CATAMARAN BUILD - 48 Hours In & We're THIS Far! (MJ Sailing - Ep 179)

We're only 48 hours into having the first set of components for our catamaran, and she's already starting to come together and look like a boat!
Follow along as we work tirelessly to get all the components unloaded from the container - and fail miserably at our time allowance. But honestly, that part soon matters less and less to us because we have a great group of people working their butts off to make sure every piece is taken off carefully and doesn't receive any damage.
36 hours later, we gather a few of them back to put the main pieces of the hull together while we still have access to the telehandler. And once we snap those few pieces together - Voilà she's already looking like a boat!!
We hope you enjoy!
Much love from Annapolis!

You'll be amazed how long the "starts looking like a boat, ain't it?" phase will last before the "lookalike" will be past for the last time, with a "looks like a boat _on the outside at least_ " phase in between. They're brave to take on that task, prefab or not. I'm looking forward for sure.

Getting stuff out of the container and into the tent was a combination of exciting and stressful. Having great friends (and the right equipment) made all the difference. Having the tent for the build is immeasurably helpful. So satisfying to see so much of the build appearing to happen so fast. That'll give an adrenaline boost that will be necessary to carry through the small details for the next period of the build. Now you can just sleep in the two outboard hull sections! So fun though!!!

When I first saw the opening of the container I was worried. It looked like all the parts had been carelessly put in there, and hope for the best for the journey. But clearly I misjudged the factory. They had been skilfully and safely mounted, and well protected for the journey. Well, that's a start. Come on. Chop chop. I want to see the finish. Are we nearly there yet???? Good luck on your project.

The boat looks awesome. Yes, it’s a massive amount of work to get it sailing, but I have zero doubt that this will get finished within the planned time frame, or perhaps even sooner. I’ve built 3 multihulls, refitted many, including the cat we now live on, designed some, helped with hundreds of boat projects and been sailing for about 50 years. That experience means I can normally tell quite early in the process how it will work out. The kit looks like it was made competently and with the right helping pieces and instructions. When the sequence and methods are all planned, like this seems to be, you avoid the vast amount of time that is normally wasted on trying to figure out how to get the next step done. You guys are also obviously the right type of people to take on a project like this. Of course you will get to points where the task feels a bit heavy, but I really think you will be able to feel the motivation and joy of creating something amazing all the way through the build. You were also lucky with the timing of the build, I’d say. These times are hostile to long distance cruising. Yesterday we had to change our cruising plans for this year. This is the perfect time to spend building. By the time you’re ready to sail, let’s hope the world has become a bit less insane.

Before I became part of our own solar electric catamaran in Bangladesh, I watched and shared, to my friends, saying, 'look man, only a couple' and I come back here oftentimes. We built the vessel, it is doing fine, and why not everyone is not making such a thing is the question that baffles me, all the time.

Awesome work guys, however not without an unhealthy amount of risk during the demobilizing from the container. If you ever have to repeat such a situation, arrange for a 40 foot open top container where everything can be safely removed in a quick fashion with a crane. I know they are a bit more expensive in regards to shipping costs but certainly a benefit in reducing risks of fatalities and or damage to hull sections. Another benefit if possible is to arrange a single jib section lifting for the telehandler. So much more control during lifts.

Job well done 😎. For the next container you might want to look at it being delivered with a side loader. I.E truck drops the container on the ground and leaves for it's next job, then comes back to pick up the empty container the next day. That way you only pay for container delivery and pick up, and possibly an extra days hire on the container. You will not be paying for the truck and driver to be doing nothing for 6+ hours. Also with the container on the ground it makes things a lot easier. I.E using trolleys or dolly's with pneumatic tyres (your working on gravel) to help shift large articles out of the container. Another suggestion is to removal the fork and backstay assembly from the tele-handler. This well give better clearance into the container and you can then use slings to lift whatever it is you are trying to move from a center point inside the container.
