Good morning.
So I have been asked to review a voice over website call Casting Call Club. People wanted to know if I thought it was a good platform for voice actors and for making money. Well I spent maybe a month on it and yes, I have a lot to say.
Hope you enjoy my review.

There is now a $20 minimum in order to be listed as a paid project. Thanks for the suggestions. Keep 'em coming. Just to reiterate, we don't want to compete with Voices.com, Fiverr, etc. We're not a job board, or a conveyor belt designed to get you to pay. We are a learning platform, made to practice, to have fun, and to find other like-minded individuals looking to create.

I agree Casting Call Club isn't made to represent the VO industry, I use the site mostly just to have fun and build up my voice acting ability. It was and still is the most used VO sites I audition on, mostly because other sites like Bodalgo, Voices.com, and Voice123 are sites that require payment to audition for "public" casting calls, or don't have you audition at all. I would argue CCC is good for a beginner voice over talent who wants to make it a hobby, or one who has no budget to spend on a website where there is no guarantee that you will make even the slightest fraction of your money back. That's my two cents, I do, though, agree with a lot of you said. PS: Thank you for the follow back on CCC.

ive used casting call club multiple times to assist in casting, and thumbs ups or votes or comments dont mean a damn thing, i also get DMs from people but none of that is taken into consideration. I know VO, i know casting and direction. but yes, i do agree, the amateur, unpaid, fandubs, most of those have many errors in casting or little care into casting. but at the end of the day, that means that truly anyone can get experience to start and understand working with audio and auditioning. like little league as you said. i call it community theatre for online VO

I have been using casting call for a few months and its a lot of fun and there are good gigs to book on there. My first role there was an audio play and after all the lines were done for the 4 characters I voiced I pulled in $150. Its not a lot of cash but these are independent projects so don't expect to be able to support your career. Its great practice and around 10% of casting directors give any feed back. You can occasionally find people trying to do serious projects and there is always a tiny chance you will get noticed, though don't count on it. The main issues I have are quality control and the upvote system. Some projects only look at the upvoted actors and many are simply upvoted from friends. While I realize its my opinion, a person should not be upvoted 16 times when they have, reverb and echo in their audition. Which honestly is just as bad as anything else since it makes people feel that they are doing great when the reality is that we all have work to do. Criticism equals growth. That aside its a great site to get your feet wet and there is nothing stopping you from using a pseudonym so don't stress that part. The average fall out is said to be 1/100 on a successful audition so don't get disheartened if you don't book what you want. Casting is really based on opinion and you may not have the voice or style they want for this specific part. There will be more. Voices.com is a great site but expensive, Voices123 is basically the same at a slightly lower rate. Bodalgo only takes trained VAs so if you don't have any classes or training they will auto close your account. Voicebunny...um really there's a lot I can say here but I'll leave it at no...just no. You can also add Fiverr to that no list. I should note that a few of these sites listed will not allow you to post the work you do through them on any site but their's and do not actually help your career. If you chose to work the last 2 expect to have to lower your rates to rock bottom. Upwork has a lot of jobs but again if you don't have any experience you will not likely book as they have a performance rating system based on the jobs you do through them. Though people do scout you on upwork, if you have a solid portfolio. 2 more sites like upwork are Peopleperhour.com and Freelancer.com. Though again with these its bid low and give high quality. If you are a strong narrator and have a good set of character voices try out ACX but be ready to mass audition and don't take turn downs personally because again it doesn't mean you're actually bad, just that the ears that heard you wants something else. Sound quality will hurt you here so get your DAW skills up before you even try. Oh lastly about ACX be ready to perform opposite sex voices or be willing to find a partner. In the end CCC is a great site if your starting out, want to practice your trade, or just want to do voices for fun.

I don't treat voice acting personally as a professional thing-it's mostly something I have fun doing for friends and projects. I've heard the best advice (from the likes of Tara Strong and dozens of other major voice actors) is to just do it-and I think sites like these aren't' the best place. I think the best is to try and either find places of employment where you can show off your portfolio of work, or make projects yourself that utilise your voice (both is probably best) . But I think community and connections are better than a randomised website where you find anyone-build your brand and build your connections.

