On this low ore board, I'm stuck in the 4th position with a board with low ore. I use the 3 Catan strategy lessons to help me become more successful in this game.
1) Predict where other people will place!
2) Know your win conditions
3) Adapt to the situation
This was a custom match played with a group of competitive players. We were on a voice call while playing, so you could table talk and negotiate trades like a real game.
USA Catan Nationals is over! I ended up placing 21st out of 84 people. I made a few critical mistakes that could've put me in the semi-finals, but overall I enjoyed my first USA Catan nationals and was happy with my play.
Sorry for the lack of uploads! I was spending all my time preparing for USA Catan Nationals. Thank you for your patience. You can finally expect at least one video a week!

Wow great video. I've been looking into a lot of Catan videos recently. You definitely seem like the most skilled and knowledgeable player I've come across (I've only seen this one video so far but I'm very impressed lol). I'll definitely join the discord. I want to comment on where I might have placed my settlements as 4th player. This is definitely an unorthodox choice but I think it might have been interesting haha. I think blue made quite a blunder going on the 9/4/3 instead of the 8/4/3 and securing the wood port. To capitalize on this, an interesting strategy would be placing the first settlement on the wood port, with the road pointing toward blue's road, and the second settlement on the 8/4/3 in the bottom left corner. The 8/4/3 gives you a road which will almost definitely allow you to immediately block off blue's road choice. Hopefully this will allow you to double or triple up on the 8 wood hex, possibly overcoming the lack of ore, though you are susceptible to robbers. I'm somewhat new to the game though so I'm not sure this is a great strategy. I haven't played online yet. Anyways great video!

Great thoughts so far! I 100% agree with you that blue made a blunder on the 9/4/3 choice. It was clear he didn't look ahead. About tripling up on the 8 wood: although nice, this makes the 8 wood a really big robber target. A lot of the times I don't like making my spots a bigger target for the robber. Something you also have to think about is the 1:1 wood brick ratio. You can't do anything without brick. Your road ratio isn't super strong. Yes, you have the port, but it sacrifices so much production. I think one of the biggest differences between strong veteran players and weaker players is that they don't view the game holistically. If you go on the 8/3 you leave a bunch of other very strong spots for other people. Keep that in mind. If there was an alternative pick, I'd pick the 3/4/8 + 9/10/2 using the free road to cut to the brick port. Remember to think about win conditions too. Are you going to get road or army? How are you going to do that? Will I have enough production for road? Army? Enough space for longest road? What about my competitors? All these things you have to ask yourself when you place.
@ylenolsreppeptgs

close one. I liked the tip about blocking the resource you produce, so others are forced to trade with you. I have never thought about it in those terms.

I feel like at 20:20, upgrading the 4-5-11 would have been a better option. Yes, you needed more wood to win the game, but getting a good wheat roll could allow you to upgrade that 9-wood to a city quickly anyway (maybe even 2 city upgrades at once), after which you'd just have to build longest road to win the game rather than going for an extra settlement. Essentially it would be investing in your economy and resource production for a little longer, in order to blitz the last few victory points faster, and you'd also have a few more options about the way you got those last points. Still it's debatable and I can understand your logic behind your decision, my judgement just favours the other alternative. With your mass 11s I also would have considered stockpiling wheat earlier rather than buying your first development card, in order to upgrade that 4-5-11 as soon as ore hit and then have huge access to city upgrades. What do you think?
@DyLightedCatan
@DyLightedCatan 5 жыл бұрын
Rhys Griffiths Something I didn’t mention was since I knew Blue had an unplayed Dev Card, I knew it was a victory point or a monopoly. Since blue was right about to build on the wheat port, I felt like upgrading the 4-5-11 was playing right into the monopoly on wheat that I thought could be coming. Also, in general I had 7 points of wheat already and felt like I didn’t need more. I’d rather upgrade and get a better road ratio (1:1 wood brick). Good thoughts. Perhaps upgrading the 4-5-11 could’ve won me the game.

