It's important to point out this movie feels like a different movie every time you watch it - every time you re-watch this movie (once every 3 or 4 years), it feels like he's in the "time-loop" again trying to do slightly different things (because you notice different things). "Dark City" from 1998 is a great film. It came out just before The Matrix and has similarities, but it also feels like a 1940s film noir combined with a future dystopia.

As someone who was in my twenties in the '80s I'm now living in my dystopian future and it's nowhere near as much fun as I expected.

Terry Gilliam is a kind of twisted Genius. Films like this one, "The Fisher King," "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas," or "Brazil" really show what an imaginative and mad genius Gilliam is.

When Dr. Reilly finds out that the boy that everyone thought had fallen down the mine shaft was actually hiding in a nearby barn - exactly as Cole had told her - that was the turning point for her in believing that Cole was, in fact, from the future. Then of course finding out the bullet was from WWI and that his picture was in her book about that strange sighting, that cemented it. So many different ways this could have gone. Great movie!

Madeleine Stowe is one of those actresses that I really have no idea if they are any good at acting or not - I spend the whole time when she's on screen just looking at her, mesmerized.

Glad you liked it, one of my favorites. James was never meant to stop the virus, that was never the plan. He played his role, that's why the scientist lady at the end introduced herself as the insurance.

12 Monkeys remains one of my favorite movies for all the reasons you mention in your wrap up. The plot has SO many layers and it really does hold up to multiple viewings. I also love that they even reference that fact when Cole is commenting at the Hitchcock fest that the movie never changes, but it's a different experience each time you watch it because YOU'RE different. There is so much to dig into in this really rich, complicated story. If you like Terry Gilliam's visual style & sensibility, you may also want to check out Brazil. It's kind of Walter Mitty meets 1984, but it is .....unique. And since you seemed to enjoy 12 Monkeys, this may also suit your tastes. Thanks for the 'watch along'. Brad Pitt is next-level in this movie. If you like Terry Gilliam's style as a filmmaker here, the other big recommendation is Brazil.

Another great dystopian sci-fi from Terry Gilliam is Brazil, one of my all time favourite movies. The Fisher King is awesome too.

All of Terry Gilliam’s films are visually stunning. His “masterpiece” and simultaneously one of his most difficult films is Brazil.

One of my favourite movies. Top 10 for sure. More importantly though, I don't think I've ever seen anyone react to this and join so many of the dots on first viewing. Treat yourself to a glass of that movie-champagne. You deserve it!

Terry Gilliam is brilliant, and remarkably skilled with the future dystopias. I must strongly suggest seeing his "Brazil", as it is noted among cornerstones of the genre.1

Hey Jen, I knew you would love , "12 Monkeys". i love Terry Gilliam's directing, it's so next level, his sets and environments are second to none. ---------- He has such an unsettling and creative way of telling stories. And he's excellent at directing actors too: At the time Bruce Willis was always cast the "strong, brave hero that saves the day", and Brad Pitt often cast as the seductive, confident type, with no real flaws. -------- Well, Gilliam went the opposite way and got some of these guys best performances ever. ------ You should watch Brazil too (be warned it may get low views).

Donnie Darko is a great movie with some themes in 12 Monkeys. Great 80s new wave soundtrack, too.

Yes Jen. Definitely see The Marx Brothers. They are amazing. My favorite is Horsefeathers. Animal Crackers, Duck Soup, Night at the Opera, and Day at the Races are all great starting points. You will enjoy them. You could even do their movies in order like your Bond series. In that case start with The Cocoanuts.

Great reaction Jen! This is a superb film that rewards you with multiple viewings. One of the central themes is that you can't change the past but you CAN change the present, which is what James and Kathryn accomplished. The loop we watch in the film is the one that breaks the loop. We know it's slightly but crucially different from previous loops because James calls the future and tells them The Army of the 12 Monkeys is not responsible. That had never happened before or they would have had that evidence like the other phone call or the spray painted message. Now they know how to get a sample of the original virus. The scientist on the plane will return to the present and a vaccine will be developed. There will be no need for further time travel. The past will settle and James (and hopefully Kathryn) will be remembered as a hero. What a film!

