Wow, can you believe we are hitting episode 200??!! It seems like just a few weeks ago that I started shyly picking up a camera as we were in the middle of the aluminum boat refit - not sure what I would say or if anyone would find it worth watching. But, nearly 5 years later, here we are!!
Matt and I open the tent doors and fit on the nose cones to make sure everything is still aligned when we do the dry fits of the hull sides. Once it is determined that the way we'd set it up to bond still allows us to seamlessly put the cones on - it's time to get to work.
Our friends Brian and Summer make their way over to Kent Island just after sunrise on one cool morning, and with one test run and a lot of team work, we manage to get the starboard outer hull side on just within the 40-60 minute window we have to work with our methacrylate bonding agent.
One side down and one to go!!
*Fitting on the nose cones - filmed on July 15
*Bonding starboard hull side - filmed on July 18
We hope you enjoy!!
Much love from Annapolis!

I’ve being watching your channel since you started with the cat build. Awesome, hard but rewarding at the end!! After seeing Parlay Revival Lagoon 45 and Sailing Zingaro wheat their cat bulkheads collapsed near Hawaii, now I understand your bulkheads reinforcements! Also today on Sailing Zigaro, a Lagoon 50 also with bulkheads problems. Good luck, keep up the great work!!!

Something I like to do is bring people who have not been around boats, especially boats larger than 20', to a boat yard and walk around. Surprise! I have a picture of mine with a tall man on my bridge, he is in the shadow, but I point him out to show the size of Buena Ventura. Hope you had a good time away from the heat.

Another winner of a video. You guys have gotten really good at building a "narrative" into these videos. I was *stressed* during the bonding! The catamaran looks absolutely SICK with the bow caps on. That is going to be a gorgeous boat. We can't wait to see the blue waters skimming across the bow either. I guess we're with you for the next 3 years at least! ;-) I was thinking it was good to test the bow pieces on a calm day. Those doors could be murder even with a fairly benign breeze!

3 more years!!! Who knows where any of us will be in 3 years time. The craft looks seaworthy right now, so, snap those bow caps into place, throw some provisions onboard, rig a makeshift sail, cut some holes in the sides (above the waterline) for oars, and launch this baby! Heck, Thor Heyerdahl started with less on Kon-Tiki. OR, keep doin' what you're doin'--it's coming along beautifully.

Keep your resin in the refrigerator. It will increase your pot life by quite a bit. I had a marine fabrication company for 27 years and that’s what we did with all our proxies polyesters everything in the summer two slow the cure rate down. Even after mixing you can stick it back in the refrigerator or freezer to help extend the pot life.
@mkllove
@mkllove 2 жыл бұрын
I did the same doing work in a military lab, but don't ever use the fridge for anything like food or beverages ! The volatiles/outgassing components penetrate everything including plastic walls of fridge and insulation. Had a new employee use the food fridge by mistake... (in spite of signs) they didn't stay on the job long after that F'up !
@solexxx8588
@solexxx8588 2 жыл бұрын
Bad Idea. When you take the resin out of the the refrigerator, the humidity in the air will condense on your resin. You don't want water in your layup.
@mkllove
@mkllove 2 жыл бұрын
@@solexxx8588 Not applicable to my case, I was in an AC controlled lab environment. Understand issue with large layup in an outside environment where multiple layers could trap moisture unless mixed resin kept in sealed container and allowed to equalize to room temps.

Not very possible with methacrylates. Too cold and they become solid, or more like cheese. Most mma’s also need at least 15 degrees C or 59 F to cure properly. But they did very well.

"... seeing all that turquois waters coming up over this bow ...." That's how You teach people building boats: make 'em see and feel and wish for a future destination behind the horizon, make 'em curious for the other side of the pond. Using saws and brushes and all is only done right once You know why You do it. Also: That thing is _huge_ : thus it will still be a comfy liveaboard once it's in the water.

In the aviation industry, we use something called B-1/2 or B-2 for sealing aircraft doubler plates and windows. It comes in caulking tubes and activated with a drill. The number references the cure time 1/2 an hour or 2 hours, etc. Might be something to look into.

You two are a great team, and your friends helping make a world of difference on the days when 4 hands simply are not enough. The care and extra effort you are expending now to make sure all the fitment is as good as you can make it, and planning the big steps as thoroughly as you do will add up to a better boat in the end, in my opinion. You guys have honed your skills with the other projects and this one will add even more to your resume as legit "boat builders" When she is done, and you are sailing away in her, maybe on a long crossing it might be worth the effort to assemble a few 30 min videos of the whole build, condensing the build process into a couple of hours. That would be nice to set aside and put a copy of it with the build book for those who might become her caretakers down the road. Maybe earmarking steps you want to include now...just throwing out an idea here... Really enjoying this, thanks for sharing this build with us.
