Last week you watched us bond the starboard hull side on - and the procedure looked seamless - but a lot went into it beforehand.
*Dry fit of hull sides - filmed on July 06
*Bonding port hull side - filmed on July 25
We hope you enjoy!!
Much love from Annapolis!

Just wanted to tell you about a technic to fill your pastry bag with you two own hands and keeping the top edges clean. Grab the open bag half way in the middle. Wrap the upper part oven your hand , fill the bag with a spatula scrapping it on your covered index finger or thumb, when the bag is 2/3 full straighten the upper part of the bag and twist it to squeeze your epoxy out. The main thing I am taking away here is this, when you are done, you will know EVERY inch of this boat! Inside, outside, systems, pipes, wires, everything. If you ever have a problem, let's face it all boats eventually do, you will know exactly how to deal with it and where to look first. That is going to be a great feeling out on the water.

you guys are doing the best thing by doing the build yourself because there's a lot of cats that's been having major problems and with you having first hand knowledge of every square inch of your boat. You will be able to diagnose anything that goes wrong in any part of your boat. I love your dedication to the project. Thank you for sharing.

Today, watching the sections slide together with you guys pushing and pulling, I realized, and was surprised that, I don't see any cuts, pinches, raspberries, or abrasions on your heads, hands, legs, or anywhere. That's amazing considering all the rough edges, tight quarters, ducking, and climbing. I've come to assume that you, in fact, have stunt doubles doing the actual work and occasionally show yourselves doing some working (for show). After all, we can't have the stars injured! Haha, just kidding. But how do you keep from banging yourselves up during all of this??

If I were a potential future builder of one of these boats watching this video I might say "Gee, it would be easier to put the sides on if the bulkheads weren't in the way", so for documentation purposes is there a reason to install the bulkheads first? That being said, I think you have done an admirable job of mounting these. The use of extension cord was pure genius. However, I wouldn't want to be the one splicing all those lengths of cord back together again.

(im 7 minutes into the video) i must, obviously, be missing something, but i cant understand why those bulkheads couldnt have a larger cutoff to allow for an easier entry for the hull topside. would it compromise it structurally?! one could easily epoxy in "the missing section" of said bulkhead and glass it over, as im sure all the bulkead/hull joints are going to be. sure it would be more work but also a smoother process and a less stressfull joint between the lower and upper topside.

I once read a story about a farmers wife that used a big old style stainless steel milk jug which she sometimes mounted to her husbands work pickup, half fill with laundry, water and laundry soap. As hubby drove about the farm doing his daily chores the laundry sloshed about enough to clean itself. She would later just need to rinse and hang to dry. It seems to me a sailboat underway with a small plastic barrel of water mounted at the bow would make a decent washing machine. At least well enough to replace bags of stored dirty laundry in hot weather. Anyone know of any sailors that has tried something similar? I am sending this to multiple sites.

Don’t know where we’d be as a species without lips and flanges. “Seams” the build process around bonding joints could be improved using a tape adhesive method instead of running a bead with pastry bags.

In the beginning of the build I remember Matt saying the methacrylate bonding agent was (or should be)extremely strong. Now that you have used it so much, does it live up to your expectations? Have you been able to test the results? Did you use some left over on scrap pieces of fiberglass to see how strong your mixture is? I'm curious about it.
@MJSailing
@MJSailing 2 жыл бұрын
Each time we've gone to do a bonding project, the day before, we will do a test section on fiberglass to make sure the batch has not gone bad, that it's fully curing, and that it's holding its strength. From what we've seen so far on these test it looks to be incredibly strong and we should not have to worry about issues of separation.
@MJSailing
@MJSailing 2 жыл бұрын
We've done a few distraction test and the failure is always with the substrate - the fiberglass tears away. We're not worried about the strength of these bonds (they are engineered to be in the low stress parts of the build). But I am worried about the gap and the gelcoat that finishes this off. The Methacrylate has a 120% elongation and gelcoat is around 3%. If these areas flex -they won't break- they may crack the gelcoat finish. If that happens well have to glass the exterior joints. Keep in mind that this isnt a new process. Boat manufacturers have been doing these joints for years without issue. This just has more of them. Matt