@chrisosborne4731
@chrisosborne4731 4 жыл бұрын
17:38 If the settlement was placed on a higher producing location, it would easily be the correct play, but for the 4th ore on 11 and weak extra point in sheep, it isn't so clear. You didn't need to rush the port if you were not going to use it immediately, and you went from a 19/36 chance of producing per roll to a 20/36 chance. There is a 10% chance of one 12 for 4 consecutive rolls, which would only recoup your trade. The only reason I could see to rush the settlement is if you were worried a 7 or knight would occur and another player would target you.

13:10 maybe green was hoping that orange would play a knight to take the robber off their joint tile? Orange plays next turn, both of them have unplayed dev cards. I'd assume it was just a mistake but it could be an interesting strategy in some scenarios :) especially if he thought that orange might put the robber back on him directly afterwards as soon as he moved it.

1:40 i would place 8/3 wood port and pointing road to 3/6 along the coast to get that spot later. then 3/4/8 for free road, placing the one road downwards. this way you get 3 strong wood fields for trading ore against wood.

As I was paused looking at the possible placements, i started laughing. If I was in a causal setting playing with my family, knowing full well there was no way it would actually work, I would have been super tempted as 4th player to place on 8/3/wood port then 6/9/2, take all the wood, just for the memes.

Unfortuntely, most players that I play with (on Catan VR or home games) would likely place on 11 ore in this situation thinking that it's at least some exposure to ore meaning that the 5,4,11 spot would be taken. Not that doing so is mutually exclusive to noobie players, but I think this strategy also assumes everyone else is on board with the port game. In this game you can do everything assuming that people will take the best options, and be wrong which ends up screwing you.
@Austin101123
@Austin101123 4 жыл бұрын
I was thinking of taking the 3/4/8 brick wood wheat and the 9/6/2. Youd get a guaranteed 3 port, which for your wood would actually be better than taking the 8/3 because of the greater wood production, and you can get the 11/4 for stone. Your stone production wouldn't be that high but you'll have high wood conversion. What are your thoughts on this? How much worse is it compared to what you did?

Interesting video as always Dyl, was nice meeting you this weekend. A few minor things about the video, your comment about drawing in card games isn't really a good comparison here, there are a lot of situations in a TCG where you'd want to search out or dump the cards you don't want to draw out first before using your draw cards. On a different note your editing has really been improving as of late, good work with that dude. More specific to this game though, there are points late game where you're holding cards because you think you'll get good trades where I think it's unreasonable to assume people will still be trading. Also I really hate watching people use knights to try to steal specific cards, in my experience that's a really bad way to use that card, essentially making it a -2 in card advantage. Past that though it was an interesting game to watch, gotta love those 3 or 4 point swings for game.
@DyLightedCatan
@DyLightedCatan 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment. It was really nice meeting you too! About the card game thing, I’m not very familiar with MTG so it was a bad example to use, but in Hearthstone you’d always want to draw first to see what other options you’d get. Bad analogy, but hopefully the point gets across. About the trading, I was sad I lost the ore late game not just because of trading, but because I knew blue needed the ore to city. I cut that part out for audio, but perhaps should’ve left it in. I also thought people would still trade since they had to upgrade and I’d be generous since ore was worthless for me at that point. In general I don’t like stealing for specific resources either, but when you get a 100% card (1 card left) you need I think it’s worth it.

I think it would have made sense for blue to go for the 5 4 desert, in order to try and wreck your game. he got a lot of good rolls to get himself most of the way there. I think with table-talk he could have gotten the right trades pretty easily. It also would've gotten him a wheat port with pretty good production.

what is the 5:4:3 ore wheat sheep strategy? Is that ideal values when placing a settlement?
@DyLightedCatan
@DyLightedCatan 5 жыл бұрын
It’s essentially the values of building a city and development cards added together. The “ore wheat sheep” strategy revolves around having a ratio of 5:4:3 (ore/wheat/sheep) to go heavy development cards and cities sacrificing your road building production. This is my preferred method of play as it’s the stronger strategy in the game.

