Alone in an ancient wilderness Hilma Baron must survive with naught but her wits. As massive creatures move through the woods the creeping cold will kill just as fast. In this new series we will attempt to jumpstart civilization again in the land before time. If Hilma fails and falls to the many dangers our next survivor will take up the challenge using what Hilma managed to create so far.

Time, even under the best of circumstances, is weird. These, Hilma thinks as she stands in the cave entrance, are hardly the best of circumstances. She’d been working on her basket, barely aware of the time passing, maybe even taking a little comfort from the simple, repetitive task, when something, suddenly, seemed very wrong. Like the way your spatial sense shifts after catching a sudden gust of wind under your rotors; the world tilting around you. She’d gone outside to check, and while there had been nothing to see, the sense of wrongness had only gotten stronger. Nope, she’d thought, turning around. Like her primitive ancestors, she’d feel safe inside the cave next to her fire. She’d been thinking of her primitive ancestors a lot lately. Would they be proud of how much she’d already done, or would they laugh at her sad little pile of leaves and itchy grass skirt? Proud, she’d decided, as she contemplated her stock of food. She had fire, water and food. So there, ancestors. The squeal had come out of nowhere. Do dinosaurs squeal, she’d wondered. Maybe there was an injured animal out there. As much as she hated the idea of harming something, she needed to eat and surely an already injured creature would be easier to kill. She could put it out of its misery and get some food at the same time. Grabbing her spear, she’d headed out yet again. Now, as she stands in the entrance to the cave, spear clutched in her hands, time gets very weird. She feels as if she’s at the very center of an old clock, standing still while the face with its number spins around her. There is something teasing at her memory…. The shimmering portal pops into existence a few feet away and then vanishes, but it’s enough. Enough for Hilma to remember that same shimmer, that same flicker of some color she can’t name. It had been the last thing she’d seen after those…those Things had rushed her as she rode her horse toward their twisted tower. I could go back. The thought is insistent, so insistent that Hilma takes a step forward. The sound of a twig snapping under her feet pulls her up short. What the hell is she thinking? Sure, she could go back, but what if “back” isn’t where she ends up. Those Things had come from somewhere else, after all. A memory hits her-thick foul air, overwhelming heat and the way she’d been so slow and they’d been so fast. And pain. So much pain. That had just been their outpost in her own world. What, she wonders, would their own world be like? And if there were three worlds-hers, theirs and this one-what was to say there weren’t more? Worlds with even worse atmospheres or no air at all. Worlds with crushing gravity. Worlds with beings who could help her or kill her or worse. A portal flickers into being right in the entrance to the cave. Time stands still. Stay or go? Here or there? In the end, it’s not a difficult decision at all. Maybe if it had happened a few days ago, when she was naked and starving and so so thirsty, she would have risked it. But now? As she turns to head back into the cave, back towards warmth and light and her accomplishments, she smiles a little. Yeah, she thinks, her ancestors would be proud. *** I just banged this out, so it’s a bit rough. Thanks for the inspiration and all your hard work!

If your food is frozen, it might be wiser to keep it upstairs, don't you think? Well, if it's something that won't get mushy when thawed out, at least. Underground is usually cool, so it keeps food longer during the rest of the year. But in the winter - or very early spring - when everything is frozen outside, you probably want to keep frozen food frozen. (Even if it's something that _does_ get mushy when thawed out, I think you can cook it from a frozen state without it getting mushy.) Otherwise, yeah, you want to keep everything cool - so, not right next to the fire.

A bandana is probably your best bet for mouth warmth only 2 rags to be made, which can be made out of any kind of 80 thread/plant fibre/sinew per 1 rag etc, only gives 5 mouth protection but that will make all the difference, and obviously you can craft multiple and wear 2. You can also change it into a head bandana and wear them on your head. Harvesting hickory roots (Interact with a hickory tree with a digging stick or better) in buches of 10 can be used to make "salt" and from that salt you can keep crafting and reverse crafting salt and salty water, to get your applied science up, i think you need like 3 applied science before you can tan hides.

Now that you have a blanket, you probably won't need to keep the fire at night. Instead of wearing the blanket, drop it were you want to sleep and the game will give you notification that you used it for warmth, even better it will warm your whole body that way, including your head and mouth, simulating your character going fully under the blanket.

Oh and see if you can make like some kind of storage shelves to put your food on so that it's away from the fire so at night they can freeze and stay fresh instead of going bad next to the fire

A bone shiv would be a big help, as you found a bone. Yikes, that portal storm... I can see her thinking at first that the screaming was a dinosaur of some kind, caught in that, and being harmed by it (more then enough to drive one back underground), but then the realization that the screaming was sometimes coming from the ground itself, as if it was time and reality that was being tortured... that is next level.

