CATAN CLASS #2: Stuck playing against the USA National Champion in the 4th position, I have to think creatively to get out of a tough position.

This was a super dank lesson. All the effort you put into preparing it certainly paid off. Once you explained the logic of where to place towards the end of the video it all made sense, but I would have never come up with that on my own. Your videos continually show me that the game has deeper levels. And you're right, learning those deeper levels is the coolest part

This class certainly illustrates the importance of having a plan B, it's not uncommon to have opponents to laugh off your trade requests and block you in unpredictable ways I'm sure DyLighted can adapt to the different scenarios, but it's tougher for the rest of us. I guess that's one big difference between the top players and the weekend warriors!

I'm pretty sure I got done by a wws player without either of us realising the power of it. It was 3p and I had an amazing ows spot and he had a position similar to the 7th player solution board. He traded freely and ended up looping roads in a triangle format around the bottom left corner so noone could get in and spent whatever rock he managed to get on dev cards early. He ended up winning because his production and ports were unstoppable even though I just assumed I'd win with ows. I didn't screenshot it but after seeing this, I think that's the answer. Was only a few weeks ago too, so great timing. Just before you made your lesson 1 strategy reveal, I started thinking "yeah this could have its own name". So cool you went that way. Meta gonna get real good now 😎

WWS the future haha. Sort of not really though. The issue about talking about this is that people recognize it and will block you more, therefore making the WWS setup less effective.

I think you should've gone 2/6/9 and 3/6/11 grain. So you start with a grain for your first settlement, prevent red from cutting you off if he gets a couple of good rolls, and it locks 6/11/12 just in case. 3/6/11 wood just gives you a bit more of wood which you don't really need, 11 might not roll for a while. Also your first move given the board and how far your 6s are, needs to be securing your winning condition, which having coordinated 6s is longest road. So first of all, use your free road to go 9/4, and then keep building roads to cut off green (who doesn't have brick and no one will trade him any anyway), and connect your settlements. After securing longest road (you just need to roll two 6s), aim for 9 grain, at 9/12. You won't prevent orange from getting the 3.1 port, but you will get the longest road for yourself. You won't be needing a port at the beggining since every 6 gives you a road and you will be using every grain and wool you get for making the 3rd and 4th settlements. When you get to the 9 grain, you will have coordinated 9s as well. After that you can head to the 3.1 port at 2 ore. This gives you a much higher chance of winning the game despite orange's monopolies.

Blue and green can repeatedly threaten one another in this game scenario. Green can tell you that he won't buy dev cards or will in fact feed them to orange if you do plow him since green will correctly recognize he is completely fucked. Then you can tell green that since you are otherwise fucked due to your poor position, you can also feed orange if he won't play ball. However, green is stronger in this situation because he is actually completely screwed if you do plow him so he has more incentive to do that and make it so you can't win. Not plowing green can still somewhat allow you to win. Green has one other option: If plowed, he can just tell orange that if he ever buys any development cards, he will instantly switch to feeding development cards and cities to blue, which will give him a likely largest army, longest road, and great city-building.

5 8 10 is best 1st spot. Lots of sheep/wood spots left. Higher wheat production more useful than extra wood production when brick is low and you won't get as much brick as wood. It also forces 2nd to go 5 6 9 which only leaves 4 5 11 good ore which isn't great

I like the 6/9/2 pointing downwards and 4/3/11 pointing downwards better: you'll get the brick port and you'll also get to a 6 wood

@DyLightedCatan
@DyLightedCatan 4 жыл бұрын
That’s a good point. As they road player here, you have to play very efficiently with your roads. You either connect in the middle or commit to a single side to not split the road network. If you do play inefficiently, then orange could probably take road without a mono. Thanks for the comment.

Not sure the final solution works. Red already has tons of sheep with no ore, the 2 points of wheat are likely just as good as the 5 points of sheep. And if he understands the situation like you do, he knows if he plows you and gets the 6/11/12, you have no choice but to plow green and he gets more production out of his expansion

Go for production as win conditions are even harder to pursue! Also, the more players there are the harder you should trade.

As much as I like the idea of using such opportunities to extort good deals, the deal your offering here is not enough. Yes, he very likely looses if he does not do it (with road building cards 9/12, 12/11 and even 5/2 are still possible and there is also the possibility of 4 VP + LA + 2City) but giving you his city (he only needs one more ore=six) with only a single road as compensation puts him to far behind, so far that his chances are better in refusing the deal. He needs at least another brick as part of the deal to stay in the game. I can see the tactic working 30% of the games, some Players will just not agree to such extortion on principle and other Players will see that they lose even worse if they agree. So they either some won´t agree or only agree if they get that extra brick and 3 for 3. I think it is still worth trying. You lose little if the opponent refuses, sure he might taget you with the robber, but you seem to have the best setup anyway, so being targeted should be the norm.

Just on 3rd lesson now: what if the other player doesn't take the trade even after the nice speech? Maybe it's a friendly match, they're not really seeing the risk, value their ore too much, avoid trades or just believe we wouldn't damage our friend/family relationship that much over the game, do you then commit to your word and cut them off because you didn't get the trade, or is it like an empty threat?
@DyLightedCatan
@DyLightedCatan 4 жыл бұрын
You can either go through with it or offer them a better deal. It's much more beneficial to BOTH players to get a deal, so fight hard for this trade. However, be firm in your word to make your threat legit if you plan on playing this player again.

Hi DylLighted, I don't know if you reply to comments on old videos, but I have a question: Did Green make a mistake placing on 9/10/11 just to get blocked off? Could Green have done better by placing on the 9/10 (3:1 port) instead?
@DyLightedCatan
@DyLightedCatan 4 жыл бұрын
Good question. I think the 9/10/11 could work out for green if he was more aware that he was going to get plowed and the danger of getting plowed. Green refused any attempt at trading to have a settlement spot which left me no choice but to plow them. If you take the 9/10/11, be ready to negotiate for your life. Simply taking the 9/10 is a much safer option though, as weird and different as it seems.

Great Question, you have INSANE leverage here. You set the terms and the fair deal. If they refuse, they lose. Most thinking players know they are not in a spot to negotiate much.

@@DyLightedCatan The blackmail situation is really interesting. Assume blue plays on emotion. So you extort for a city and offer to not cut them off. But they refuse; "No, I wont give you a city for a road. And yes, I will target you if you cut me off." So what do you do? You know blue will focus you for the rest of the game and they are OWS, so they will have knights to target you. The other players will probably target you too given your strong new board position. Perhaps the positional benefit is great enough to overcome being targeted but cutting blue off might actually be fatal for both of you. Blue refusing trade might be suicidal, but you cutting off blue if they refuse might be equally suicidal. Food for thought.

I love the 3/6/11 decision, I was thinking 6/11/12. I would've extorted green for 2 card (including wheat) + future wheat trade & grab not only the 6/11/12, but also the 9/12 finally getting my own wheat & having 3 production of ore from the 2 & 12
