Despite being billed as a true story, there has lately been a LOT of suggestion that Abagnale exaggerated most of his stories and was more of a petty crook than he made out. BUT, that still makes him a damn good con man, because if nothing else he managed to convince once of the best directors in movie history to tell his story.

I agree. In every movie! Jen, if you're reading this: are you a musician? Or just a music lover! I think this is one of John Williams' best scores. "Close Encounters" is still my favorite score of his......but the music is a plot point in that movie! So it's not really fair to compare it, but other than that, I think this is my favorite score from him that isn't Jaws or Star Wars. (I remember being 9, watching Superman and thinking......he's ripping off himself!😄 He's ripping off himself ripping off Mahler!🤣)

Thank you. The beginning credits animation is reminiscent of a lot of fifties and sixties heist movie credits animations. The music is also very in genre. As for Tom Hanks movies, "Philadelphia" (1993) it was pretty much his first real serious straight role. Without Philadelphia Tom Hanks might still be the comic actor he started out as. The girl you asked about is Jennifer Garner, she starred in an espionage TV Series "Alias".

I read the book after seeing the movie, and loved them both. One interesting anecdote in the book was when he was living in the posh house as a doctor, he had a doctor neighbor who would always chat him up about medical topics that Frank couldn't answer. So Frank started reading medical journal articles on obscure topics that he knew his neighbor wouldn't know about. It worked, and the neighbor started avoiding him altogether.

The opening scene was combined with some footage of an actual game show, To Tell the Truth, from an episode that aired in 1977. The basic premise of the show was that there were three people all claiming to be the same person. A statement written by that person was read by the host, and a panel of four celebrities would question the contestants to try and figure out who the real one is. After the panel votes, the host says "Will the real (person's name) please stand up?". As for the actual Frank Abagnale, it's been called into question in more recent years as to whether he actually did some of the things he claimed to have done in his book.

This movie has aged as well as anything Spielberg ever made; it so nails Frank's yearning for a father figure that will steer him right instead of wrong. Totally echo recommendations for "That Thing You Do!" Such an underrated movie. It's essentially a coming of age film. Frank is a kid who idolizes his father and clings to the childish fantasy of his family reuniting. He lives in glamor and denial while constantly running away from reality. He falls for Brenda because of her childish innocence, but that dream is shattered. Hanratty, meanwhile, is an alternate father figure, unglamorous and uncharming but steadfast, honest, and holding Frank accountable. The ending is bittersweet; Frank is disillusioned but finally grows up. Christopher Walken is incredible in this and his character never fails to make me cry.

Another Hanks and Spielberg collaboration is The Post (2017) with Meryl Street. And pretty much every Spielberg film has utilized John Williams music. I would say some great Williams music is in Spielberg’s A.I. (2001), Oliver Stone’s JFK (1991), and two Tom Cruise films: War of the Worlds (2005) and Born on the Fourth of July (1989)

Martin Sheen (as the father in law to be) has many movies. E.g. with his son Charlie in Wall Street (Michael Douglas as the iconic Gordon Gekko) and as the lead in Apocalypse Now. Both worthy of review. Plus, along side Christopher Walken in The Dead Zone.

Hey Jen, Just like Carl said at the end, "living the lie is so much better than living the truth." -------- So many of us face this truth on a daily basis, but we're not good at stealing. -------- So we watch TV, or IG about rich people, or go to fancy hotels or restaurants to get a taste of the billionaire life. -------- In the end all the really matter is love and family.

A Leo movie that I think is often forgotten is 'What's Eating Gilbert Grape'. I personally think Leo did a fantastic job here, especially when he was so young at the time! May even have been his first movie?

Hey Jen, I hum this muci every once in a while as well. It's so infectious. The music and the opening grahpic is a nod to the works of Saul Bass who was the first to make graphic open movie titlesa and fim posters. I think he made them for many film noir flicks including many by Alfred Hitchcock, including Vertigo, North by North West, Anatomy of a Murder.

Hi Jen! Commenting on your question what to watch in Tomn Hanks movies. You must react to Road to Perdition. The story reolves around gangsters in the 1920s and 1940s. This movie is based off of a graphic novel and directed by Sam Mendes. In my opinion, it is Tom Hanks' most underated movie. Road to Perdition is also the last project of M. Paul Newman. Don't forget about Hanks' early work ; The Money Pit, The Burbs, Big

For movies to watch based solely on John Williams score, I recommend Memoirs of a Geisha and Far and Away. The movies are just OK, but Williams music, especially for Far and Away, is outstanding.

If you like the credits, they are inspired by Saul Bass. The thing to remember about the plot of this 'true' film is that it's based on a story by a con-man. Make of that what you will.

Jen, if you want to know more, there are lectures by Frank Abignale on KZfaq. He says it is easier to run a con now than it was in the 1960s. He also says it wasn't really fun to do what he did because he was still a child, was lonely, and cried when he was by himself.
