Batman has featured many versions of the villain Clayface. DC Comics boasts upwards of 8 different Clayfaces. However some fans feel that the best Clayface doesn't come from the comics. Where does he hail from? Some say the animated tv series The Batman. This Clayface was Ethan Bennett, a police officer and childhood friend of Bruce Wayne. His transformation at the hands of the Joker was one the series highlights and his arc stuck with many. We discuss Ethan and whether he is indeed the best Clayface here on Casually Comics!

@MoostachedSaiyanPrince 6 ай бұрын
@@JanFWehThey have similar origins, but they diverge when it comes to virtually everything else. Ethan had shape shifting powers, Two-Face has burn scars and a complex when it comes to duality and chance. Ethan is a revenge driven monster who wants to kill the man who changed him, Two-Face is a mob boss that is constantly arguing against himself. Yeah, they come from similar backrounds, but their goals, actions, abilities, how they were turned into monsters and even how far gone they are all different. Plus there's already a lot of characters that are practically copycats in the actual DC comics too. Like the multiple Batman villains that are all pretty much knockoffs of him, Clue Master, that one Flash villain with a freeze gun whose name escapes me. Most comic book characters are similar to other characters in one way or another, but there's usually more under the hood to help these characters differentiate themselves.

Eh, for Basil in the series, it wasn't so much that he thought improving his appearance would make him a better actor, it was that he was diluted and thought he WAS a good actor and that the only reason he wasn't getting roles was that he wasn't conventionally attractive, which is why he transforms into a more attractive guy later and still gets turned down and he goes off about how he can look like anyone now.

To me I kinda saw Basil as a dark counterpart to Bennett as both of theme are quick to make foolish choices or think their actions will make something good out of it but the only difference was Bennett saw the downside of his powers and his self righteous behaviour did to him well Basil saw being a Villain as a golden ticket showing Basil as a warning to what Bennett would become had he fail to see his mistakes

Oh boy! Ethan is certainly a contender for best Clayface in my mind, so glad you finally got him on The Claylist! Shame you didn't show his Meltdown speech about how being Ethan had become so much harder than being Clayface, that's his best speech (next to his best line, "What's become of us?") If you want some Batman 2004 episodes worth looking into, try these: "Seconds" (Dave Foley as Clock King) "Q&A" (a weirdly dark/moody episode with Glen Shadix as Cluemaster) "Swamped" (Ron Perlman as Paramilitary Killer Croc, shows the detective side of this batman a bit better) "Strange Minds" (The Joker's head episode, plus Hugo Strange voiced by the '66 Riddler!) "Cash for Toys" (knock-off Toyman) "Riddled/Riddler's Revenge" (Manson Riddler and his origin)

Hot take, but I think prefer A Matter of Family to the Emmy winning Robin’s Reckoning. A) we don’t have to waste time with a framing device and it’s more concise overall. B) the Haley and John Grayson characters are merged so that Zucco threatens Grayson directly which makes everything more personal. C) Zucco is given more depth when he insinuates he accidentally killed his father in a knife throwing routine gone wrong. We also get Kevin Conroy as John Grayson and Mark Hamill as Tony Zucco which is fun. The parents death scene is arguably more graphic than the BTAS version. Don’t get me wrong, I love Robin’s Reckoning, I just think this episode is really good too.

The "I slipped" bit hits really hard especially if you have experience with mental illnesses or addiction. Sometimes it is really just a slip up and it makes you feel so much worse when you've worked hard on something and the moment you make a mistake it's like everyone looses trust in you again. Making it harder to keep trying. It's also completely understandable from Bruce's perspective because even just a slip up can have huge consequences on both their life and on everyone around them. It makes Bennet seem very real. This show has much deeper plot lines and better writing than I expected.

This video actually helped resolve an issue I had with Clayface back in the day. As a kid watching this series as it came out (pre-streaming and I didn’t have a DVR) the episode where Ethan posed as Solomon Grundy always felt out of character for me and I chalked it up to bad writing. However, after watching this video did I learn about the episode “Meltdown”, which I never watched. Thank you for filling in that gap.

Even though Basil and Matt are seen more often as Clayface, Ethan was the first one I was really exposed too, and stuck around in my mind decades later. He was used sparingly, but I kinda wish he stayed Clayface, and was like Static Shock's version of Rubberband-Man, who was a villain, but he reformed, and STAYED reformed.

It’s a tragic that the Batman is forgotten because the animated series is what comes to mind when it comes to Batman shows and when you hear the name the Batman people will think you’re talking about the movie that is called the batman

Since you mentioned the Justice League period of The Batman, could you perhaps cover that? I kinda liked how Bats was the driving force behind the League coming together, while Superman was reluctant to work with others. A bit of a departure from the usual dynamic of the Batman as the loner archetype.

@@jturner2577 Yeah, Superman being the loner is refreshing. And it doesn't seem too out of character. It's weird that DC pushes Batman as the loner archetype - Despite having a bigger roster of: "Totally not sidekicks" than Superman.

This version of Clayface really reminds me a lot of how Sandman had been building up to in the late 90s to almost present day as a reformed villain who was in the path of being in Silver Sable's Wildpack to then going fully as a hero by being put into the reserve list of the Avengers

I knew I wasn’t crazy! Years ago I remember seeing some art (maybe concept art?) of Ethan with that half faced clayface look and anytime I try to find that image again it just isn’t around. Ethan is one of my favourite adaptations of clayface aside from Btas, there’s a beautiful sense of body horror from the origin episodes and I’d love to see more Batman villains either under a different context like Ethan or the og characters are played with in future adaptations. I hope we get to see Bennet and Yin again they were just great characters overall.

The best joke in the show is when Joker drops Ethan Bennett from a rooftop to hear the sound of him going splat, and when Ethan hits the ground as Clayface, Joker is like "Wowza! Now THAT was a splat!"

This is one of the many practical reasons why I like it when original and/or expy characters are put into an adaptation of a pre-existing thing as opposed to changing absolutely anything, especially sexual orientations nowadays, of a pre-existing character that's already in that thing and ruining them because of it.

Here's a random fun fact! in the episode where Clayface is on trial his lawyer looks awfully like Aaron Eckhart's Harvey Dent, which i wonder if it was intentional since that episode was written by Greg Weisman who likes to sneak on cameos from the other comics lore

I think he’s the more interesting because as many form clayface has sorta break the typical mold Even his clay was a spooky white with redemption. It sorta melt me, not with joker puty but also to tear because I could relate to a little bit. Also batman can jump, Bruce has mad hops. This clayface help make, show, mold, Bruce. A new mold for claylist, he’s not a monster but a human with creative ideas.

I personally love most of the changes made to the villains in the show. The forest nymph was a neat look for Ivy. Freeze looked awesome. And Joker wasn't just some twink in a purple suit. Every villain actually seemed like a one v one with a 6 foot 5 jacked dude in body armor was a decent matchup

I started watching The Batman after your last video on it, very pleasantly surprised. Heard good things, but wasn't expecting a show with such a consistent forward momentum and strong focus on Bruce Wayne. I still have to watch season 5 (which I haven't heard great things about) but so far it's definitely stood out as a really strong adaptation.

I rewatched the series last year because it has been years since I had seen it and I had never finished it I get why there weren't any women in this version of the justice league for legal reasons due to other projects but man did this batman justice league feel a little sexist due to the lack of women in it
