Oh I LOVE this movie! Everything is just...GAH SO FULL OF ADVENTURE AND LOVE AND MAGIC I LOVE IT! Cloris Leachman and Mark Hamill are just brilliant and I loved Paquin and van der Beek as the kids. Fun Fact! Did you know this movie is actually set in Wales? Miyazaki said he visited Cymru during the miner's strike and admired the hard work of the men. So he made this film showing the hardwork of mining communities.

James van der Beek and Anna Paquin are often considered by many viewers to be the reason to avoid the Disney dub of LAPUTA, if mainly because they make their characters sound older as opposed to their Japanese counterparts. While I can agree that it is a bit jarring to hear James' voice come out of Pazu sometimes, he does put an honest effort into it and for that he gets a pass. Paquin is probably the lesser of the two, but the occasional missed line notwithstanding, she's decent as Sheeta. I don't think either are the best voices in the movie (that honor belongs to everyone else), but I do think they get too much flak. They're both solid IMO.

+RandomMindz Cool! That sounds awesome. Incidentally, I also got Hamill's autograph for his role in this movie. I was so nervous when I was meeting him. But he turned out to be a genially nice guy and he told me that he loved doing the Miyazaki films. He even said that the "timing" is the toughest part of the role. He's also quite chatty; ask him a question and he'll take about a minute to answer.

+FireNationPhoenix Well, I met him at one of the earlier New York Comic Cons. I was so bloody nervous as I stood on line to get his autograph, because… well, because he's Mark Hamill. The guy who will be forever remembered as Luke Skywalker. But he was a very pleasant, down to earth guy and very nice to talk to. As I mentioned, he even spoke fondly of Miyazaki and told me that timing was the toughest part of the job. After all he basically had to sync to already completed animation, not an easy thing to do when overdubbing. I later went to his panel, and I heard him do a whole range of voices while he was talking… including a dead-on impression of Harrison Ford! I swear, I really had underestimated this guy. He's really good at voice acting. Muska is no doubt one of his best roles, although I must say he's quite unrecognizable as the Joker.

The action, the adventure, the beautiful animation, the fun and intense scenarios, the characters, movies like this were something I loved as a kid. Seeing this again at 22, I went as far as shed a couple tears a bit, because I felt like a little kid again. It was just an all around awesome movie, and IMO, is my all time favorite Ghibli movie.

Fun fact, the movie was called "Laputa," but they changed it when it came to America because of our large Hispanic audience and La Puta is rather vulgar in Spanish. That's also why the American dub says lapusha instead.

to be honest this beats all Disney movies. They aren't even on the same level. These movies appeal to people to all ages. I can't imagine my grandmother watching Disney, at least. I am not criticizing Disney, but I just think Ghibli produces better works.

Castle in the Sky may be better than almost every Disney movie, but I don't think anything comes close to The Lion King. You can look at every aspect, and The Lion King is better. The voice acting, the animation, the themes, the score, the pacing, the characters. It also appeals to people of all ages, and is probably the only Disney film that is on the same level as Miyazaki. It's one of the only films that I would deem a masterpiece.

I think people tend to see Japanese stuff as super great and superior to our stuff because it’s foreign. It’s not like what we’ve been used to, so it gives an extra dose of amazement. And I think studio ghibli films are AS good as Disney films. I think they’re actually not as good as disney’s Best work. Because Miyazaki made most of these films, they feel similar at times. And because a lot of the stuff is improvised and is more personal, it’s a bit clunky and not the best at flowing smoothly. Chacaters aren’t the most memorable (it’s not bad, just saying). Sure Disney has made stuff that’s a lot worse, but their best is better than studio ghibli. Studio ghibli is really good still.

Does anyone else get the feeling that Nausica and Castle In The Sky are in the same universe? Seriously, some of the creature designs, lessons about technology and nature, the music and even the main female character just feel like they are connected. Maybe Laputa was created to destroy the Toxic Jungle, but was abandoned because of its destructive power. Or maybe Laputa was the reason why the world ended in the first place.

I have to tell something really funny that happened with this movie. In my private middle school, nearly all the kids and I were sitting in the center with a small tv above for a movie to be put in (and also cookies), and castle in the sky was picked by this one kid. When the movie was playing, the moment it showed the scene with guns, the teachers stopped it and asked where the kid who put in the movie was, but he was absent, and I guess it wasn't a big deal, so we continued watching a movie with guns

Something I’d like to add is that Muska is kind of an anomaly for Miyazaki: His movies usually don’t have outright badguys in them, because he dislikes black/white-morality. Instead, we get strangely likeable antagonists who often end the story having learned a positive lesson or two themselves. Muska, in stark contrast, is a 100% irredeemable villain. I mean, he works for the purpose of this story and Hamill gives a great performance, but I just found it worth pointing out.