2:39 - There's a funny "poem" about bears, because the conflicting stories you've heard probably are because different bears are different sizes and temperaments and how you react is different. If it's brown, lay down. If it's black, fight back. If it's white, good night. The general idea being that black bears are the smallest and most afraid of humans, so if you make yourself look big and scary and yell at it, chances are that it will run away. Brown bears are bigger, so you want it to become bored with you after you curl into a ball and it plays with you for awhile. If you're stuck with an angry polar bear, you are DEAD.

One of my favorites. I love how he created his own red herrings and couldn’t change the past, our future. This movie is pretty unique with the time travel actually making sense.

It was very satisfying hearing your astute responses. The sign of a GREAT paced and well written mystery film is when it provokes a question in you and then answers it at the perfect moment. This happened with you several times. I could watch any Gilliam film over and over. This is one of the best Sci-Fi Time Travel movies EVER! Every scene is so visually interesting, intriguing & narratively informative!. The Marx's Brother's film clip "MonKEY Business" was another pun on the word KEY, like Florida KEYS, and KEY to the Future references. The Hitchcock Movie Marathon film "Vertigo" was about a man who meets a blonde woman who looked exactly like his brunette lover he believed he'd accidentally killed month earlier (DEJA VU) leading us to the makeup disguise scene where they both realize they've met before! CLEVER WRITING!. The beauty of the film is all the wonderful and possible intricate plot twist, turns and mystery that only is resolved with the last scene when the PUZZLE pieces finally fall into place. PERFECT! Gilliam is a mad genius himself! Glad you understood 99% of it and enjoyed it! Sadly some people have difficulty deciphering the complexities of Gilliam's films.

Terry Gilliam is one of my favorite directors. He has so many great, quirky movies. You've got to try Brazil. And I would also recommend a documentary called Lost in La Mancha about his efforts to make a Don Quixote movie.

Brazil was the first movie in this genre, and it was also written and directed by Gilliam. It's routinely rated on various top 100, top 50, and top 20 films of all time lists. It's like 12 Monkeys, but more surreal and absurdist, and slightly dated from being made in the 80s, but it doesn't lose anything for it.

This is one of those movies you see new things every time you watch it

Terry Gilliam co-directed all of the Monty Python movies with Terry Jones. Also if you'd take a look at his IMDB page, just wow, the list of works this man has under his belt is incredible. We have this one ofc, Brazil, Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas, Time Bandits, Adventures of Baron Munchausen. And the list goes on. Edit: Die Hard 2 takes place at Christmas (like the first one). So I'd recommend it for this years holiday season. Just my opinion. I recommend Tears of the Sun. Its one of my favorite Bruce movie.

Responding here to comments of yours in no particular order -- One of the best Bruce Willis movies of all is Unbreakable, with a strong and unusual performance by Samuel L. Jackson. Great dystopian movies from long ago are Soylent Green, starring Charlton Heston with Edward G. Robinson in his very last role, and Silent Running, featuring some of the cutest (yet never overbearing) robots of all time. (And yes, absolutely try some Marx Brothers -- Animal Crackers and Duck Soup are particularly tasty). Absolute top virus movies are The Andromeda Strain and Children of Men, although The Satan Bug is a nice simple old-fashioned hoot of an adventure. Between a lion and a bear, I would bet on the lion. It's an odd movie, but I do have an appreciation for Terry Gilliam's work. He also did Time Bandits, Brazil, and The Fisher King, and co-directed Monty Python and the Holy Grail.