I've been on CCC since the beginning of the site and I can say, overall, the site is meh at best. I've heard people's auditions for projects that sounded amazing, but they weren't cast. The guy with the loud plosives in his audition got the role instead lol! Audio verification is a neat idea to further distance from the casual pack and ccc gold I cannot get behind tbh. They do have voice actors on the site to help others with voice work, but I dunno how effective or how good it is. My experience is that I've gotten cast from the site, but nothing came of it due to people losing interest in the project or never doing anything with the project to begin with. It's nice to go on there and audition now and again, but it's not the 'go to' site for me. I think the site needs more FNaF fandubs....for sure lol.

The thumb's up /down system on CCC can really screw with your confidence and expectations. You can have 8 people love how you auditioned, but then the casting director / project owner goes with someone who had no thumbs up whatsoever. I mean that's fine, they're looking for specific voices for their characters. They don't need everyone to like that particular voice. Part of me wishes it weren't there. Also, the other site you were talking about is BehindTheVoiceActors.com . Funnily enough I booked more auditions over there, but almost never had anyone engage conversation with anyone about scripts etc. or see them complete their projects. I gave up on that site and moved onto CCC. Now I'm over 100+ auditions or so, and only got a few roles to speak of. Learning how to audition is perhaps the hardest part for me right now.
@FunnyGuyTimmy
@FunnyGuyTimmy 5 жыл бұрын
Well it's not so much "how to audition" it's more how to perform. An audition is just a sample of what you would bring to the role. Not it's own beast. Yes there is a right and wrong way to audition and some might say format but the actual acting should be the same as if you actually got the role. The first thing that always seems to get in the way of younger or beginning voice actors is being comfortable going way over. What I mean is most people can do VOICES but not everyone can deliver a different PERFORMANCE. For example; when you need to yell or scream, do you actually scream or yell or do you do a kind of whisper yelling? What is your profile on CCC? I would love to see what you have done and would love to listen to your demos.

I think the point of thumb up is for people not feeling, "oh, I didn't get roles, I'm horrible" but rather "I didn't get the role, but I did well." Cause if you only depend on if you got the role, people will be discouraged quickly, as people, in the end, love to hear some other critique than "you didn't get the role, bye." Sure, thumb ups only can give positive feedback, thought you can always comment to it
@FunnyGuyTimmy
@FunnyGuyTimmy 5 жыл бұрын
True, but most people don't get any kind of feed back. Most auditions go un-replied to. My fear is that it will end up being some kind of popularity contest. Also the industry will be filled with no reply and no positive feed back 99% of the time. I would hate for younger people getting into thing thinking this is how it's going to be and then getting horribly surprised by the rejection and silence.

I've got a question for you. I am a theater graduate. Been doing it all my life. I got into voice over when I was in college and I really wanna do it as a career. I had to stop last year due to surgery in my throat but I'm trying to get back in the game. With this website be good for say someone who just wants to stretch their muscle the little bit? I know no way in hell this will help me in the real industry but would it tarnish me if I used it that way? I will be taking pro classes soon and have been attending workouts in LA so I know that's the right place to start.

Spot on assessment, in my experience. They can be fun for practice, but sites like Casting Call Club aren't going to get you anywhere. Even in the non-professional arena, unfortunately. There are so many projects that I've been cast for on these sties that never get finished or, in some cases, never even get a script.

@FunnyGuyTimmy so what sites or way do you suggest when it comes to finding well paying video game or animation work? I have my commercial demo and and I’m working up to my video game demo but I wanted to start auditioning on a professional site, where I could have some good competition. To get a taste of what it will really be like. I would love to get my foot in the door early on if possible.

All websites have those kinds of gigs. But the well paying roles are few and hard to find no matter which platform. If your just starting out you can’t afford and should avoid the pay-to-plays. You should stick with CCC and Fiverr. More cartoon, animation and video game work, and some well paying but like I said few and hard to find.

Even though this isn’t a real audition website, can I put roles from this website on my resume when I’m first starting out?
@FunnyGuyTimmy
@FunnyGuyTimmy 3 жыл бұрын
What do you mean "real audition website"? There are always a few notable projects coming through. Some that pay $100s to $1000s. The only reason most people don't take the website serious is because of it's open platform format. This of course means there are going to be a lot of free and amature projects but that doesn't mean the good work is devalued by association. On your resume you won't be writing the site you got the work from just the project details, director and role. SO there should be nothing to prevent you from including the work you are most proud of that you might get from this site. The goal of a resume is to show you are getting work and how regularly you are getting it. Secondly is the quality or status of said work. So include away.

