Sirmione è una bellissima cittadina che si affaccia sul Lago di Garda, è situato su una lingua di terra che si protende sulle acque del lago.
Tra le sue numerose attrazioni c’è il Castello Scaligero, edificato intorno alla metà del XIII secolo, che rappresenta uno straordinario esempio di fortificazione lacustre. Appartenuto alla famiglia Della Scala, che governava sulla città di Verona e sul territorio circostante, è una delle rocche meglio conservate della zona.
L’accesso al castello avviene attraverso un piccolo ponte che un tempo era un ponte levatoio; dal cortile centrale si accede ai camminamenti di ronda che percorrono i quattro lati del cortile attraversando le tre torri angolari scudate, cioè aperte verso l’interno, tipiche dell’architettura scaligera. Il Mastio, alto ben 37 metri, in origine era l’abitazione del castellano, affiancato dal dormitorio per i soldati. Le mura culminano in una merlatura a coda di rondine.
Parte integrante del castello è la darsena che racchiude una porzione del lago, questa costituisce un bellissimo e affascinante porto fortificato dove accogliere la flotta; la darsena ha una forma irregolare, forse studiata per proteggere l’interno dal vento di tramontana.

Among its many attractions is the Scaliger Castle, built around the middle of the 13th century, which represents an extraordinary example of lake fortification. Belonged to the Della Scala family, who ruled over the city of Verona and the surrounding area, it is one of the best preserved fortresses in the area.
Access to the castle is via a small bridge that was once a drawbridge; the central courtyard leads to the patrol walkways that run along the four sides of the courtyard, crossing the three shielded corner towers, that is, open inwards, typical of Scaliger architecture. The Keep, 37 meters high, was originally the home of the castellan, flanked by the dormitory for the soldiers. The walls culminate in a dovetail battlements.
An integral part of the castle is the dock that encloses a portion of the lake, this constitutes a beautiful and fascinating fortified port where to welcome the fleet; the dock has an irregular shape, perhaps designed to protect the interior from the north wind.
