I too raced with no tire warmers in the mid 90's and one of the critical learning curves for me was how fast to go on the first lap with cold tires. I'm very grateful for that lesson as it gave me the knowledge and skills to leverage when the warmers failed. The warmers I have had the best longevity with are Moto-D and they also have a warranty on them.

Most warmers do have a thermostat set at 180F that you can leave at that temp all day, some offer more choices. Tire manufacturers suggest time periods for warmers at those temps after a lot of research and testing, most from 30-50 minutes only. Would you like to be wrapped at 180F for 7 hours?

Thanks for the reply Dave. I meant more for people running sessions at a track day if they were to just keep the warmers set to the Hot temp (assuming the org is running three 20 min sessions) then they'd most likely have the warmers on and ready to rock with approx 30 mins on hot (the extra 10 mins due to takeoff of warmers, staging to grid, return to pit area, setup on stands and yes, cleaning tires - good point!) in between sessions. However - it is good to note that leaving the warmers on Hot over lunch time (when the bike might be sitting for 1.5 hours depending on how the day is run) might be a little excessive. I'm in the habit of setting the warmers to Warm when I return to the pits before lunch and then switching them back to Hot before I suit up. Seems to work out OK and I rarely, if ever, forget to switch them back. As always - thanks for all the great info and insight!!

Mike - on a 4 group format of 15 minutes that is fine. With a 3 group format if the temp is above 95F, then sun on the wheels will maintain the heat in the tires In the end, do what makes you happy and stick with it as when you roll out on the track, you need to focus on skills not be concerned with things you may or may not have done.

You can get to optimal temperatures in less than 10 minutes of riding. With the bike at 90 degrees to the sun so both wheel get hot, you could be at temperature within 2 laps. See if you can acquire tyre warmers that are broken as they will most certainly help keeping the heat in the tyre and ensuring UV has minimal impact.

I emailed Dunlop and asked about warmers for the q3+'s. They told me there is no benefit to using warmers on those at all as they are designed to heat up quite quickly on the road

@@kaargh6924 Yes, that is their comment. In the end it comes down to us and how we master our emotions/brain. If warmers are used to make us "feel" better they should be on low. The beauty is we can choose what we want given the information we gather.

Ride. If the 60 series turns better for you - nothing needed. If you feel it turns too fast, change the fork position to flatten the bike out.

Yes, it is noteworthy so going out on track the rubber is slightly over optimal BUT, tires lose heat quickly if you do not keep them under load so a little diligence on the out lap would bring things back in line and then a temp check after 4 laps will create worthwhile data points on carcass temps.

Unfortunately there is no rule of thumb with street tires so you have to sit on them :) . With race, you would be correct with your sequence and wording.

You need to know how hot they get and then how long the tires need to be at that heat level prior to setting hot pressures. If you get the timing right, no it is not bad. If you have them on full heat in the middle of summer, that might not be favorable, so them you set an amount of time they are on prior to going on track.

I've raced with track temps in the 40F range and been 2psi lower off the warmers to get the right temps in the carcass. You cannot let cold air slow you down BUT you have to see what the track gives you for grip at those low temps.

As long as you know what your warmers draw for current/power, you can use any generator. You may need a 1000 but most use a 2000 so it doesn't stress the generator.

Ask your tire vendor. Each tire manufacturer has different recommendations.

Cold to hot temps for road tires would be ambient to 50C. For track tires they should come off track at 60-65C in the braking and drive portions of the tyre.

i run a racing side car, we normally run around 111-13 psi cold temps

Here are products that have done their job 100% after three years of use with me (ie 100 plus track days a year). Moto-D, Chicken Hawk, Woodcraft. Capit have just been received but I have no long term data on them.

You can but you need to do it immediately or before the pace changes to slower speeds as you will lose heat.

Most manufacturers have warmers for 160 and 200 sizes. Check Chicken Hawk, Woodcraft and MotoD