After flirting with the idea for, literally, decades, I'm getting into VO, and from what I've seen of CCC so far, I like that I can listen to other auditions and get ideas of what other people are doing with the same lines. It's interesting/informative to hear all these different takes on the same script.
@FunnyGuyTimmy
@FunnyGuyTimmy 4 жыл бұрын
Brent O'Dell yes you can but that isn’t something you should use to determine what style or read you will use. You need to recored your own takes and styles, not someone else’s. If you rely on other peoples reads to figure out what to say and how to say it you will not actually be understanding the character or interpreting the script your own way.also if you copy the “best” auditions and some how get the job, how will you know how to perform the rest of the script. Its fine to listen to other’s auditions, just don’t rely on it for your own recordings.

How can I truly start my path as an aspiring Voice Actor?
@FunnyGuyTimmy
@FunnyGuyTimmy 5 жыл бұрын
Well first you need to know what you are getting yourself into and what it is you actually want. Most people who say that mean "I want to do voices in cartoons for TV and video games." If that is your goal you need to know it will take a long time to get there. If you think you will buy a mic and then immediately get an agent, make money and get the bets roles you would be sadly mistaken. Fist: know it will take years. Many, many years. Most of those years will be nothing but mistakes and rejection. Kind of like dating. Second: become an audio engineer before becoming a voice actor. This means focus more on what makes audio great and buy the right equipment for you before getting the training and spending time or money on demos. Third: buy the right gear for your voice, recording space and situation. This will take the longest time to understand what works best for you at first. Fourth: watch as many videos for free on the topic that you can before paying anyone for training. Other wise you will spend most of the coaching time just trying to understand what the heck they are talking about. Fifth: get on stage in front of people. This help you get more comfortable performing, acting and being light on your feet. It will also help you with nervousness and freezing up. Sixth: get coaching from someone who works in the area you want to go into. Someone you know they are making money at that thing and not just living off coaching. Getting coaching from someone who only coaches and doesn't work as a voice actor is pointless. Seventh: when you feel ready get good demos produced. Then take those demos and spread them everywhere. The more places people can see your demos the better. And where ever the demos are make sure people can see how to get in touch with you. Seventh: Audition for at least 20 projects a day. The more you audition, the better you will get and them more experience you will get. Also the more likely you will make money at voice over. Finally: keep doing all of these things and learn from your mistakes along the way. As time goes one you will get better at it and it will get easier.

But that's not to say you can't be successful, it's just that if you don't know what you want you will spend more time trying to figure it out then actually learning what you need to know about the thing you want to do. I would say get involved in the acting or improve groups on campus. Acting stills will make you better at voice acting and script writing. Find out what you want to do first.

But I don’t actually remember saying you can’t start here. In fact, it’s a great place to start. I like CCC, it is a great place to test the water or just have fun. I'm under no illusion and know that I won't find $1k pfh or major roles on the site but I still have been one of the fortunate few to find paid roles that I could then use to upgrade equipment slowly but surely to the point where I *might* have a chance at something bigger in the future. But those big sites are a huge gamble, competition is fierce and I dislike the idea of paying what is often no small fee just to be able to see some of the roles you can audition for! It feels like you are just a money maker for those sites, a commodity and you may or may not be lucky and recoup that investment. Meanwhile CCC has no such paywall everyone can audition and everyone can post a project. The likes are a nice ego boost and nothing more. Woe to any casting directors who actually rely on them or foolhardy voice actors who think they will win the role with the most 'votes'. I see them as a sticking plaster for those new to the game to help them get used to the sting of rejection, which they must get used to if they do try to take the next step. CCC gives yourself a chance to explore what you can do without the pay-2-play risk. it gives you the opportunity to collaborate with many others to build your skills, network and portfolio. The founder and owner, Buford is pretty hands on (as can be seen by him personally responding to you as he has for me in the past) and is constantly updating and improving the site to keep it fresh and relevant whilst still easy and intuitive to use. On CCC I don't feel like a commodity, I feel like a person.

Alek Coble don’t be too discouraged. This video is a bit old and the creators of the site have actually listened to a lot of what I said and have made serious improvements to the site. They have also been marketing it as a more professional platform and have drawn in some more professional clients and projects. Not enough to say it’s a professional platform but it’s getting their. You should be on more site than just one. Don’t pay for memberships but set up free profiles. Spread your demos around and audition where you can. I would say to look into Fiverr first. It’s free and one of the best places to start. Lastly, don’t just focus on character work. You will need the practice in all areas to get good at VO over all. As you move on you will slide into the areas you are best at and the clients will slowly build.
