Martin from East Coast Fibreglass demonstrates how to produce a highly detailed cast of 2 hands held together using alginate to make a mould, and fine casting plaster (plaster of paris) to make the cast. This is a very quick and easy project that can be completed easily in under an hour.

I have been casting for many years with many materials, a couple of things about this, you don't really need a pot/tube that big, you can see how thick the set Alginate was but the main thing is how the plaster was mixed, and too much, best to pour the water into the mould then out again into a bowl or tub, you then sprinkle the plaster into the water not to fast and let it settle filling till it's just below the top of the water, little islands of plaster above and let' soak for a min or 2, it won't go hard then mix it, it will be a lot smoother fewer chances of lumps or air bubbles in your cast. I would use a brush to coat the insides of the mould with the plaster before pouring the plaster again less chance of missed parts or bubbles holes in the cast. hope that helps.

I found your video very helpful. The only questions I have are, 1) How long do your hands remain in the alginate before you wiggle them out and 2) How long does it take for the plaster to dry before you can peel away the alginate? Thank you.
@ecfibreglassuk
@ecfibreglassuk 5 жыл бұрын
To answer your questions - 1) It depends mainly on how warm the water is, but it is very fast - only a minute or two, and you can tell when it has set. 2) Again, this depends on the type of plaster, room temperature etc but you can tell when it has dried as the top open part will go hard. Hope that helps! :-)

Hey there, just for anyone wondering, the process cant be repeated with alginate, as soon as you used it once you can throw it out. (Technically you could also eat it, its edible)

Alginate - For small impressions you should use a powder:water ratio of 1:1 or 1:2. For larger impressions this can be increased to 1:3 or 1:4. Fine casting plaster - Water addition ratio of 100:70 - or 1kg of plaster to 0.7 litres of water - sets in 13-20 minutes at room temperature.
