CATCH AND COOK Spiny Sea Urchin!!! (UNI)

Күн бұрын

Daniel and I drove to Mendocino to catch some Abalone and Sea Urchins aka Uni. May not exactly be a catch and cook, but we can call it a catch and eat. This may be the last year to dive for Abalone until 2030 so the rumor goes. Their numbers have been decreasing a lot due to an increase in the number of Sea Urchins. Hoping the Ab numbers start to recover in the coming years.

i love how you tackled the root of the problem on why abalone is decreasing so much and questioning the methods of it closing down, putting a fisherman's perspective into view.
@acespades2387
@acespades2387 6 жыл бұрын
Okay so, my dad was a huge abalone fisher when I was younger and tons of times he's bring sea urchins with him. (And sometimes fish) So I got used to harvesting sea urchins and learning about them when I was real little. Being a biology nerd at the time prolly helped. What you're eating is the eggs (not the testicles, you wierdos) of the sea urchins. They have a bumpy texture by feel and taste is pretty negligable? Kinda sweet maybe. But you eat it for the texture which is IMO worth the taste. It's creamy and has an odd solidity to it that makes it really interesting. SO I'm gonna go ahead and say that the dude here is being pretty stupid. DO NOT attempt to open it with an ungloved hand and ESPECIALLY do not put pressure on the other side to press it into your hand. Take the sea urchin, flip it over, place the shiny side on a solid surface, and with the tool you used to pick it up (basically a sturdy metal bar that's fairly thin) just give it a firm whack to the middle using the thinnest portion of the tool. Make sure to wash the uni as there's prolly guts ALL OVER the thing that's gonna make it real bitter. (you'd otherwise be eating urchin crap) Eat the bright orange ones. if it's not bright orange, don't even bother. you got a bad uni. I suggest getting something with nice flavoring to dip it in (soysauce with maybe a little chili powder in it (USE THE LESS SALTY VERSION 'cause it's gonna be salty anyhow) and eat away) rinse it with seawater btw. gonna be more flavorful that way. also the bitter taste the second dude experienced? guts. gotta wash it.

If you want urchins that are full of eggs, you should search for the ones that have bits of seaweed or little shells on their "thorns". The best way to eat these eggs, after cleaning the urchin is by drizzling them with olive oil and a little lemon and then scraping them off with some bread. Always eat them by the sea right after you catch them to fully enjoy this seafood. Always use saltwater to clean them

I love that stuff. We usually just cut the sea urchin in half, cut from the top and it should split down the middle. Grab a spoon and use it to scrape the roe out, much easier and cleaner that way. We dont rinse it in fresh water (rinse in seawater) nor do we have it with soy sauce however, I have eaten it cooked over an open fire. Split the shell in two halves and clean it all out then put the roe back in the empty shell and place that on the coals. That taste really nice, sweetens it a bit.

Thank you so much for educating us. The reasons for closing the season on abalone is exactly what you said, but star fish takes a while to multiply. That is why they closed if off. I honestly think that uni is so popular that they should do more commercial on it because it produces so fast. Anyways thank you so much for the videos! Appreciate it. P.S. here in hawaii we place the Wana (uni) in a wire bag and shake it so that the spikes fall off, and it's easier and safer to open up. Plus the white part is the sperm so you know it is a Male..

Uni is delicious! At least you'll still have that (and anything else you can nab with your speargun) if the shut down the Ab fishery. Speaking of which, you're right in that closing down the take of Abalone won't stop the urchin population from blowing up and depriving the abalone of their food source, but closing it _will_ make sure that there's not _additional_ pressure put on the ab population by divers while CDFW and researchers figure out solutions for shoring up abalone numbers that will eventually allow for recreational take again. Shutting down the commercial fishery would definitely ease pressure, and one that I'd argue for, but the reality is that creating regulations that impacts people's income is farrrrr less palatable to policymakers than regulations on recreational anglers & divers that only affects our hobby. It's a tough situation no matter how you slice it.
@CatchCatchFish
@CatchCatchFish 6 жыл бұрын
Curious how many people actually rely on commercial ab diving for income. Wonder if it's like commercial trapping in Cali. Very little. Regulate commercial take before recreational.
@user-kk6lc1th2r
@user-kk6lc1th2r 6 жыл бұрын
You're spot on that regulating commercial take is the way to go in most cases. It's just that recreational groups often don't have the organization, resources, lobbyists, etc.. that business conglomerates do. But the main issue with declining ab population is the booming urchin numbers that are laying waste to the abalone's food source. I'd love to see a more aggressive awareness campaign from CADFW promoting urchin harvesting and lift the daily limit restriction.

Yes! and perhaps more awareness on which ones are good to eat, heh. I see lots of small, purple ones here in SoCal. Are those any good to eat?
@user-kk6lc1th2r
@user-kk6lc1th2r 6 жыл бұрын
Totally fine to eat. if you’re in SoCal I’d look to harvest the red ones if possible just because larger=more uni; but if you harvest 6-10 purple ones- let alone a limit of 35- that’s still plenty of uni to eat I think. Actually here’s an older vid showing someone harvesting the smaller purple ones up in WA. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ac57ftx7qbCbloU.html Go get’em!
