Castle Rising was built around 1140 by William d'Aubingy, an Anglo-Norman noble. The castle is probably most famous for being the place Queen Isabella, the She-Wolf of France, 'retired' to after her fall from power following the death of her husband, Edward II, at Berkeley Castle. The castle is a fantastic example of a hall keep, bearing similarities in design to Henry I's keep at Norwich, and the castle's extensive earthworks are some of the most impressive we've seen!
For upcoming events at the castle, check out here - www.castlerising.co.uk/events/
For those of you interested in Edward II's life and mysterious death, including Isabella and Roger Mortimer's temporary rule of England, check out historian Kathryn Warner's blog, it's incredibly well-written, interesting, and addictive!- edwardthesecond.blogspot.com/
(and not at all sponsored by Kathryn Warner, but her book 'Long Live the King: The Mysterious Fate of Edward II' is a must for any history lover's reading list and available from Amazon :D)

This is a great tour, thank you! Very useful to me personally as I'm visiting it in a weeks time. Fun fact: my Dad was a custodian of this castle in the early 80's, well fun to me ; ) I also used to help maintain the grounds when I worked for 'Kings Lynn Landscapes' around the the same time in the 80's.

When I visit a place like this I like to stand quietly & 'steep' in the feelings that you get from the walls, no matter how ruined, because they seem to be telling you they are important. I find the constant chitchat of this style of video a bit annoying therefore - not enough time to take in what we are looking at before we go on to the next view. A staircase in a place like this is not just a staircase, it needs savoring - so, thank you for trying to tel us all about it, but I will not remember Roger Mortimer's deeds, altho I had heard of him many times before, but I would have held the feeling of the place in my memory had I had the chance to see it all more carefully ! IOW stop dashing around - you don't see most visitors doing that - you see them standing & pondering what they are seeing !

Hey Veronica, thanks for the feedback. We all spend time to explore and admire the buildings prior to doing the shoot - how could you not?!
