“He’s proven to be a pretty catastrophically bad defence minister in wartime.”
Former defence minister Sergei Shoigu is a personal friend of Putin and so was saved from being dismissed from his regime entirely despite being unpopular with his troops, says Mark Galeotti.

Apparently, he has believed in raising taxes to build the Russian Military Complex, not help russians, for a very long time. His economic specialty is in behavior feedback loops, possibly in ways to start and control them. I am not sure what this talent will mean. Maybe: Russian losses will lead to more patriotism, which will lead to more patriotism, which will lead for more Russian losses, which will lead to more Russian Patriotism.

I really don't read anything more into this removal of Shoigu than what meets the eye and obvious explanation that Putin has come to realize this war is going to go on for years. Moving Shoigu to the head of security council is more than just a polite way to get him out of the way, as that is what Shoigu is actually good at... he is a master politician and was never a military type. The new Defense minister now has the role of 'serving' the military by making sure they get everything they need. The most important military role inside the armed forces is now the Chief of staff - currently held by Gerasimov... It will be interesting to see if he keeps that job. Bottom line, this is NOT good news for Ukraine, just the opposite unfortunately in my view.

Well put it this way Putin is way more popular than Biden is. Also this headline is a lie in the first place because Shoigu was never fired. Shoigu has been promoted and the guy replacing him is an economist that's going to ramp things up whilst still keeping an eye on spending. But oh no according to Western media the walls are going to start closing in now, how many times have we heard that !!

On actual news because Shougu's cushy appointment to another easier and equally as prominent position is a big nothing burger. Ukraine has received all the aid they requested and then some, now they are crying they don't have the manpower to fight and if anyone wasn't a complete dull said this was the case when the US Congress didn't agree to send more aid last year. The problem Ukraine has isn't bullets, supplies, or money issues. They don't have a population willing to fight.

Ahem. If you were to list every country who has aided Ukraine and then order them by the amount of aid they gave calculated as a fraction of their own GDP, the US is not even in the top 20. So while the US has obviously given the most, they gave little compared to what they could actually AFFORD to give. Most of the top 20 in that list are EU countries.

@@VDD-2766 That's a fair comment but insinuating that the EU is slacking in their aid is not. And I have to say, this is in the whole world's back yard, not the EU's.
