Not sure I like this translation. The version I watch as a kid is different. Sheeta's realization of Laputa's fall was because Laputains chose to live in the sky as gods, 'cut the roots' and sever their connection to mother earth. Their advance technology of floating in sky is the reason why they fall. It's more poetic then just 'people can't live without love'.

Yes, and in Japanese she just tells muska that he isn't a king because there is no kingdom. simple logic which was reinforced by her quoting the poem about the sky people who already left a long time ago to settle on land and return to a natural way of life. here they overdramatized the line by turning it into a "a king without compassion..."

This is my favourite movie of all time. Yes favourite all time, all genres movie and not just favourite anime. I love this so much I bought the DVD, the Blu-Ray and later the UK import Blu-Ray just to be able to listen to the Disney cast and the great Mark Hamill. I love this movie more than any other piece of art or media. I love it even more than Evangelion.

Yep, same! This is my favorite movie of all times (animated or not). Everything just feels right in this, everything falls into place exactly the way I like it when watching a movie. And it have many elements of what I really like in a good story, mysteries, adventure, small individuals fighting a threat way bigger than them (yes, for some reason I love this trope). And a deep anti war message. Love it!

Despite being French, I rarely prefer the French versions of movies or video games. Not that they're bad (generally quite the opposite, tbh), I'm just all about Original versions 99% of the time. But _this_ movie? This scene? It's part of the 1% where French is just by far the superior version to me 💙

Le doublage français est généralement très qualitatif selon moi. D'ailleurs, je n'ai jamais vu un film ghibli dont la vf ne soit pas convaincante.

This has always been one of the things I cannot abide, ever since getting around to the original lines in the subtitled version. There is an ocean of difference between “you cannot live without the earth” and “you cannot live without love” and the former is both far more mature and impactful.

@@OnafetsEnovap I personally translsted this line to Kazakh and Turkish as "we are able not to harm earth as the Amanah", using the Arabic loanword Amanah that means having a trust or responsibility to something or someone. In Islam, Amanah refers to having integrity, and using our free will to carry out our duties and responsibilities towards Allah and His creation in the correct way.

Stupid english translation with that silly "compassion" and "deserve" line. In Japanese she just said: "There is no king without a kingdom." Which is why she quoted the poem about the former sky people abandoning the floating cities to live simple lives with nature on land. It's simple logic: Muska can't declare himself a king because THE PEOPLE OF THE KINGDOM ALREADY LEFT A LONG TIME AGO. How can one be a leader if there is no one to lead? An emperor if there is no empire? There was no need to overdramatize the line.

Miyazaki doesn't romanticize nature or condemn all technology. His view is more complex, best shown in Princess Mononoke.

I think Miyazaki's point through Sheeta's line was about not harming earth as an Amanah. In Arabic, Amanah means trust, honesty and loyalty. Having an Amanah means having a trust or responsibility to something or someone. In Islam, Amanah refers to having integrity, and using our free will to carry out our duties and responsibilities towards Allah and His creation in the correct way.