I still think this just has to be my favorite original. Howl's moving castle never made me interested in the antagonists. Spirited away while I love the world never felt like the plot was engaging. Princess mononoke sometimes felt like the direction with the action and violence was so ridiculous it hurt the film for me. Secret world of Ariety is my overall favorite though thats a world that I need nothing else to love.

Disney didn't dub the original '80s version of Laputa; that was done by some unknown company called Magnum. And to anyone who says it's better than the Disney version: Sorry, but that's just not true. At all. Despite the leads sounding "younger" than their Disney counterparts (but not convincingly so) and the script not taking as many liberties, the overall '80s dub is a genuine train wreck, with some of the stiffest, slapdash "acting" I've ever listened to and even choppier dialogue. I don't care if it contains the last part of Sheeta's speech or not; the bad acting and dialogue killed it for me. Disney's current version isn't without its occasional drawbacks; the leads are probably a bit too old and not as good as the rest of the cast (although they're certainly not terrible; Van der Beek, despite sounding significantly more mature, does a surprisingly good turn as Pazu, and while Paquin misses a few lines in places, it's not that detrimental, and I thought the accent suited the role), its positives ultimately put it over the '80s dub. The performances by the supporting cast, for instance, are excellent, especially Mark Hamill and Cloris Leachman, and the script is much better written if at times considerably chattier. The rescore by Joe Hisaishi is also a bonus (although it tragically was taken out of subsequent releases of the Disney dub, quite undeservedly).
@eclipsesonic
@eclipsesonic 8 жыл бұрын
Turnajon The U.K. Blu-Ray release of the film is the best version because it retains the re-score from Joe Hisaishi, but it also removes the extra dialogue that was made with the English dub.
@Turnajon
@Turnajon 8 жыл бұрын
eclipsesonic The Japanese and Austrailian BDs also contain the rescore and are devoid of the extra lines. Having said that, though, I wouldn't have cut out all those extra lines. I liked the pirates' dialogue, for instance; I felt it gave them a lot of character and there were some dialogue cuts that weren't handled smoothly (like Pazu's mouth laughing but no sound out when his pigeons tickle him at the beginning. I would have kept that. Likewise, Muska's "You little brat! Goodbye! Enjoy the ride!" was awesome, and taking it out of there and changing it to just "Goodbye!", for me, kinda diluted it.) Dola's teaching Sheeta to talk like a pirate was funny as well. That said, the only parts of the extra lines that were gratuitous to me were the bits where Pazu and Sheeta comment on things that the audience can clearly see; the cloud of Laputa after the Uncle Pom scene, and when they're exploring Laputa in the latter half of the film; those lines were a bit much. Still, I prefer the Disney dub over both the JAL dub and even the Japanese version (even though I know it has its strong points, too), warts and all.

The reason why Sheeta's accent is back and forth in the film is because Anna Paquin does, in fact, talk like that in real life. She was born in Canada and grew up in New Zealand, and she has admitted to bouncing between accents when she talks with friends from NZ. Considering that we find out who Sheeta is, I don't find the accent to be a bad thing at all. I felt it was fitting and appropriate, even if its inconsistent at times.

I wouldn't say the Japanese version of this movie is better, only different. I'm not particularly fond of the Japanese VAs for the lead characters, though; they seed a bit too shrieky. James and Anna weren't perfect as Pazu or Sheeta, but they did a good job regardless. Everyone else in Disney's version excels though, and for that I prefer that version.

+Eamonn Deane I would definitely agree about the new score being more fitting for this movie, but be careful about telling that to diehard fans of the original Japanese. There are still some people who actively dislike it. But that doesn't mean everyone does.

@pierrebegley2746 8 жыл бұрын
+Turnajon Sadly I can't agree with you there. I always feel with the Japanese versions of the Miyazaki films, I always feel that the Japanese VAs put a heck of a lot of passion in their roles. I can feel the emotions. And I feel the music in the Japanese version is kinda better too. That's not to say I dislike the English Dub, it's only a slight preference. And yeah as mentioned the English VAs they chose for the English dub are pretty much perfect, apart from James Van Der Beek as Pazu, but even he's fine really. And I just prefer the Japanese Dubs of most animes anyway. Especially if the English Dub is a 4Kids dub.

Eamonn Deane Well... it all really depends on what age she is really. But either way, give her Japanese VA credit, she voiced both the young and old Sophie as opposed to getting 2 different VAs. Otherwise there is one Stusio Ghibli film I generally watch in English, that being Spirited Away, partly because I grew up with it. Though I ALWAYS watch My Neighbor Totoro and Grave of the Fireflies in Japanese (Wait Grave of the Fireflies? I only saw that once, I;m never watching that film again. T-T)

I was pretty lost unfortunately ! I would say I deeply appreciate the passion behind the making of the movie , the amount of patience etc., I felt I enjoyed something much more light hearted like My Neighbor Yamadas better.
