CASTE is a Portuguese word for discrimination on groups of people based on breeds.... slavery, racism..etc. Varnas are occupational groups like a company has so does a society Accountants, labour, management, security, .etc Jatis are parental lineages and ancestry for marriages to avoid incestus relationships....

Those occupations like accountant, security, labour, management were practiced hierarchically based on their birth, right? Priest's son will become priest, army's son will become army, labourer's son will become labourer etc etc ..... that's why it was called caste system, if there was enough freedom among them so they could choose their profession as per their will , we could call it Varna system. By the way, it does not matter wherever you call it , in the past people didn't have freedom of occupation which oppressed the people working at the bottom, even today in villages this system is practiced which is a social evil.

I am a PhD student in an IIT, in pure science. Once our department's admin shared the caste breakup in our dept out of ignorance Out of 46 students 40 are general category 4 are OBC and 1 is SC i.e. me no ST no Minority. A similar trend is across IITs. Recent survey showed, out of approx 6300 profs in IITs around India, only 149 belong to SC and SCs are 20% of India's population. IIMs are even worse.
