The Wooded Beardsman

After multiples attempts to trap a NUISANCE beaver that is causing flooding and damaging nearby forests and flooding new tree growth, we finally get what we're looking for!
Remember that trapping wildlife is important when it causes the destruction of other natural habitat including flooding out trees. Beavers can be very destructive and they need to be managed or people will lose their homes and roadways.
Is it too late to push up back from the brink of starvation and get our energy and weight back up? Watch to find out!
This entire series is about catch n cook!
Welcome to Season 2 of The Wilderness Living Challenge. As last year, the rules are simple, come out as heavy or heavier than going in to crown ourselves victors.
This year we decided to be more mobile and we came in ready with a plan. Find out if we can put turn a year's worth of experiments and learning into success and thrive in our epic journey of survival!
I'm joined by Jeremy, One Wildcrafter: / @onewildcrafter
and Adam Craig Outdoors: / @adamcraigoutdoors

In Canada, we have quota on beaver in order to manage their population so that regular people don't have their homes and roads flooded. Licensed trappers use humane traps to remove a certain percentage of beaver every year. Without this valuable service, our homes would be ruined and roads impassible. i figured your camera would start working again once it dried off, however this may be a good time to consider a different camera, one that can better handle the environment you're putting them in.. something waterproof, shock resistant, etc because its going to go in the water again at some point, or get knocked over

Sorry for the camera fall. I save those packets of Silica, which come in shoes, furniture, backpacks, pill containers and all sorts of things you can purchase... Pharmacies are also willing to collect and save them for you from pill containers and they are very VERY quality moisture absorbing materials (better than rice! Jasmine rice is the most absorbent though). So I collect and save these in a zip-lock baggie as well as keeping rice on hand in case of the event that I drop an electronic device in water. ALWAYS TURN OFF THE DEVICE THE MOMENT IT IS SUBMERGED AND DO NOT TRY TURNING IT ON UNTIL FULLY DRIED....You will fry the electronics if you keep trying to turn it on....just be patient and wait 2+ days with it in rice/silica. SAVE YOUR SILICA packets (DO NOT EAT lol)

it really makes me question the conditioning of modern living. lots of people don't consider anything beyond only the flesh of an animal to be acceptable for eating but after watching this it makes me think of how our ancestors would have lived, eating anything that they could to survive and on top of that the level of health they would have attained. amazing.
@ac174
@ac174 6 жыл бұрын
it also makes me think of your guys mentality. you guys are so happy and compared to modern societies conditioning (that myself and your audience) you guys just accept that life goes on. no crying about the death of an animal, its dead and we eat it. crazy. we''re all just apart of nature, things that were once living can be broken down into nothing.

In my neck of the Bayou we say "Tout va au pot" (Everything goes to the pot), and we do put it all in. Yes you skin the tail first on the beaver. There is a real treat and another way to cook in the wild, but takes to long to present it here, but you fill the animal with hot rocks, then stitch it up, and it will also remain moist.

I'm loving this series. You guys are gnarly. Not familiar with either one of your channels, this is my intro to your videos. I like that your took back up supplies but resist using them. I've spent most of my sixty-plus years in the back country and know what you're going through as far as being on the edge, but hangin' on. Sometimes it's that way. most of the time it's not, because you get to know what you have to do ahead of time. I had to cringe watching you drag those beaver around all day without gutting them, though, but that's just me. I guess if you cook groundhog stomach it might not matter, but intestines and their contents are not a good thing to leave in your food. Anyway, like I said, I love what you're doing and you've both gained a subscriber.

Most tribes will generally teach one "official" way of doing everything but if you ask the people of that tribe they may have several different methods. I'm like that. There is no wrong way to do something if it gets you the result you're looking for. I'd say as long as you got a meal out of it, y'all did fine. Now if you guys had skinned cooked, and ate the beaver in an attempt to make friends with it, well... your methods could use some refining lmao

+Oh Lawd The experts would survive longer tho. And yeah only very few experts could survive a whole life. It is fun and games to make a trip like that for a few days, but when it comes to a few years most so called "experts" couldn't handle most of the problems, because they are specialized too much on one thing. But some experts would survive and some do survive right now, their whole life. I guess, the biggest enemy in a real survival situation is your own mind/psyche.

I know I haven't commented on this series yet because I've been enjoying it and I've had no questions but about 19:30 into this video you talk about animal's being socially acceptable to eat and I totally agree. It made me think about here in the states there are Arby's restaurants that are serving venison burgers and elk burgers, maybe we're moving forward to where it is totally more acceptable to eat deer. (I've never had elk)
@TheWoodedBeardsman
@TheWoodedBeardsman 6 жыл бұрын
That's cool to hear! I think deer is more socially acceptable than say, bear. For some reason, people think bear hunters just waste the animal. Maybe it's just so out of the ordinary, I'm not sure...sort of like coyote, which people see as dog, and dogs are pets...not sure how that works for bear, but bear makes fine food. Mostly I think it's just a general detachment from nature and how the world works anymore. Doubt it ever comes right back...I just find nature fascinating and finding my spot in it, grounding.
@TheWoodedBeardsman
@TheWoodedBeardsman 6 жыл бұрын
It's hard to known and I think most people don't really think about it themselves, they just think what they do is normal and if you do something different than them, then it's "not okay." So mostly just boils down to cultural differences. I know my image, while open to most things, has changed a lot since trying to look at this through a wilderness living lens...rather than as just a modern eater.

About eating bear , when you skin them they look disturbingly like humans. I put bear meat in jars and pressure can it ... the hole bear , save use a meat grinder for the tougher cuts first. this removes the STRONG flavoured fat and makes it so tasty you can eat it cold strait from the jar ... it's like tinned ham . for thoughts who don't know what bear fat tastes like imagine cold lamb fat it's about like that... It will curl your whiskers . I have a preconception about eating wild critters cute things taste better !

Wait... since when is vision not acceptable to eat in the US? Maybe people on the west or east coast think its weird? But in MN and the midwest its super acceptable. Better than killing deer for sport and not eating them.

Thank you! Really appreciated the stance on veganism, too many vegans think they aren't having an affect on the planet because they don't eat meat, but it just isn't that simple. Support what you believe in! I eat very little meat and my dairy products are all pasture raised at the very least. I'd love the opportunity to hunt some day and go through the nitty gritty process of skinning and consuming. I think anyone who is going to eat meat should go through it at least once, people have come too detached from their food. Love the vid! Keep it up

If it was in the fall or winter i would have asked to keep the pelt. If the fall/winter the fair gets nice and thick (it's called Prime) and that is when it is worth money for a trapper. Trapping nuisance is needed but the best time (if possible) is during the fall and winter to utilize the fur.

Around 20 min mark. Wildlife conservation is also about population control. Too many deer in an area rubbing on trees, eventually kills the trees ergo population control. If people are so sensitive about natural process, maybe they have some growing up to do.