When I first saw this, me and my co-workers talked about it for days and days. _THAT_ is the hallmark of a good movie. So many questions, like, who is the guy that calls him "Bob"? How come that guy knows James in some timelines but not in others? Is James really imagining the whole thing (Like Quaid from Total Recall)? When we see the female scientist on the airplane at the end of the movie, sitting next to the crazy scientist, is that her BEFORE she becomes one of the scientists on the board in the future that sends Cole back in time, or has she been sent from the FUTURE to change something (after figuring out that James had failed in his mission)? One of my favorite things about this movie is that while Dr. Railly is slowly starting to realize that Cole is telling the truth,* he is simultaneously starting to believe that he is, in fact, mentally ill. But then she calls the number to leave the message to the future board, it's a dry cleaning business and she thinks that means Cole really is crazy and that the future is not doomed...then he repeats what the message was and she suddenly realizes that they are, in fact, doomed. * When she looks through her WWI photos and finds the one with Cole, it is such a shock to her (and us). So well done.

The film they're watching in the cinema is Vertigo.

The main music theme is from Argentinian musician and composer Astor Piazzolla... and the "accordion" is really a bandoneón which is an instrument mostly used in Tango music.

I like how the movie sets you up to disbelieve Cole, then everything he says is right or as accurate as the information he was given in the future is. Cole says he's 'supposed to find the source and then they'll send a scientist back to study the pure germ' so at the end we don't know if that was a past version of the scientist who was there coincidentally or if they were from the future and because of Cole the future is now saved. The ending leaves it up to you to decide if Cole is a Tragic Hero or Sisyphus struggling against the inevitable.

28 Days Later is a top-notch dystopia flick

I love how much attention you pay to the movie and you follow the confusing story very well. I think this is my favorite movie of all time. Not necessarily the best but definitely the most interesting in every way. Every detail is perfect and meticulously created.

Underrated, Under appreciated and mostly forgotten masterpiece. I saw in the theater and remember thinking this is one of the most important movies I've ever seen. Gilliam's Brazil is another excellent dystopiate.

You might have missed the importance that the scientist at the end said her job was "insurance." This implies that she will be stopping the virus from spreading. How? Who knows, perhaps killing the lab tech? But the important thing is that Bruce Willis's character did not fail, and his young self will live in a world not destroyed by a virus.

Saw this in the theater in Philly. Eveeyone cheered for the scene when Bruce sees the bear. Thats Philadelphia city hall. They stayed at the hotel I worked at. Bruce Willis was a pretty cool cat. He would play piano in the bar at night.

The film La Jetée is a half-hour short, and there are versions with either English sub-titles or English dubbing. Definitely adds to the experience. The film being watched in the movie theatre is Hitchcock’s “Vertigo,” which isn’t listed on the marquee. Brad Pitt was nominated for Best Supporting Oscar. He wore special contacts to help make his eyes look unusual. Another great Gilliam film is The Fisher King, starring the incomparable Robin Williams and has more of Gilliam’s unique production design.

Mr. Gilliam was the American member of the otherwise-British Monty Python comedy troupe. And he was the animator, as well as being a writer and performer in the ensemble. His unusual vision emerged in their TV series of the late 1960s and early 1970s, Monty Python's Flying Circus (I have a treasured box of DVDs). That vision transferred into the group's movies, of course: Holy Grail, Life of Brian, and The Meaning of Life. And then he began directing his own movies. My favourites of his include Time Bandits, Brazil (dystopia on steroids!), and The Fisher King (which are all worth reacting to), along with 12 Monkeys, and even the ludicrously quirky Adventures of Baron Munchausen. There are more, and maybe I'll enjoy the others enough to add to this list when I see them again. If you want more future dystopia movies, beyond the realm of Gilliam, consider Children of Men, V for Vendetta, District 9, Gattaca, Minority Report, both Blade Runner movies, Dune (the second one coming this fall), Clockwork Orange, and there are plenty more. You asked about the Marx Brothers, and I would be thrilled to see you react to Horse Feathers, A Night at the Opera, and Duck Soup. The Marx Brothers were geniuses, especially the way they used language. A writer behind the scenes once said "Wait a second, I think I just heard one of my original lines."