Although there is a grass called bluegrass, it's actually common to Europe and a few other places, as it was spread by the Spanish in the New World However, as much as I like the grass products being blue, bluegrass is still grass and is very green Thanks for the upload Rycon, I'm definitely liking this one so far :D

i wanted to ask this while the episode is swill new. what are your plans for end game? stuff like canning and jarring with the glass jars. there is a way for your to make those out of raw materials, do you intend to do it? the big point is metal. the game is built on metal it's basically as important and used as rags. there is the possibility to mine and refine metals from the ground but it's an entire ordeal, do you intend to do so? for me the point of this series is the monumental advancement you do which in a regular playthrough is basic stuff. this series is the perfect opportunity to focus on base building and crafting set ups which at least I and maybe others would love to see as it's a real struggle to do. *You can jump to the TL;DR to get the summary of the problem it will present to the RP series. I sincerely suggest that you read at least that section, should you see it, Rycon.* I did a little research about the Portal Storms, since I remembered then trying to implement them- or something nearly identical- before... and it making the game effectively unplayable in a wide variety of situations. Unfortunately, it seems that they are functionally the same as I remember- there are random effects that can basically render you SOL because you decided to play the game. The devs- and the singular dev above them- absolutely have the right to design the game how they want. I just feel like they are increasingly making decisions that aren't really for the best in terms of long term playability, particularly for anyone that *doesn't* like the idea of starting a new game every few (in game) weeks. It'd be one thing if there were ways to reduce the problems that go with surviving in one world for more than a week or two, but they've largely gone for adding problems. Even if it's not as bad as it was at the peak of the "realism above fun," some of the decisions still seem greatly in favor of people who prefer to start over frequently, despite the presented mantra of "if you can do it in real life, you should be able to do it in the game,¹" implying that survival in the long term should be possible.(¹Unless it would be too fun, or too convenient, as has been the case for removed features before...) It's especially a problem if you are someone who got into the game when long-term survival and/or the idea of a "stable end game" was a good reason to get into the game... TL;DR: In short, it seems the devs are adding all problems, no solutions. The Portal Storms are 100% a case of this trend. Not only can monsters in them sense you via smell and hearing, but they recently changed it so they spawn even if you are inside, meaning that they come inside to find you- and will break down barriers like walls to do so. This includes *GROUPS* of Unseen Hunters, Flaming Eyes and Hounds of Tindalos. Even in combination with one another. This is stated as particularly being a problem on Innawood, and combined with the extreme frequency of the storms (many people are reporting storms happening immediately after one another, or with breaks as short as two days) it makes it extremely difficult to progress on maps with minimal shelter. And shelter on Innawood is also often not compatible with the shelters that stopped these issues on the main map. Also of note is that the Portal Storms currently have *zero positive trade off.* None. While the dev says that they are "planning" on "eventually enabling a playstyle" that would benefit from the Portal Storms, they go on to admit that they haven't even started any planning for it. Let alone any implementation, or even pre-implementation processes. Meaning that the Portal Storms are an extreme, game ending threat particularly for maps meant to be isolated from pre-built structures, with literally zero potential to come out of the event with more than you went in with, and every likelihood of dying due to the fact the feature was extremely incomplete and imbalanced when it was implemented. The dev for Portal Storms even attempted to add a mod to disable them, but the main devs refused under the idea that it was better to opt players in by default, in order to "make them fun so players don't want to turn them off." Given how incomplete the feature is, I greatly suggest disabling further storms, and playing it off as a side effect of the Mi-go teleporting Hilma there. The developer of the feature said that it can be removed by opening the .json and removing, "EOC_PORTAL_STORM_WARN_OR_CAUSE_RECURRING" (remove the quotation marks)

I definitely agree with a lot of what you've said here in terms of how DDA has developed. It's honestly one of the reasons I've spent more and more time with Bright Nights. While my experiences with the portal storms haven't been too bad, I can definitely see them being a pretty unfair and anti-climactic end for Hilma, given the tools she has available (and will likely have available in the near future). I'd second turning them off or decreasing frequency by a whole lot, if the latter is possible.

Great series! Really enjoy the storytelling. I believe the crafting slowdown you saw when making the second sheet was due to your hand encumbrance. Hand encumbrance has a big effect on crafting speed, along with (I believe) focus and tiredness, and you were also Dead Tired at the time.

make a bone shiv for butchering and you should try and hunt something like a coyote as it will attack back and not run away allowing you to kill it, and that portal storm just happened to me too today, i had no clue what was going on and went out there and alien grass started growing everywhere before the game crashed to desktop lol

Your lucky, those portal stores can last like a week. Unfortunately, they are hard coded to start at day 6 or 7 everytime. I did multiple tests and I've read other people having the same issues. If you didn't have the cave, you'd probably be dead or close to it.

I wonder if you make seeds and sneak up to the turkeys, could you trick them that your cool by feeding them then strike? I bet it would hurt Hilma in her heart to do that but what is needed is needed

I like to think when you peeked out of the cave and ended up with yourself technically being outside was the world breaking. Maybe Hilma was too confused and worried about this off feeling to really think 'How am I outside?'

It's a shame you cant put stuff in the pot before you fill it in water. That makes more sense than dragging the pot around. You can do this Hilma!
