13.4 inches of rain in less than 5 days has inundated our fields, causing severe flooding. Our farm's bin site is damaged, and many roads are now inaccessible. In today's video, I show the widespread destruction caused by this once-in-a-lifetime flooding event that swept across my farm in Southwest Minnesota. This catastrophic flood also impacted Eastern South Dakota, Northern Iowa, and all of Southern Minnesota.

QUESTION - Have a question about farming or life on the farm? Drop it in the comments!
Matthias, aka HiTech Farmer, is a 5th generation family farmer from Southwest Minnesota who promotes agriculture by capturing it through the lens of a camera, one video at a time. Passionate about emerging farm technologies and the benefits of 21st-century precision agriculture tools, such as farm equipment, GPS, and autonomous tractors, Matthias is determined to bring new methods into his operation. These methods can improve his farm's efficiency and sustainability into the future. Learning from his parents' (Mike and Dawn) work ethic, Matthias sees every day as an opportunity to educate and entertain about the daily triumphs and challenges his farm faces, whether technology-related or not. His mission is to share his enthusiasm and knowledge of agriculture as he embarks on what it means to be a farmer in the modern era.

No matter how much you plan, how hard you try or how many hours you work. You can not control the weather and although that is not unique to farming it sure can mess with what it is you are trying to accomplish. Sorry for your luck but I bet you will remember 2024 for the rest of your life.

I wouldn't say no rain is a bad thing. I farmed up until 2022 and it rained like this in iowa in 1993.we had lakes like you do there is no yield at all. But with drought you usually had a little yield every where. I've always had better yield with a drought than with flooding

Best wishes to your farm from Southern Alberta, Canada. Just harvest what matures and stay out of those fields, is all I can suggest. (After four years of drought- semi-arid lack of moisture conditions here, send us your next rain showers). It will cost you money to rebuild your roads, yield losses, etc; at least flooding is temporary, and you don't have dirty-thirty drought conditions. All the best to you and your farm.

How about some dike up hill from the bin site to route flowing water around it? My family farmed 500 acres 4.5 miles north of Grand Meadow Mn. My dad was on the Minnesota Dairy Promotion Board through the 1970’s. Farm was sold in 1981. We had some flooding in the south end of our farm in late summer 1978 when my parents and I were on a farm tour through Europe. My dad called home to check on things and whoever talked to my dad downplayed the situation. We finished the trip. It was interesting to tour Europe when I was 11 years old.

Thanks for the comment! The water has to go to the creek down past the bin site so what were thinking is digging in a larger culvert to be prepared for MASSIVE rain events like this. Hopefully, we'll never need it and it just looks silly to people that pass on the road.

Very interesting to learn about your connection to the farm! I bet as an 11 year old seeing something you've been raised up around on the other side of the world was quite the experience. I'd bet you are still even apart of the agriculture industry because of the influence farming had on your life when you were younger.

No connection to the farming industry but I have pole barn storage on an old farm. I mow the lawn in the summer and fall and I have lots of liberties to fix and dismantle my stuff as long as I don’t leave a mess or burn the place down. The fields are rented by local farmers.

Sun is crazy, el nino cycle in the ocean, and planes putting ionized material into the atmospheric accelerating condensation. OK but doesn't the flood water fertilize the ground for the next growing season with silt manure and other nutrients?

I covered this in my most recent video showing the aftermath, but the rains replenish the moisture in the soil. Not so much of a benefit to the fertilizer, it actually washes some of them away and erodes our top soils faster.