You had no choice but to pick a spot on the 10 wool. the other spot had two possibilities and you picked the best (very slightly riskier) one. When you said "I don't know why Green didn't play his knight" the first time around, it was because he thought he could get Orange to use his knight first to clear that spot and get his resource opened while retaining his own Knight. I would only do that if the blocked resource wasn't that useful to me (like if I already had plenty of that resource or if I had zero cards). Or If I had 7 cards. But Green had a wood port and 4 cards. It seems like a 6-wood would have to be useful there. But It is a low ore board, so he has to be more frugal with Knights than usual. Considering he was on a wood port, saving the Knight one round might not have been worth it. Or he should have not played it the next round either, saving it to free up his wheat (or brick) in the future or to steal an ore from you after the roll of an 11.
@trey3828
@trey3828 4 жыл бұрын
I know this is an old video but one strategy for placing settlements would to place one of them on the 9-6-2 (Wood, wood, ore) and the second on 8-3 (Wood, sheep) so that you will get tons of wood AND have the wood port.
@DyLightedCatan
@DyLightedCatan 4 жыл бұрын
In general having 1 type of resource and going on the port is not a good strategy as you have to port everything so it reduces your production in half.

You mentioned buying dev cards before building because you want options. Does the same theory apply to when the robber is blocking you and you have a knight? Do you move the robber immediately so you can free up your hex or do you wait for a roll to see if you get a probable 7 and move him for free? That way you have your knight remaining in your hand for defensive plays. Just curious because I’m new to the game! I’m loving the O/W/S gameplay! Thanks for the tips 👍
@DyLightedCatan
@DyLightedCatan 3 жыл бұрын
Great question. Usually when the robber is on your hex, you want to play your knight before you roll. However, if you are at 7 cards, do NOT play the knight before you roll. This is because playing the knight will bring you to 8 cards and you might roll a 7 losing half your cards. Hope this helps!

I would place on the 3-4-8 pointing left & the 8-3 pointing right Looking back, there's a decent chance of someone taking the 6-11-3, automatically disqualifies me taking longest road & blue would end up blocking the 8-3 anyway. Getting the 3-6 or 3-9-6 is still likely, but overall a worse setup than what you chose. This was due to my lack of experience predicting other placements & me generally looking to get 1 VP & Build to 9 as my win condition My family is very aggressive at targeting the lead player, so a hidden VP is very good, also my family will trade roads to others aggressively & will build 4 dead roads just to cut off the longest road (we allow 'gifting' others cards), not a very competitive board. I usually take a lead early, but still losing as I'm often seen as a high threat & cutthroat player (compared to several who place the robber in the dessert multiple times gladly for free or 1 resource & discourage taking both a bribe & block/steal which I still do) With more practice tracking resources, I could easily adopt a development card strategy as most of my family doesn't even bother buying them. I have tried it with mixed success

2:56 at this point I’m wondering why you didn’t go for 5:4:11 and 3:4:8. You would have a bunch of wheat in a high wheat game and get to the 8 lumber within a few turns. While you’d have to trade for sheep early on, it isn’t too hard to get sheep in the early game. It might be slow at first but you’d have an instant road to make it past blue to the wheat port. It’s not guaranteed you’d beat him there, but the reward would be amazing if you made it.
@DyLightedCatan
@DyLightedCatan 3 жыл бұрын

Regarding starting placement in 4th position, I would have taken the 8/3 wood port and the 9/6/2. That makes the game-plan dead-simple: corner as much of the wood production as possible by expanding around the 8 and 6 wood, and then use the wood port for a devastating advantage.

I’ve already answered this question in another comment if you want to read that. It’s a bad idea to start with only 2/5 resources. It’s also a bad idea to place on a coastal spot as 4th position since it leaves a ton of space open for other players. Lastly, port strategies are flexible, but inherently inefficient as you have to port 2:1 for every resource while everyone else can simply use their resources efficiently without converting it. I hope this helps.

As a result, I do everything in my power, trading super aggressively, to commit resources to the board as fast as possible. I do 2-1 and 3-1 trades with other players all the time, because the way I see it they could be unable to use all the resources I give them, but I can use what I'm getting right now to make permanent gains.

