From big stages to small patio gigs the Catalina Club is the choice for versatility. Joe Mazza, Gretsch drummer and Product Specialist, hangs with the other Gretsch drummers to discuss features and benefits of this great kit.
Gretsch's Catalina Club Rock kit features mahogany shells and 30 degree bearing edges for a deep, warm, classic rock sound. This 4-piece configuration gets back to groove basics with big drums for big grooves. The 13" tom is mounted onto the bass drum with Gretsch's ball-socket single tom holder for efficient tom placement and stability. This tom also includes mini GTS tom suspension system to maximize tonal resonance. The mahogany shells feature an exterior basswood ply to provide a consistent overall finish. UV gloss lacquer is applied over deep ebony color via a multi-step finishing process to produce a glassy, reflective shine.
Since 1883, Gretsch drums have earned a time-honored reputation for producing drums that are innovative, distinctive and unsurpassed in tone. The Gretsch sound component has a personality all its own and has been showcased throughout modern music history by drum legends who demand nothing but the best. This sound has often been imitated, but never equaled. The sound is so compelling and distinctive that drummers regard it simply as "That Great Gretsch Sound™." Many custom options are available and include sizes, finishes and unique hardware design features.

I am 66 years old. Started playing drums at age 11 out of sheer love for them. I’m basically a self taught drummer as I played trumpet and baritone horn all through school. I now own three drum sets. A Sonor Force 3001, Tama Superstar Classic Maple, and this amazing lil Gretsch Cat Club set in gloss crimson burst. My other two kits are feeling a bit bummed out cuz I can’t stop playing these Gretsch’s. To me they sound like the great sounding Ludwig kits of the forties through the sixties. I’m totally in love with them! 🥰🥰🥰

Wonderful video! I would also like a tour of the Catalina manufacturing in the DW factory in Taiwan. My Catalina Club Jazz kit is amazing! Thank you Gretsch. My first jazz drum instructor introduced me to Gretsch in 1966. I've loved Gretsch ever since!

I use my Gretsch Catalina Club Jazz kit for 80% of my gigs. And I also own USA Customs and New Classics! What I found out is that these shells sound better with age. I've owed mine since '09, added the 10" tom, and played everything from large Rock stages to coffee house Bossa gigs. Love this kit, it's perfect.

I use a Sonor Safari kit. The bass drum is 16"x16". The key is that the riser enables the bass drum to be totally off the floor and allows the drum not to be muffled and therefore project especially with the help of a bass drum microphone.

Bought the Catalina set and added the mounted tom option for the kit in our studio. We change the heads, beaters, cymbals and do a lot of tuning depending upon the music genre. We always use the same mics but sometimes need to change positioning and can get about whatever we need out of the kit to match the genre for each product. We hire drummers who have some "ears" and they can make this kit really talk.

Doing that changes the feel of the beater. I don't bother with the riser. I like the feel and sound of it hitting off center.

OK, I see alotta haters out here in the comments... I've ordered this kit on clearance from GC in a BEAUTIFUL marine pearl finish, the kit itself LOOKS like it should cost a lot more than how much it is... as far as the SOUND goes, I'd put Pinstripes on the front side and Ambassadors on the resonance for all drums (with a hazy on the snare side) to get a similar sound across the board, and with some tighter tuning I've got a pretty decent little funk/R&B kit... for jazz I'd just tune down a bit and possibly switch the bass drum head for one of those Fiberskyns... Does anyone have a better recommendation for ~500 USD? Without scouring the used section of Craigslist for months on end & driving to neighborhoods I don't belong in lol? The kit itself sounds pretty FAT due to the mahogany wood, and I know I know, it's made in Taiwan not USA, but what are you gonna do guy? I didn't source the materials to make the drum myself so I can't complain... the only other kit I'm looking at is the Pork Pie little squealer USA made Maple kit for about twice the price, BUT it doesn't come in that beautiful marine pearl color that's for damn sure lol

Fabulous little kit....just use good quality cymbals. Today’s 2020 Special Edition Catalinas, are really something special. They sound like very expensive drums.

2:20 - I don't like the beater going past the upright position to strike the head. I played this kit today and that beater hitting the head like that really bothered me. It's very awkward to play bass drum like that. Do they expect drummers to be ok with this? It's RIDICULOUSLY bad...

I think that the riser creates a problem with the bassdrum-pedal and beater. As you can see if you pause on 2.19, the bass drum-pedal is oversteering and therefore creates an unrealistic feel to the bass drum(I think). It also really tear on your beater very fast. As to what they are saying about the hight of the beater wether you're using the riser or not, I believe that if you take it off, you only need to lower the beater on your pedal, therefore I have taken my riser away from the kit.

"kit comes with a raiser so that the beater hits in the sweet spot" Or you could just lower the fucking beater
