The Batman Of Zur En Arrh from silver age alien to something else... This colourful version of the dark knight has quite the history at DC Comics and beyond. Batman has seen this concept evolved in a couple of ways, one an edgy maniacal version in Grant Morrison's Batman and beyond. the second a more faithful rendition by Batman The Brave And The Bold. We take a look at it all as we dive into The Super Batman From Planet X here on Casually Comics!

indeed, like technically speaking batman is already bruce trauma response to his past, this is just a double trauma response now also i kind of hate the whole "zorro would be taken to arkham" why tho? zorro is not pretending being a foxman or anything at all, he really is just a masked dude being fancy and fighting, by that logic any criminal with a head covering are automatically going to arkham even if it is just to cover their identity to steal, you really gotta pretend everything works with a irl idea of teh world, not even gotham/comics world logic

I feel like the best way to modernize Tlano/Batman of Zur-En-Arrh would be to set him in the Legion of Superheroes era. Make him be inspired by a bat-like creature of his own world and reading of the Batman of Earth from a thousand years ago, which is where gets his interlac and english name Batman instead of whatever it'd be in his own world's language(s). He'd operate mostly on his own world but occasionally help the Legion, perhaps with detective work most of all to truly fit his namesake!

Morrison's line about Batman being "out of his comfort zone" is interesting because it does speak to the fan tendency to make bad older stories more narratively satisfying in their mind when often times, the original writers just did not care and thought they were writing for children

As a kid Batman the Brave and the Bold was my first exposure to Zurr-En-Arrh and when I started reading comics I wanted to go back to older stories so for me the original Zur-En-Arrh Batman is still the one that first comes to mind. Honestly part of me wishes they brought that element back and have Bat-Mite be the reason why for the past few years almost every Batman story has been about him losing control of all of Gotham.

It could work. Heck, there’s precedent for 5th dimensional imps causing meta stuff like that to happen. One of my favorite Mxy stories by Grant Morrison implies that every story Mxy is a part of is him telling/writing stories about his favorite hero who he’s too attached to.

The Batman: Brave and the Bold series was just so pitch-perfect. If they had sat down with the intent of creating a show just for me, they couldn't have done a better job. :D I do admire the way Morrison isn't afraid to latch onto any crazy random thing from a character's past and try to find a way to make it fit. It's not always 100% successful, but he's always in there, taking the big swings. I definitely want to hear your take on Fatman. On the one hand, there's a lot of fat-shaming humor that probably wouldn't fly today. On the other hand, he's shown as brave and smart and gets to save the day. Plus I like the fact that Batman is completely nonchalant about some comedian mocking him. If it were a Silver Age Superman story, I feel like Supes would be at least a little bit miffed about this guy roasting him, but Batman is all, "Relax, dude, I can take a joke".

Potential subjects: The Doom Patrol story, the Captain Marvel crossovers, especially the one with Black Adam, the Aquaman story with Ocean Master, the two-parter with Owl Man, the Joker-Weeper team-up, the crossover with all three Flashes, the multi-part Starro tale where B'wana Beast redeemed himself, Red Tornado and son, Plastic Man vs. Grodd, the Captain Atom story... just so many.

I think the cartoon does the best service for this as it better matches the light-hearted tone of the Silver Age and also manages to enhance it. I'll take the fun tribute versus the "no fun boy" pseudo-tribute. I don't like how Morrison uses old ideas because it's a reference in a style that is really about making fun of those uses rather than has fun with them. It's why I like this show and the tie-in comic.

I thought Morrison's idea was interesting: how do you take a quirky golden age element of Batman and make it modern (i.e. dark)? The Brave and the Bold fleshed out the original story and continued their loving tributes to the bizarre stories in the history of Batman.

Colourful alien, because it's not just an excuse to be gritty and dark without compromising the actual character.

When Zur En Arrh popped up in the first Chip Zdarsky story, I thought 'oh wow didn't see that coming! Silver age redux cool! Bet Grant Morrison didn't write about him!'. And now I find he did. The things you forget. D'oh!

I remember reading Batman RIP and getting completely bewildered by the Zur en Ar thing. I had zero context for that, and the comic was in no Rush to explain.

I like the colorful alien version just seems like a fun thing. while the zur en arh was a fun thing in RIP and Chip Zdarsky seems to be making his batman run revolve around that idea.

With the effort to reimagine the Batman of Zur En Arrh as edgy and grounded, the artist couldn't reimagine the gaudy yellow sleeves as bare arms? It's the first thing I would do.

I feel like the best way to modernize Tlalo/Batman of Zur-En-Arrh would be to set him in the Legion of Superheroes era. Make him be inspired by a bat-like creature of his own world and reading of the Batman of Earth from a thousand years ago, which is where gets his interlac and english name Batman instead of whatever it'd be in his own world's language(s), and he operates on his world but occasionally helps the Legion, perhaps as a detective most of all

To be perfectly honest with everyone!! I really like the original version of The Batman of Zur-En-Arrh as an alien version of Batman. But I really don’t care for the newer reimagined version of the character as just a crazy backup split personality of Batman (because I really don’t like how having Batman of Zur-En-Arrh being a split personality of Batman would just make him look more like Moon Knight)

It kinda seems like they made this cartoon for you. I'm always amazed at the knowledge you have about comics. I wonder how many people would know 1/8 of the stuff you know about these comics. And then you add the humor. And no politics. I love you're videos. They're always fun. Thank you.