Why get the 3:1 port if you aren’t going to use it? At 26:00 you could have built a road, giving you a better opportunity to take longest road. You mentioned that it doesn’t make sense, but I don’t understand why

Any reason you shouldn't just go to the 8-3 wood port (road pointed to the left) and the 9-6-2 right off the bat? Have your 9-6-2 road pointed upward with the intention to get the 3-6. This would be massive amounts of wood and you'd have the wood point, and you'd be able to get to the 8-4-desert on your first move if your opponent doesn't get there first. Is this a bad strategy? To completely play your game through wood?
@DyLightedCatan
@DyLightedCatan 4 жыл бұрын
Jacob Bullinger Great question. Port strategies are inherently inefficient as you have to port all your resources 2:1. This means getting a single wood is only half of a resource, compared to other players just producing diverse resources and using them. In general it’s a not a good idea to play with 2/5 resource types. In this case you are starting with only wood and little sheep.
@jacobbullinger6858
@jacobbullinger6858 4 жыл бұрын
OK cool thanks. In this case I would actually have the 2-ore and the 3-sheep, not just sheep, but I have a feeling that doesn't change your answer much haha. So ports need to be like #3 priority, never #1? That seems fair. I always really enjoy playing the game, but deciding on first settlements in Catan is truly one of my favorite decision making activities in the entirety of board games. Always interesting. Thanks for the reply.
@DyLightedCatan
@DyLightedCatan 4 жыл бұрын
@@jacobbullinger6858 You aren't wrong that you get the 2 ore and 3 sheep, but they are very very low in production. Ports I would say is not the top priority, but rather a bonus reason of why I would place somewhere.

Can you explain me the points thingy? Like I didn't understand how you gave your wood 4 points, sheep is 3 points and your brick 7 points
@DyLightedCatan
@DyLightedCatan 3 жыл бұрын
When I say points, it’s just the number of dots on the tile. So the 8 wood is 5 “points” of production. If we totally up the 8wood/4wheat/3sheep (top one) we have 5 points of wood, 3 points of wheat, and 2 points of sheep. It adds up to 10 points of production. I hope this helps! Let me know.
@danielshinar8085
@danielshinar8085 3 жыл бұрын
@@DyLightedCatan so the points are basically how many production placements you occupy? I dont think I've understood why you gave the wood 5 point or the wheat 3 points. Sorry
@DyLightedCatan
@DyLightedCatan 3 жыл бұрын
@@danielshinar8085 Exactly! The number of dots you occupy. The more dots, the more likely it is to roll.
@danielshinar8085
@danielshinar8085 3 жыл бұрын
@@DyLightedCatan ok I finally really understood the point system, it's based on how likely the number is to roll on the dices let's say we put a settlement on a 5 resource(dousnt metter which) so there is 4 possible outcomes of the dices to get to 5 so it gets 4 point - (1, 4) ,(2, 3), (3, 2) and (4, 1). So if we look at 8wood/4wheat/3sheep it goes like this 8wood = 5 points - (2,6), (3,5), (4,4), (5,3), (6,2) 4wheat = 3 points - (1,3), (2,2), (3,1) 3sheep = 2 points - (1,2), (2,1) Than we add all the points so 5 + 3 + 2 = 10 points of production hope I made it clear. (Sorry to keep annoying you :) by the way I love your videos)

ok but imagine the 962, and the 83 port...... all 3 high wood sources with the wood port... just farm wood the entire game having a 6, and 8, and a 9 as wood sources with the port? every other roll you would be getting wood to change into other materials. Thats what I would have done.

Obviously You assumed you had longer to build longest road than you did. Options: connect your roads before building to your fourth settlement. I can't suggest this because getting on the 4 wood really could improve your chances to build roads by giving you 7 wood dots and 7 brick dots (not counting cities). Which brings me to option 2. Build to the 4/11 Wood/Ore spot first, THEN go for the 3for1 port . This choice was made before the importance of longest road was clear and it would have been extremely unorthodox, so I am not going to say you should have done it. But I think it would have given you the best chance to win. But in the end, you had the better set up throughout the game. Blue Built around the desert for god's sake. You should have just rolled better. Ending the game on 8,9, 8 and 4 was perfect for blue (4 wood, 8 Wheat with a wheat port). You couldn't cheat better than that. (also the mistake you mention with the development card was absolutely the crucial play. Buying a road there wins the game)

After rewatching this, I’d have to disagree. What does this do for green at 3 cards? Not much. This trades gives me a settlement which isn’t strong in production, but provides the flexibility since I get on the 3:1 port. If I was to repeat this situation, I’d still give the trade.
