC, this video is worth a look so you can incorporate some of these design principles and stretch your shop's output.

Very cool. I especially like the model cnc you have. The missus and I are still trying to decide if we want to go with a cnc. Thanks

Hey Derek! I have a OneFinity CNC. I couldn't be happier with it. It has been a game changer for me personally since I am a one man operation. I use the CNC to help me out in the shop, which frees me up to do other things. I recommend you check out my video on my very first CNC project using the OneFinity: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/qtF7dadl2sfTgaM.html I had absolutely no experience at the time of making that video so you can get an idea of how quickly you will progress through the learning curve.

Thanks Craig! These were a ton of fun to batch out. I have actually batched out a few things recently using the CNC. It’s rapidly becoming one of my most used tools in my shop.

Great work they are beautiful how do you get ca glue and painters tape to work i can never get it to stick
@EigenDesigns

You have to use the activator with the CA glue for it to set quickly. When paired with the activator the CA glue sets within 5 seconds or so

Great info thanks. One question - what method do you use to place the boards on the CNC so that XY doesn't have to be set for each board?

i do sme types of batch runs. i use a spacer and you have to set it in your drawing and in your work area as you lay out the woodor material to cut. i probably am not explaing this well but think it thru it is really pretty simple. i use 3/4 mdf as my spacers . so in my drawing i space my designs 3/4 apart same as my material on the machines spoil board. hope this helps

do a dry run simulation (no bit ) to make sure your drawing matches the work layout on the machine

Thanks for the video. When going from one slab to the next, do you have to tell the cnc where to start? Also, do the slabs have be square to the x and y axis
@EigenDesigns
@EigenDesigns Жыл бұрын
Hey Mauricio, in this video I did have to re-zero the cnc at each new piece of stock. However, since making this video I have created a design with multiple carves that is meant to be carved out of a single, larger piece of stock. Also, the stock definitely has to be square to the axis. I have X and Y grid lines on my spoil board that help me line things up. I made a video of cnc upgrades that walks through how I did it.

How do you go about lining up the file(s) in the CNC program so that it perfectly cuts out multiple pieces?
@EigenDesigns
@EigenDesigns 2 жыл бұрын
The best way I would recommend doing it (after doing a number of these "batch" runs) is to make a single piece of stock and create duplicate designs in the software so that the carving tool paths are all done at once. I hope that makes sense. The way I did it in this video is not the ideal way to do it because you have to essentially re-zero your X and Y for each piece.

Do you think you could get to the point where you are cutting 8 boards without having to zero the corner of each as you go? At least - it looked like you had to zero each as you went.
@EigenDesigns
@EigenDesigns 2 жыл бұрын
Great observation. Short answer: yes. Longer answer: because I was using shorter scraps for the 8 panels in this video I ended up carving each board individually for this particular run. Since making this video, I have done an additional batch run using larger pieces of wood to create a single panel and generated all 8 cut outs from a single "zero".

How did you know where to set your stock without having to get your XY for each board? Looks like you just randomly placed them in the tape/CA glue. TIA
@EigenDesigns
@EigenDesigns 2 жыл бұрын
For this particular run since I was using scrap wood for the panels (and thus they were smaller), I did have to re-zero my XY for each board. Since making this video I actually did another run out of a single large panel using longer pieces of wood (e.g. not misc. scrap pieces) and I was able to run all 8 from a single Zero. I hope this helps.
