But not being a descendant of the Belmont bloodline (because the whip itself is bound to the Belmont lineage through a Blood Covenant) means that the only way they can fully utilize the whips power is by sacrificing their own life force to wield it, meaning one who uses it too much could cause them great harm or even kill them. It is what killed John Morris after Bloodlines, because he used the whip so much that his wounds were unable to heal properly after his battle with Dracula, leaving him with a severely shortened lifespan. It is also why he so adamantly wanted his son Jonathan to learn how to survive on his own strength without the Vampire Killers power.