Depends on the bear color. In North America we have Black Bears and Grizzly Bears. If its black, get crazy and make a ton of noise and make yourself seem as big as you can. If it's brown, lay down and protect your head and neck. If it attacks fight back. Aim for the eyes and nose. Never run because they are faster (up to 35 mph) and never climb trees. Try to find sturdy shelter or drive away but don't take shelter in a car you can't drive away in because a Grizzly can and will rip a car door off it's hinges. Source: park ranger warnings in countless state and federal parks that are known to have bears.

This has a similar look to Terry's earliest effort, Brazil. And, it's similar in tone to French films Delicatessen and The City of Lost Children, both films by director Marc Caro. Terry Gillam was also involved with Delicatessen's production, so the similarities are very noticeable.

You are actually not the first who asked the question, "Who would win, bear or a lion". People actually tested it that in the past many times and the answer is basically always the bear.

Consider also watching the TV show. It starts similar to the movie, but does it's own thing and it's great.

Thanks for reacting to one of my favorite movies! My dad and I loved watching time travel movies and debating the differences in the time travel elements between them. This one was a favorite but we always debated something else with this one. We’re from Philadelphia where this movie was filmed so we’re very familiar with all of the locations. The Oasis hotel where they stop on their way from Baltimore to Philly was actually in NJ so nowhere near to being on their route. They would’ve had to drive through Philly and then over the bridge into Jersey to get to it. That always bothered my dad, he couldn’t let it go. I tried explaining to him that they were just using it as a set and most people don’t know where that hotel actually is. At some point in our debate I would usually say “you know Star Wars isn’t actually filmed in outer space, right? They use sets”, but it still always bothered him. Anyway, I still love watching this movie and it always reminds me of my dad.

another Terry Gilliam movie you might want to see is "Brazil" (1985), and another great Bruce Willis movie is "Unbreakable" (2000) from M Night Shyamalan.

One of the indicators that Cole isn't crazy are the scenes in 1990 and 1996 that James doesn't appear in. Notably when he goes back to the future, and the detective calls Dr Railly about the bullet being an antique. Also scenes with Dr Peters before the airport. -- The only unexplained exception is the old raspy voice that calls him 'Bob' and the old man in skid row. Namely why he hears the voice in the future and the airport restroom 1996, and why the old man tips James off about the tracking device, thoough doesn't know who James is when Railly questions him.

Of all his flicks that are a definite must watch, I mean coming straight from a Monty Python flick then onto this(!), no wonder you were asking if there would be any animation. Hey Jen, The confusion over James Cole seeing Jeffrey in that vision of the airport is just a skewed memory. -------- You know when you have a dream or a memory from a long time ago and it gets fuzzy and you can get things mixed up especially with a current event that reminds you of said memory or dream and you mentally mix the two...that's what happened.

crazy comedy with Bruce..."Death Becomes Her"

This is a good film, but not Gilliam's greatest movie - that's probably Brazil, which is a remarkable satire of 1984 - and to me, a more likely vision of the future than Orwell's tale. It's production difficulties and the battles the director had with the studio to get it released are almost as epic as the film itself - well worth watching.

Brazil is another great future dystopia film that Terry Gilliam made. Better than 12 Monkeys, I think, but not quite as popular. In fact, 12 Monkeys was his most commercially successful film. That La Jetee film is a pretty mind-blowing short film...maybe in your own time if you have a Criterion Collection account. The Marx Brothers are definitely worth watching; either Duck Soup or A Night at the Opera are good starting points. Monty Python levels of comic anarchy...or the other way around technically because of who came first. Duck Soup particularly is pure anarchy. Vertigo by Alfred Hitchcock - the movie in the theater - is probably his best film and I think that tying it into the La Jetee story was a very nice touch. You'll pick up on that if/when your get around to it.

Well, there's always Brazil (1985). Also, have you seen THX1138 (1971), Logan's Run (1976), or Rollerball (1975), yet? As for good Die Hard movies, Live Free or Die Hard (2007) is a guilty pleasure of mine. None of the other Die Hard sequels rise to the level of rewatchability for me.

Movie was inspired by the 1962 French short film La Jetee. A movie that was entirely still pictures with a voice over narration.
